And which PCIe slot is the card in ?

It is in slot 4 (mostly due to the cable reaching to that spot). I'm getting a longer cable on Tuesday so can move it wherever.

Thunderbolt 3 then you can plug into the USB header on your card to get usb2 support on the USB-C ports as well. I guess maybe you don't need Titan Ridge tb3 joevt does.

Got it!

For a test i would give the card External SATA power from outside the Mac Pro and see if it still ejects disks after going to sleep.

I don't have a way of doing this unfortunately. Let me see if I can come up with a solution.

Occasionally, depending on the drive in my external USB 3.0 dock I'll get a 'dis-connect but the drive will always re-connect within 30 seconds using my Inateck KTU3FR-4P.
I also ALWAYS have one or another HDDs in my USB 3.0 dock at startup .. maybe that helps.

Ah, I thought you weren't getting any disconnect notifications.

I tried the card in a different PCI slot and powered it from a different HDD slot and the result was the same. Disconnect message comes up, but drive then reconnects. A bus powered drive connects immediately and the Drobo takes up to 30 seconds.

Not ideal for the circumstances unfortunately. My Lightroom gallery is located on the Drobo and with it disconnecting, Lightroom freaks out a bit.

Would using a powered USB dock help with this?

It never has for me.

I don’t have a Drobo but if I were in your position... I would turn off all automated sleep functions when working. This should avert your issue. Then if you need to walk away for a longer period, just eject the drive manually, and put the system to sleep manually.

I am pretty sure that the Fresco Logic FL1100 chipset you have on that usb 3.0 card is PCIe 2.0 so you should be able to put it in any PCIe slot including slot 3 without worrying about being limited to PCIe 1.1 speeds. That'll free up slot 4 for a tb3 card. ;)

" Occasionally " is the key word here . . 10 year old spinner drives.

Newer SSD drives connected to my external USB 3.0 dock don't dis-connect

Are there any new drivers available for your Drobo ?

Just a thought ..

In System Prefs/ Energy saver .. have you got " Put hard disks to sleep when possible " turned ON or OFF ?

I have it turned OFF but I have no idea whether this applies to external drives.

My very old main backup spinner HD is always in my USB 3.0 external dock and it never ' disconnects' but of course being old & slow it takes a few seconds to pop up on the Desktop if I need to use it but all of my SSD's (USB 3.0 docked ) are always available, instantly.

Yes, I have those turned to "off" and the situation still happens.

One thought I had - I have the SATA power cable plugged into the #3 HDD spot. There is a switch on the motherboard that gets depressed when a hard drive is in there. Does that switch need to be depressed in order to use power from the port?

I successfully updated the BootROM from 140.0.0.0 to 144.0.0.0

Pleasant surprise: I was having an issue with a RAID0 OWC Elite Pro Quad enclosure attached via a Sonnet Allegro Pro USB-C PCIe card. The RAID enclosure would not mount when performing a simple restart. It only mounted if the MP was fully shut down and then booted).
Now the RAID drive mounts normally when I need to restart, such as after some software updates. I am thinking the BootROM update solved that one. I never had BR 141.0.0.0 so maybe that update fixed it first. No idea.

A surprising collateral effect is possible I suppose. Please keep testing this and checking in with updates if you don’t mind.

Bought this U3102A PCI-EX2 to USB3.1 Expansion Adapter Card ASM3142, mac pro boots only 1 or 2 times successfully with the adapter plugged in (and USB 3.0 works), after that my MacPro simply doesn't boot, either black screen and no chime sound, or hangs at the beginning of the boot progress screen. When I remove the card, it boots again, but if I install the card back, it will boot only 1 or 2 times.

I wonder if the new IO card in the new MP can be easily dropped into a 2010/2012 and Just Work, with USB 3/Thunderbolt . It looks like it's just a PCIe x4 card...

Even if it is, would you buy new mac pro for this card? :)

LOL, no, I'm hoping that it'll mean that either we can get ahold of the cards as repair parts to put into older MPs or that it'll mean an expansion in support for PCIe based TB3/USB4/USB3 cards that might make shoehorning in a third party card in easier :)

MacPro5,1? Did you connect SATA power to the card? Did you try any USB 3.1 gen 2 devices? The card is PCIe 3.0 x2 so it probably won't perform better than an ASM1142 based card while the card is in a classic Mac Pro even though it has a ASM3142. It will perform better in a PCIe 3.0 slot (if it doesn't cause boot failure).

literally from the site "One half-length x4 PCI Express gen 3 slot with Apple I/O card installed" https://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/ - that's also what they said in the keynote, and it looked a standard connector from the brief glimpse I saw...

Am I missing something?
WTF!!!??? You just blew my mind! I didn't know it was officially announced. It actually looks like they are delivering the computer I've been waiting for. Sorry for the rant but this is the most excited I've been in a long time. (But I do feel sorry for people that rely on CUDA).

The PCIe slot that the I/O card goes into is different than a normal PCIe slot. It probably means the I/O card will not fit in a normal PCIe slot. A riser can make it fit if necessary, but I don't know if it would work without the other signals (DisplayPort).

I didn't put any SATA power to the card, it was advertised as not required. Is there a change it would boot fine with this cable?

Nope, even with no devices..
Ok. I suppose moving it to different slots doesn't help either and you have the latest firmware in your MacPro5,1. So try the power cable. Then maybe look for an ASM3142 firmware updater. There maybe a conflict between it and another PCIe card in your system. Can you get "lspci -nnvvv" output for the card?

Well unfortunately, I discovered a side effect of the disconnect/connect behavior with my Drobo. I turned on my Mac the other day to discover that the Drobo wasn't mounting but was showing up in the Drobo dashboard. After research, this meant that the file system was corrupt, which is typically a result of the Drobo not dismounting correctly. After Disk Utility failed to recover it, I was forced to buy a piece of software called Disk Warrior, which fixed it quickly.

All this to say that what was an inconvenience is now a no-go. Now I'm stuck! I need a way to ensure that the Drobo won't disconnect when the Mac sleeps.
