And that may very well be the case - I'm not debating this. Again, the presence of Mac Pros on Craigslist, much less ones that are reasonably priced, are very limited in my area. Right now there are a bunch of 3,1s and earlier models, and most are asking more than what I'm paying OWC for the 4,1. But hey! They've got ALL this software on them, so that's got value, right? <sarcasm>

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on condition. I've got 14 days to decide once I get it and they'll cover the return shipping, so I really have nothing to lose. If it's a real beater, I'll return it and go with Mac of All Trades and take my tax beating.

That's the Mac Pro 3,1 I've been using for the last two years after FedEx (who packed it) savaged it in transit and paid off my insurance claim without question. I actually made money on this deal as a result, and was able to give the seller some money back.

This picture looks so familiar. I can swear that I got this same one at some point. Of course it went back to where it came from right away... I mean look at the bubble wraps. Like they were packaging a feather and not a 50 lbs Mac Pro. I got the same packaging and same condition. These people must be nuts...

This is where I got mine on 09/29/16. Less than 600...

It was a good deal back then...
Apple Mac Pro (Mid 2010) (2) Intel Quad-Core Xeon E5620 2.40 GHz

I lurked on Craigslist for quite a while, fairly content running a 4,1>5,1 hex, but always keeping an eye open for a reasonably priced 2010 or 2012 dual CPU that would be an easy CPU swap. A 2010 5,1 dual showed up at $800... I called the seller when he cut the price to $600 a few weeks later and picked it up for $500 cash. I guess I got little bit lucky, but my story has been replicated many times; so it seems it is really mostly a matter of patience and perseverance.

Just found this thread and bought a 4.1 Mac Pro from Macofalltrades. 299, extra $19 for 16gb of ram. Free shipping.

Just want a CPU upgrade to a 6 core. Anyone have a reliable seller? Aventis was recommended here.

Also just to quote myself my 4.1 Mac Pro from Macofalltrades came without barely a blemish for the normal rating. No issues with a hex core swap and the ram works as it should. Would recommend them. Good price in my opinion for a 2.66 quad with 16gb of ram for 318 shipped plus tax.
