Been using Splasm’s brightness control from the days of Snow Leopard. Still using it on Mojave.

I think I tried this years ago but didn't like it, because it uses a software "shade" over the screen, lowering contrast, instead of actually manipulating the hardware backlight of the monitor like MonitorControl does. (Except the M1 Mac Mini doesn't let you control the backlight over HDMI, so MonitorControl falls back to software brightness adjustment for my second monitor. Boo.)

Know of a great Mac app that we haven't highlighted yet? Let us know in the comments below
Thanks for the invitation!

I am the developer of the word processor Author and the PDF viewer Reader, both macOS only. It would be great if you could have a look.

The reviews on the App Store and great and there are further reviews and introductions on the website: www.augmentedtext.info The website also explains the advanced features of integrated concept mapping, instant citing and more. Happy to answer any questions of course and eager for any feedback, we are working on a major update for this summer of both applications.

Thanks a lot for this article, cleanshootX paid version was the program that I was looking for since at least 5 years!

No, there's a reason. "Cut and paste" with files is bad because it's not an atomic operation. The Mac way of "copy and move" instead is objectively better: there's no possibility of leaving the file system in a state where you deleted a file but didn't paste it. Just cmd-c, then opt-cmd-v. The only slight problem is that I find the opt-cmd-v combo is kind of awkward to perform, but I fixed that easily by using the keyboard shortcuts system preferences to make Finder/Move Item Here be shift-cmd-v instead.
Pretty sure the file transfer has to finish before the original file is deleted for that cut/paste operation under Windows. Otherwise it would be seriously dangerous. It's easy to test this with a big file: Run the cut paste command and then cancel it. File should still be at source.

I've installed AltTab but I was hoping it would let me switch between Safari Tabs as well as Apps and if it can I can't figure it out. Any ideas? :)

Thanks!

Probably best if those are in a separate switch set, otherwise you get hundreds of tabs with a few windows. ?

Control+Tab or Control+Shift+Tab to cycle through your tabs.

Interesting - I just tried this with Safari (with multiple windows open), and unfortunately I couldn't get it to work.
Hmm not sure what's going on.

Maybe check out

System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Keyboard > "Move focus to the next window"

and see what your setting is. Mine is Command + `

Has anyone here actually replaced Alfred with Raycast?
Yes, just yesterday. Vallum (app filter, similar to LittleSnitch) was firing up every few seconds, with Raycast trying to connect to AWS, Google, Cloudflare, Segment, Vercel and what not...
Now, after a few drastic rules set up to block it, it calmed down. But I had to (temporarily) override the blocked connections in order to install a few extensions...
Those were the days, when Quicksilver was shining (and crashing, and hogging the CPU during a music recording session, and... ? )

I haven't had Quicksilver crash in the entire time I have started using it (about three years ago) and for my configuration it is not a resource hog: 0.0% CPU and 128.5 MB of RAM.

Is it possible to see if Raycast ever sends any of the clipboard items to some external servers? It's my first time using a clipboard manager and am a little paranoid about security.

And the fact that Raycast developers are Russians adds even more fuel to my paranoia.

Windows uses Alt+Tab to cycle though both apps and child windows, whether you both or not.

macOS separates these and uses Cmd+tab for apps and Cmd+~ (tilde--the key above Tab) for child windows of the active app.

It's very much a personal preference thing, but you absolutely CAN cycle through child windows natively on macOS.
You have made my day....I have tried to work this out for files in excel.....thank you !!

Is this what Rogue Amoeba's LoopBack does? I need to redirect a browser window's audio to OBS Studio. I'm not sure that alone is worth the $100 LoopBack costs.
If you need a per-app redirect, then you can stop reading here.
Otherwise, I use Blackhole, which is a bit like the old Soundflower. There is a 2 channel and a 16 channel version.

For the crashes: I wonder if I am the unlucky one or you are the lucky one :)
For the resources: normally QS was fine (and for the memory I only vaguely remember some problems from when I had a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio). But every 15 minutes or so it was taking over the CPU for a couple of seconds, and if that would happen while recording (almost unavoidable when recording long speeches), it would have meant dropped samples, easy to hear and quite annoying.
Having to chose between quitting QS while recording (with the risk of forgetting  ) or trying something else, I went for Alfred.
To tell it all, by now I have a well installed habit of quitting as many apps as possible before recording (plus a "sudo purge" via terminal), including Raycast, so maybe I could go back to QS again :D

Wow, thanks very much for this. Works like a charm!

Snippet for anyone on the World Wide Web searching Google like a madman like me for an alternative to Soundflower and LoopBack to route audio from Chrome to OBS studio to record remote guests, and that works on M1 Apple silicon you have found your answer in Blackhole. Thanks @Yassan!

You are very welcome, @ipedro

Here is my favourite use case for Blackhole:

I'm half deaf from the left ear, especially on the higher frequencies. I have a hearing device, but it doesn't work good with open headphones, it is useless with closed headphones, and it is not wearable together with earbuds. So, when I want to enjoy my headphones, I direct the system sound output to Blackhole (2 channels version), then I use Blackhole as input for my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation; I use Presonus Studio One because I got it for free with a Presonus audio interface, but GarageBand works too; it just must have its independent audio signal routing), and apply the needed EQ, compression and limiting on the left channel.

If someone wants more details for this use case feel free to ask.

Has anyone tried Wavebox? It's a Chromium browser that lets you pin all your apps into a sidebar and keeps your tabs sorted and grouped by where they came from. It also lets you use cookie containers (kind of like profiles, but in the same window) to keep things completely separate, i.e. you could sign into multiple WhatsApp accounts, or keep your work Gmail separated from your home one ?

Well, I don't remember when I switched to Alfred, but at that time Quicksilver didn't see a new release since years. And lately, after having swapped Alfred for Raycast, I was fed up with all Raycast's attempts to connect to some AWS or similar.
So I thought: well, for realtime-critical usages I anyway quit all the apps that I can, including Raycast. So, why not go back to the good old QS? Then I visit its homepage and - what a beautiful surprise! Quicksilver is actively developed again! 😀🍾
It looks even better than I remember and for the moment I have no problem with crashes or cpu hogging. And it doesn't want to connect to many different internet servers.
Thank you @Maximara for reviving an old flame. :)
