Using Band-Aids, yes or no?

cool, got two good stories for you.

yesterday nipped my finger and cut a good portion of my finger nail off, well it bled so, i broke out the first aid kit and got a disinfectant wipe, cleaned the area, removed the jagged piece of finger nail, and put a finger bandage on it, to let it soak up the blood, and so i wouldn't get blood all over the place. took the bandage off last night.

a few weeks ago i got a good gash with a mountain bike fall. i ended up just cleaning the area with a little iodine and water, and used some crazy glue to seal it. back on the bike in 10 minutes and just kept on going. i'm a big fan of using crazy glue if needed, however, cleaning the wound first should also be done to prevent infection.
 
I never used to use band-aids. If I got a small cut (that didn't bleed too bad or was in a place where I constantly would touch) I would just rinse with water and forget.

Last fall this cost me two days in the hospital: One of the cats (probably my Mother's old cat that I've had to take care of for the last year) licked a small, you might even say insignificant, wound on my right arm. One week later my arm was doubled in size and I the fever went above 40°C (104°F). I went to the doctor and was sent directly to the emergency room at the hospital and given intravenous penicillin. After two days I was sent home with a powerful penicillin cure.

Ironically, I also went home with a new and healthy stock of penicillin resistent Staphylococcus aureus, which had flourished while my immune system was "busy". This forced me into an antibiotic cure just days after finishing the penicillin for my original pasteurella infection... :rolleyes:

That was a terrifying wake-up call, to say the least. I generally don't care much for doctors, specially needles and blood tests, and it was 30 years since my last hospital stay.

Now I have gotten better at using band-aids... and telling the cats to frell off when I have an open wound... ;)

Just grab a kleenex or toilet paper, some hydrogen peroxide (or alternate), and wrap it up in duct tape.

Most of the time when I get cut I'm backpacking or canoeing. When I get cut, I grab a tissue (or some gauze if I brought it) pop it on the cut and wrap it all up in duct tape.

Two years ago I was doing a 50 mile canoe paddle, and on the first night we had to hoist our canoes up a 15 foot rock face...that we had to climb up first. On my way up I slipped on a slimy part and plunged into the water, shredding a hunk of flesh out of the bottom of my heel about 1 cm x 1cm and a little less than a cm deep. I poured some hydrogen peroxide on it, let it dry off by the camp fire, threw a square of gauze on top and wrapped my entire ankle and foot in duct tape. Didn't come off until we finished the paddle. :D

I used regular old packaging tape, but my sweat kept moistening the tape and it wouldn't stay. But this duct tape you speak of...

*pauses to ponder for a bit*

That is a mighty fine idea...I will have to try it. I got a freshy that I know will be bugging me tomorrow. (Or is it now today?)

I once jumped over a fence to save my cat from two dogs. I just grabbed the cat to throw him over the fence into our yard, and he bit and scratched me in the fury of it all. It was all on one hand, and I ended up with a very swollen wrist and arm. I didn't get the fever, however, or maybe it was a mild one, I don't recall. It was quite painful. I guess that's what they call Cat Scratch Fever!

I have no problem with band-aids but I don't really use them. However, I think the world is evenly split on this issue. Not that I have scientific evidence, just a speculation based on my experience.

I spend an hour everyday (w/ my labrador) in this little woodsy series of paths across the street and always have little cuts and scrapes from trapsing about in the woods (I'm much more adroit in the concrete jungles). And my downstairs neighbors (Jessica & Annette - not roommates) have this inexplicable desire to care for my minor injuries. Jessica applies Hydrogen Peroxide followed by some generic Neosporin cream. Annette uses alcohol soaked into some kind of cotton pad thing, followed by band-aids.
 
i basically never use Band-Aids. If the cut isn't that bad, i dont do anything. If its pretty bad and bleeding everywhere i tape it. (like my most recent lacrosse accident where my pinky got hit, a blood blister formed w/o my realizing it, i took my glove off and it ripped it open. enough detail or do u want the different colors of the dual layer scab?)

I am stunned that I just saw this thread....

I used to use Band-Aids for a day or two after washing and applying antibiotic... seemed to work really well.

Now I've decided that I don't like getting cut, so I simply wear bandages all the time as a protective shield. Works wonders, but my kids have a hard time distinguishing between saying Mommy and Mummy. As a result, I always claim they're calling for her - an added bonus.

I use band-aids for everything...even if it's not a cut :eek: .

If I feel pain, I grab a band-aid. You know, one of the cool ones, like 'Barbie' or 'Hot Wheels.'

Tatooes are so yesterday. Band-Aids are the future.
