It took me about 10 tries to get it, dang those steam servers are getting hammered.
I already have it on my PC but i'm just installing it on my mbp for those uber sweet earbuds. :D

Btw Did you or anyone else get the earbuds yet?

I did get earbuds after going into a game. Misc item.

you can copy the data files over from your PC installation!

anyway. it's going to be carnage this weekend. the noob-pocalypse is nigh. make sure you do the training mode first!

the mighty rbarris of the macrumors forums and VALVe employee has said performance is noticeably better

I don't recall making any such claim about unreleased software updates, nor do I believe that the next update to ship after 10.6.3 will make a lot of difference. That said we're working hard with Apple, ATI and NVIDIA on cranking up the frame rate, and a lot of interesting discoveries have been made just in the last couple of weeks, so my guess is that things will improve in the future.

A couple of generic perf tips:

a) MSAA on ATI has some issues right now - if you have ATI graphics, I would recommend disabling MSAA until this has been resolved. It is something they are acutely aware of and they are working on it.

b) relaunch after adjusting your settings. Some users seem to get better results that way.

c) make sure you closed up all the Steam windows (like the animated storefront) and other apps. I got a perf report once from a guy who had his Chrome browser running and there were 7 threads worth of animated Flash ads taking down his CPU's.

d) some users find the color correction option doesn't do anything noticeable for them and that it saps performance.

e) full screen is going to be a little faster than windowed.

f) disable Spotlight and Time Machine as an experiment.

People may be referring to this:

So just to make a general point, we'll hit a certain performance level on each class of system at release, and then (as has been the case a number of times in past projects I worked on) we will crank it up higher, sometimes as we make discoveries on our own code, in some cases when we get requested improvements to ship in software updates. There's one of those requests queued up right now and it's a doozy in terms of getting us more FPS. That's the future.

So I take it that requested improvement isn't in 10.6.4?

You would think they'd increase the resources every time there's a mac release day.

We hit 200GBbps.

:p

Yea they got hammered when tf2 had a free weekend try out a while back, then again when portal was free. Like it or not, they are sending out gigs to each person so its a massive burden on their servers. You can't massively over invest for the occasional jump in traffic.

and yes, read the tf2 wiki, don't be the n00b dragging down the team being a moron. they've kept that game up to date with loads of content patches, its pretty fun stuff:)

to be honest tf2 had issues from the start, its load times and multithreading/multitask behavior were a bit dodgy even on windows:p

It took seven hours to download and install TF2 on my mbp (new base 15") after getting the Orange Box... yeesh. On another note, of the games in said orange box, what should I play first?

depends what you want:p hl is good single player, tf2 is multi. portal is single player. but yes, even pc users are getting a free tf2 weekend this time so the server burden must be immense.

How do I download the free version for this weekend's free trial? All I'm seeing is the 50% off $9.99 price to buy it, but admittedly I'm a complete newb on Steam so I may just be missing it.

Hey guys, it has been a long time since I've run any games on a computer and so I am a bit behind on all the tech.

I have a MBP 13" 2.53Ghz Core 2, 4GB DDR3, Nvidia Geoforce 9400m graphics w/ 256 Vram... Can I run TF2 ok? Can I run most new games on this or should I not bother with some? Better to boot into windows?

Sorry for all the questions, just don't want to buy the game and then realize I don't have enough machine.

Really??? You will pay thousands for a Mac Pro (according to your sig) but you feel entitled to get what many consider the best multiplayer game out for free? Its only $20. Also unlike most games they keep adding more content for free.

Unless the game is new like red dead redemption and didn't come out 10 years ago for the pc.
Red Dead Redemption is the game I want to come out for the PC now that's a game worth buying.
I didn't buy this Mac Pro it was a birthday gift.

Mouse acceleration on the Macs is very annoying. Kept interfering with my sniping shots. I tried SteerMouse, MouseAccerlation, they all suck.

I feel like I'm forced to buy a MS mouse just to get the best mousing experience on the Mac for games.
