Bought an open box MB M1 Air 16gb, 1 tb preinstalled with Ventura. Should I keep Ventura or downgrade to Monterey?
Which do people prefer so far. Looking for the most stable OS.

Ventura has been fine for me, on my M1 Air. Battery life seems to be the same as Monterey was.

the reported poor battery life by some users has been my major reason not to upgrade yet.
also that somewhat silly (sorry) Stage Manager is not really a feature i'm looking forward to have waste system resources.
i hope it won't use too much RAM when disabled (which will be the case in my case)

anyone know how much RAM it's using on average on a 8GB machine when disabled?

The current release 13.1 is very stable on a M1 Mac. I used it for many hours during its beta cycle. Because of the improvements with stability/speeding up some the MacOS processes I wouldn't touch Monterey now if you paid me. ;)

Used 24" M1 iMac w/16GB/1TB and 16" M1 MAX MBP for testing.

I would be interested in disabling stage Manager too. I have no use for it and I suspect that it is the reason battery life sucks on my old 13 Pro Max. It was a 3 day or more phone before the iOS 16 update and after a few days or weeks with it I noticed significant downgrade to the battery life.

So I am wondering if it would do the same on a laptop? Don't need or use it so if I can disable it that might make a difference not that I noticed any battery degradation on my M2 MBA but it would be very interesting to test battery life with it on and disabled.

I would probably downgrade to Monterrey if you can but in terms of stability and performance Ventura seems fine.

My big question would be can you downgrade since it came with Ventura?

I *love* Ventura. (I skipped Monterey completely.) Stage Manager? What's that? Never saw, never noticed. Continuity Camera, on the other hand? Pure magic.

Apple Music remains a hot mess, but that's hardly a surprise. I mostly use it to stream from iPhone to Sonos (with SonoAir running, because apparently Sonos isn't compatible with AirPlay). Apple's new tick (stable system) vs tock (oops, we tried) hits again. Catalina? Hardly usable. Big Sur? Great. Monterey? Don't get me started. Ventura? Brilliant.

I'm still on OS 11 Big Sur. I don't like upgrading and being forced to learn new stuff.

I'd downgrade to what you are familiar with.
MacOS 11.0 was what the M1 MBP/MBA Mac mini used initially, but it had a bunch of issues like kernel panics/memory leaks, disk utility quitting, various recovery methods for the new AS platform. Safari was a lot slower, less capable in those days. Most recent version is 11.7.2.

I fyi don't want stage manager, just don't use it. I like my desktops, I have assigned all my applications to one as I prefer, So I am not seeing why I would want stage manager. BTW, no ram, battery or any other issues for me. Ventura has been super stable. I am betting the people complaining about battery issues as you say, I have never heard of any issues, are probably doing some other stuff that is killing the battery

Yea, you would do a clean install. Wipe and format the hd and create a bootable usb Monterey installer.

Your iPhone doesn’t have stage manager.

Are you having any issues with Ventura? If so, see if Monterey has the same issues. If it doesn’t, downgrade. If it doesn’t or you can’t have any significant issues. Stick with Ventura.

That isn't a good thing. It's getting like Microsoft. Let's change something just for the sake of change.

The System settings with graphical icons helped me quickly and easily find a setting I was look for.

It is not like iOS is organized.
Ever tried the view menu with system settings? While there is some debate about previous graphical icon groupings initially being represented instead of todays scrollable list for systems settings you still end up with nestled settings for some settings. The vertical listing I think was chosen because it works well on devices with smaller res screens similar to the implementation on iOS/iPadOS/tvOS. You can find anything using spotlight also, no need to hunt. Likely we will continue to see the OS’s change for each device families compared to how it was in the past. Just wait until you see the next major releases. :D

Well I have ADHD and my brain likes graphical representation. I can be deal with vertical listings and text but it just seems counter intuitive.

Also maybe it is just me but I don't want my Mac to look and work like an iPhone.

But I get your points and you are right.

If I was you I would stick to Ventura. It runs stable even on my ancient and very underpowered Mac mini 2014 with 1,4GHz i5 and 4GB RAM via OCLP. Stage Manager may stay switched off.
Only the new System Settings are something to get used to but that’s a minor issue.

Unless you have a very particular reason, I’d never downgrade. That’s a dead end street. Dive in and enjoy Ventura!
Still on Monterey myself, because I have audio plugins that are not yet supported or tested to satisfaction in Ventura.
