That isn't a good thing. It's getting like Microsoft. Let's change something just for the sake of change.

The System settings with graphical icons helped me quickly and easily find a setting I was look for.

It is not like iOS is organized.

It's change for the sake of consistency, if Apple has data that shows that most new Mac buyers are coming from Windows and already have iPhones and/or iPads, it makes sense. Use the search if you can't find something.

To the OP, stay with Ventura. It's the most secure of the two, and will include fixes for stuff that wasn't fixed in Monterey and will continue to receive fixes throughout the year.

Both OS are fine but I’ve found Ventura to be stable and trouble free so I’d stick to it unless you have some software comparability issues.

Features like stage manager and the new preferences are likely here to stay (although stage manager can be disabled), so probably worth just getting used to them unless you plan to go years without updating. Also while I agree the preferences can be hard to locate moved settings at this time, the search in my experience works well so maybe just try using that to find settings.

I haven’t noticed any particular battery concerns. Won’t say there hasn’t been any, but it’d be worth verifying whether those concerns originate from beta builds or the RC, or are they the current version. Also do the people making the claim have any actual before measurements (working in IT, often these sorts of things are unintentionally misrepresented with either inaccurate current stats or prior state recollections that actually don’t reflect reality). Again, some people likely have had legitimate battery issues but just check what’s being claimed and whether it can be supported if that will skew your decision.

there
I really liked Monterey, I ran that in both 2012 MacBook Pro and Mini with I7 processors.
Then I un-needed-ly purchased a new MacBook Air m1 with Monterey, thinking and fearing
that I would not like Ventura for the changes that the media complained about,
mostly for the OS being like an iPad, were they wrong and
Ventura is fast and the new features like the side panels or boxes make the system work better.

I dont miss Monterey OS and went back to Mojave on the MacBook Pro to run CS4 and that screen saver is great!

hope this helped!

Apple only patches some security vulnerabilities in old versions of macOS, not all of them. If your main concern is stability, I'd argue security patches are a big part of that since a compromised system is also going to be less stable. 🙃

I upgraded from Monterey to Ventura on my M1 Max MacBook Pro 16" the day it came out. Overall I'm very happy with it. The most recent 13.1 release (not the original 13) does seem to have broken Barrier, which is mouse/keyboard sharing software I was using, but it was so unreliable already that I've learned to do without it most of the time anyway. I do hate the new System Settings app, but as TracerAnalog and Smigit have pointed out, there is no future in old releases and you'll have to get used to the changes eventually. That might as well happen now. So my vote is for Ventura.

Bought an open box MB M1 Air 16gb, 1 tb preinstalled with Ventura. Should I keep Ventura or downgrade to Monterey?
Which do people prefer so far. Looking for the most stable OS.
Ventura for new features and Metal 3

the reported poor battery life by some users has been my major reason not to upgrade yet.
also that somewhat silly (sorry) Stage Manager is not really a feature i'm looking forward to have waste system resources.
i hope it won't use too much RAM when disabled (which will be the case in my case)

anyone know how much RAM it's using on average on a 8GB machine when disabled?
Same question, does stage manager consume anything if disabled I wonder

It's not really fair to compare an i7 with M1

If you’re fully into the Apple ecosystem, especially if you buy at least one new device every year, conclusion I’ve reached is that you‘re best off being on latest OS on all devices to get the full benefits. Ok, admit that I wait for the .1 releases before taking the plunge!

Only exception that comes to mind is if you have critical software that is not compatible (or indeed hardware).

I *love* Ventura. (I skipped Monterey completely.) Stage Manager? What's that? Never saw, never noticed. Continuity Camera, on the other hand? Pure magic.

Apple Music remains a hot mess, but that's hardly a surprise. I mostly use it to stream from iPhone to Sonos (with SonoAir running, because apparently Sonos isn't compatible with AirPlay). Apple's new tick (stable system) vs tock (oops, we tried) hits again. Catalina? Hardly usable. Big Sur? Great. Monterey? Don't get me started. Ventura? Brilliant.

(Sent from M1 Macbook Air)
Catalina was *******. Big Sur is good and stable right now. Never really had issues with Monterey except for one kernel panic, but I’m pretty certain it was caused by a corrupt external HDD. Time will tell with Ventura but so far so good.

I like Ventura but I don’t really take advantage of anything it offers new. I should mess around with Stage Manger. I think it can be useful for me.

I miss the old System Preferences though.

Apple engineers should hang their heads in shame for what they did to iTunes. I know they hate people like me who have music files resident on a HD, rather than listening to a streaming service, but do they need to make it more difficult & less enjoyable to use with each successive release?

I used to have iTunes Match, but my library was big but not huge, but it got more and more tedious to sort out my library constantly that eventually I gave in and just went with Apple Music, then eventually Apple One as I share it with my partner.

Apple are pushing more and more for people to not have a library either on their HD or in the cloud and opt for their streaming service instead, it’s just the way things are moving.

I can imagine iTunes Match and the ability import songs into iTunes will eventually get scrapped in favour of Apple Music unfortunately.

I would be interested in disabling stage Manager too. I have no use for it and I suspect that it is the reason battery life sucks on my old 13 Pro Max. It was a 3 day or more phone before the iOS 16 update and after a few days or weeks with it I noticed significant downgrade to the battery life.

So I am wondering if it would do the same on a laptop? Don't need or use it so if I can disable it that might make a difference not that I noticed any battery degradation on my M2 MBA but it would be very interesting to test battery life with it on and disabled.

I would probably downgrade to Monterrey if you can but in terms of stability and performance Ventura seems fine.

My big question would be can you downgrade since it came with Ventura?
Only the Mac and iPad have stage manager with the new updates.

Since the M2 MacBook Air originally came with Monterey, you are able to downgrade to Monterey if desired. An erase would be required.

Well I have ADHD and my brain likes graphical representation. I can be deal with vertical listings and text but it just seems counter intuitive.

Also maybe it is just me but I don't want my Mac to look and work like an iPhone.

But I get your points and you are right.
I also have ADHD and I found the new System Settings (using the View menu as recommended by @Realityck ) much easier to use than the old System Preferences. Mac user Since 2007. Started with OSX Tiger.

Ventura is first operating system made for M1-2 machines only! So this mean nothing short of SSD is need to boot well! This is my feeling on its realease1 Where before they tried to shoehorn the OS X old hats on old Macs! I know this because some old Mac Developers Steve had to do mock funeral for classic software makers at Developer conference1 He telling his Developers are now seeing the writing on wall and update their software or DIE! It's starting to feel it's to point back in day right now with m1-2 and developers not updating their software!

I'm stuck on Monterey per my company's dumb upgrade restrictions and am annoyed about it. I really want iMessage editing and a weather app more than anything else.
