I think at the end of the day it's what appeals to you. AT&T, allegedly from the blogs I've read, has faster LTE and 3G/4G. Verizon has the better plans and pricing. I have an AT&T preorder currently but am strongly considering changing to Verizon. 14.99 for 250MB? I mean seriously, AT&T lets be a little more realistic.

Also if you internationally, I don't think you'll have LTE. Should be a moot point. Meh, I still have no idea what I should do.

How does verizon have better plans when you get less data for the same price on the $30 plan?

I'd say AT&T has better pricing...$30 for 3GB vs $30 for 2GB. If Verizon matched this and still offered tethering, I'd switch from my AT&T order.

14.99 for 250mb or $20.00 for 1GB plus free tethering?

I'm in Portland, OR.

I wanted to test network speeds, so I drove down to Costco yesterday and fired up speedtest on ATT, Vz, Tmobile phones. It was a no brainer, but of course it all depends on coverage in your area.

Ordered a 16GB Verizon last night and counting the days 'til Mar 16th. :)

I just cancelled my ATT 64GB and got a Verizon instead. I like the 1 GB plan much better than the 250mb and would like the option of using my MBA if I would like! :)

Here is my question for everyone here.

My Dad has an original AT&T iPad and has said he doesn't really use the 3G and wouldn't mind giving it (the sim) to me.

Can anyone walk me through the process of how I'd transfer the unlimited plan from his iPad to my new iPad?

Will the plan work for 4G Data as well? And will I be able to change the credit information without the plan 'lapsing'.

Finally, will I still be able to turn it on and off when I need it - or do I constantly have to pay each month? That's the only part that confuses me with people talking about not letting the Unlimited plan 'lapse'.

Just switched my order to verizon. I realized I'm sick of falling back to edge while on the road with AT&T. I am fed up with their crappy network. Edge only on i80 all the way through PA. Plus the 1gb plan is all I need for $20 its a good deal compared to ATT. Only problem is I am moving to london so I hope they will still exchange it if there is a problem.

ATT has two bands because they don't have enough specturm. that was the reason they wanted tmobile. right now verizon has more specturm than att and they have the ability to add more towers. Verizon is also converting their old 3g into lte towers quicker because they know they need lte speed where as att just got done updating to hspa +

verizon will be out of spectrum by 2013 thats why they are trying to buy more and att and tmobile are trying to block them

verizon still has more than att at the moment. the issues verizon has will only be worse on networks with less spectrum (verizon does have more users though). Verizon will just have to convert their old 3g network into lte and gradually get rid of the old network. Att is doing the same right now. they are converting their edge network over.

I chose AT&T because I want to use a surveillance camera that will send photo's directly to your email. You have to use ATT or T Mobile. I hope I can do this with the IPad. Otherwise I surely would go with Verizon, although they didn't have the 1GB for $20 offered yesterday. Hmmmm hope I am doing the right thing! I can always return I guess within 14 days. I see the MacRumors poll:

View Poll Results: Which carrier did you pick for your new iPad
AT&T 107 64.46%
VERIZON 59 35.54%
Voters: 166.

Who chose ATT and why?

Probably because there are still a ton of AT&T customers that were original Apple users before the iOS devices ever came to Verizon. Verizon has a ton of Android users on their 4G LTE network. These AT&T Apple folks probably also have AT&T iPhones and like having one bill.

Personally I ditched all my iOS devices and went to Sprint and Verizon because AT&T was horrible to deal with and raised prices at every turn. Now that Verizon's data plan for iPad matches the "included" tethering my Motorola Xoom has I've ordered a Verizon iPad.

The Xoom will probably be retired but I'll spend a few months seeing if I can tolerate the locked down Apple ecosystem after being "free" on my Android Xoom.

Regardless I'm excited and hope others figure out Verizon 4G coverage and included hotspot make them the carrier of choice for always on tablets.

Cheers,

I'm in Philadelphia, so...

verizon seems to be the only choice.
Too bad Philly is not a AT&T "4G-LTE City".
But anyway, at least I get free tethering, right?

I'm the fence on this choice. I have data plans for both AT&T (Unlimited iPhone) and Verizon (4G LTE mifi). I have no issues with AT&T 3G in my area... so I wouldn't mind giving AT&T 4G a chance.

My Verizon 4G LTE is very spotty in my area... it's fast when it connects to 4G. What sucks is when it switches from 4G to 3G and the other way around. The lag time is really long when it switches. However, I love the service of Verizon. I have a 5gb plan with Verizon, and I noticed just recently on my vzw account that I went over 1.644 gb last month... but Verizon didn't count it in overage cost. I didn't have to call or anything. They just charged me my normal 5gb monthly bill.

But... I still don't like the spotty coverage, and the lag when it switches. It's very annoying. I think I might want to give AT&T 4G a try in my area... However, I'm not sure if AT&T is as forgiving as Verizon when it comes data overage.

verizon $20 plan is only for existing customers.

I've seen this allegation on other forums from alleged "Verizon Reps." I just went to my local Verizon store today and the store manager confirmed that the 1GB/$20 plan is tablet exclusive and available for the new iPad - he read this directly from an internal memo. I am not a Verizon customer and I can sign up for it right now. I'll be getting the 1GB/$20 plan to start and see where the AT&T/Verizon price jockeying goes from there.

What do I do if I want to switch? Do I have to cancel and reorder? Doesn't that bump me back like someone who's just ordering now?

Is that legit?

its legit. people keep forgeting lte is the SAME technology on both networks. the past difference in att being faster was due to a difference in technology. if all things are the same (number of towers around you, number of people using, the speeds will be the same).

att only seems faster at the moment due to them not having many users, has nothing to do with the type of lte they are running (could be the number of towers too).

also keep in mind, verizon plans to have their entire 3g network converted over to lte by next year. they know they don't have a fast fallback solution so they are getting rid of their 3g as fast as they can.

For all you Verizon Haters. Does this look slow?

That is blazing. Verizon is covering their entire network with LTE in the next two years. AT&T will still have Edge only areas for at least the next five. No comparison IMO. LTE on AT&T will be limited to big cities for a while and buy the time its any good we will have the 5th or 6th iPad and we be throwing the "new" iPad in the trash. The 250 mb data plan is a joke.

Wait to see if there is a real difference.

Technically, I think it should be US LTE vs. World LTE w.r.t. which bands things are in.

In the US, both VZ and ATT are in the 700 MHz band while in Europe LTE is being deployed at 800 MHz.

B

So you've covered the US and Europe, what about the rest of the world?

Im thinking of switching my order from the at&t to the verizon version but i have a couple of things i need to be sure about first. With the verizon version, will i be able to stick a european 3G sim card when i travel overseas? If i sign up for 1gb but occasionally go over by 1 or 2gb what would be the penalty? How does verizon 4g lte compare to at&t in NYC?

i agree. ask yourself how long you plan on keeping this current ipad and then decide based on that.

if you upgrade yearly, makes sense to go with what network gives you lte right now. I wouldn't even consider whats going to come down the line as you are not locked into any contract and you get pick again next year. also, if you have both att and verizon lte right now in your cities, expanded lte coverage isnt important, then it makes all the sense in the world to get att. by the time att will slow down with more users, you will be looking to upgrade and get to pick networks again.

you can get euro 3g with either device, so you wont have a problem there.

if you go over, nothing happens. you just have to buy more data. ipad data is always prepaid as there is no contract.

currently, tests show ny has faster lte with att as its a new network with limited users. how long are you planning on keeping this ipad and also, is lte in other usa cities important?

Lte in other cities is not important to me. I dont travel frequently and when i do i occassionally, 3g will suffice. Since both devices will work overseas it all comes down to coverage in the NYC area and price for data usage.
