When I was on one of their UDP's I checked my data use for a 25-month period. 2 times my wife and I used over 2GB of data so I went ahead and got on a 2GB plan to save money. They then gave me another 1 GB under some promo (it was just there one day, didn't even call or anything). Now, they've given us yet another 1 GB "bonus data" for a total of 4GB. We use more than 2 now, but not a ton (I work from home and we're both on wifi most of the time).

In defense of Verizon, they *did* just GIVE us 2 GB of data for free recently without me having to do anything... and for as big as they are, I've gotten pretty decent customer service from them. Sometimes on the phone it's not great and chat is never really good... but in-store and eeevery now and then on the phone I'll get stellar service.

Plus, what did you honestly think? They were going to just keep giving unlimited data forever? Once they changed the plans and let people "grandfather" in, I knew those days were numbered. Quite honestly, they can do pretty much whatever they want.... as soon as that unlimited data plan contract was up, they could have made people switch off of a UDP if they wanted....

Verizon honored these plans and haven't raised the prices since they stopped offering them in 2011. That doesn't sound greedy.

These 1% users who are consuming gargantuan swaths of data every month (and absolutely bask in the glory of bragging about it) pitching epic tantrums bc they're getting charged rates more comparable to the current market seem to come across as the greedy ones.

we have 2 UDP lines. I got mine last year from the glitch and my wife has a 6s we just got that is still eligible for an upgrade. Im thinking if this is for sure happening that Ill do the best buy trick with apples website and get a second 6s which i can always sell. Even though I think this is fair of verizon to do because 50 a month for unlimited data on the best wireless network is reasonable considering thats how much your home internet charges for WIRED, SLOWER speeds I think if people really make an objection to this they might back off.

Remember when we all thought we were going to be throttled? It didn't end up happening. Lets give it some time....

You're making a HUGE assumption about the usage of users in the 1%. My wife and I are in the 1% and we don't use a huge volume of data. However, the Share Everything (whatever) plans are more expensive for us as we only have two lines. Plus I take issue with paying more and given an arbitrary limit that I'm immediately penalized for going over when I can pay less for unlimited data.

The only reason to implement this change is to force users onto metered plans that have overage penalties. I would even argue that Verizon's true preference would be to scare people onto WIFI as much as possible using the threat of overages so users are paying for services that they don't fully utilize.

I'm making no such assumptions about all users. If you aren't included in the group I mentioned, great. I simply brought up the fact that on this forum as well as other venues, I see many of those on UDP's brag over and over and over again about how much data they use.

I'm looking at Sprint and T-Mobile now.

Verizon as done my wrong for the last time.
Sprint still has the "Cut Your Bill in Half" promotion going on. That would preserve your UDP at a lower rate than what Sprint is offering. The downside with Sprint is that tethering is $20 for 2GB or $50 for 6GB on top of the UDP charge, vs. Verizon's $29 flat charge.

Interesting.

It's still worth it but it's getting to the point where they are just charging what they want because they can. Unlimited data should be a right and have a set cost. Wireless data isn't going away and the .gov needs to step in and stop people from paying so much for a limited plan and force them to offer an unlimited plan for a reasonable cost.

Everyone should be able to run there home connection from a LTE hotspot instead of paying 80 for DSL or whatever they use. It's stopping technology from evolving and just loading the coffers of executives that actually don't do anything (I know one of them)!

Interesting.
Yes. My VZW account is secondary (AT&T is my primary carrier). I was tempted to use this promotion, but then when I looked into tethering decided not to. Right now I use the VZW SIM in an iPad when I want hotspot and thus don't pay the $29 tethering fee. Sprint is more aggressive at cancelling accounts if they detect tethering.

However, if you don't tether and Sprint works in your area, it might be viable. It requires turning in an active Verizon phone (so pick up a cheap used 5C or Android if you don't want to give up a newer model) and buying a phone from Sprint.

I'm on a Verizon 5S now. Will that work?

Your huge assumption is your usage case is common. If the numbers don't work then that isn't Verizon's fault. But they do work for people who actually use UDP for serious data amounts. Those puffing about going elsewhere for $240 per year, good luck with that if you are in a too common roaming area. However if the coverage works then just go,no puffing required most here nor Verizon cares.

The other downside is that, well...it's Sprint.

I hope they lube up the $20 so it slides in easily.. they could make me feel better about this if they included tethering without having to root/jb

no because wireless and home internet are different technologies with different overheads.

Not sure how it's BS...You have no contract with Verizon. If you signed a 2 year contract with Verizon for $30 a month for unlimited, and they didn't raise the price for those 2 years they fulfilled their obligation. $50 a month seems very reasonable....personally I think they have every right to drop you as a customer if they wanted after the contract ends, I am surprised they and AT&T haven't done that for the clingers.

You are Verizon's and att's dream customer.
Charge more and keep ripping you off and you make excuses and agree with them.
Seems very reasonable huh?
Wow....

Says the guy who mistakenly gave up his unlimited plan Hahahahaha
Glad you cracked yourself up, so you could get some laughs.

Fact is, I've never had a UDP--never needed it. There's reliable wifi most places I frequent, and I have no need to constantly stream movies or listen to music on YouTube every minute of my life. I'm currently on a Share Everything plan with 3GB of data and unlimited talk/text on 2 lines for $99 out the door. That works for me.

Guys here is a fix. A buddy of mine who works at Verizon looked at my account to see if there were any promotions that he could add to my account that would extend my contract. He found a 100 minute a month bonus offer that extended my contract for a year. He applied it and now I'm locked in again for at least a year with unlimited data. I was out of contract and now I'm good till October 2016

Great.
So you locked yourself in a contract for nothing.
Why not get a subsidized iphone for $199 and lock in for 2 years?

If ATT gets the FCC off their tails I wouldn't be surprised if something like this was coming for ATT customers as well. Truth be told I am shocked Verizon held out this long.

cause i only have one single line on my account and best buy way doesn't work for a single line of unlimited data. i read some people were downgraded to 2gb from unlimited i don't want to risk loosing it at best buy. you probably have dump phone you upgraded or transferred line i don't have any of that.

So, can this be added without calling Verizon, or should we all call your "buddy"?
