Lest you forget when they try to throttle unlimited data users? They were trying to push them into tiered pricing, hence money grab.

Or how about the time they almost decided to charge two dollars a month extra to pay your bill online? Was that not a money grab opportunity?

Everything is nickeled and dimed.
You're deflecting. I'm not speaking of those other things. Sure they try to make more money; that's capitalism.

This, however, is not that.

If you don't like it, leave it (You could even move over to T-Mobile and you'd get some "likes" from @Applejuiced ;)).

The original intent of Verizon forcing all smartphone users back in the day (usually windows mobile/blackberry/palm treo) to get unlimited data (circa 2004-2009) was because Verizon (and att) publically stated they to "help" consumers avoid sticker shock by having unlimited data.

So by forcing everyone onto the $29.99 unlimited data Verizon reasoned it was in consumers best interest to have a uniformed billing process with the same bill every month.

Of course those days blackberry users were using on average 25-50mb month back in the days.

Now it's a money grab for carriers for tiered data. Because they can't make money off texting or voice anymore. Data is only line of growth.
And like any smart company, they found how to make money and adopt in the industry.

Also, I'm not sure everyone here is talking about the same unlimited data plan.

No one used some ****** non-iPhone data capable device before the iPhone for $30 unlimited/month. If you did, then you probably do deserve unlimited because building a time machine is no easy feat.

Early 2011, Verizon and Apple announced iPhone 4 for Verizon (hey it was actually Tim Cook back when he was CFO and typical white CEO guy who sounds just like the stereotypical guy to run Verizon). Exactly the same phone as AT&T expect for 3 notable differences.

1. Obviously its on Verizon and not AT&T. So GSM vs CDMA.

2. Because its on Verizon, it uses its plans. Verizon offered $30/unlimited as an incentive to get people to upgrade to the iPhone.

3. Had tethering in a Verizon only iOS update. AT&T would later get it via their own update, but in the press conference, it was considered as a feature for only to Verizon customers.

-------

Basically now, everyone has a smartphone. No one needs an incentive to upgrade as long as Apple keeps on making hella hot colors like that yummy rose gold LOL.

Money grab is kinda a strange word to use considering you (the consumer) seems to also be grabbing their data. Money grabbing, is literally grabbing the money from your friend while playing Monopoly because he wants to make some stupid ass trade, then you end up loosing a friend after drinks, the board, and the table are spilled.

This sound more, how can I say it? Normal? It sounds kinda like a trade in where there's a contract. I think the trade works by you giving them $$$ and they giving you D A T A to use.

Plus, no one here actually reads the terms of service just like how we don't read the terms of service to anything, including that iTunes one. That one, is simply...only Apple could do something so amazing.

Dag that sucks! I hope ATT leaves us alone. I'm not sure how many unlimited users they have on their network but hopefully its not enough to make a significant impact

How much data to people use? Holy ****. They probably stream "things" everywhere they go.

Had to give up unlimited 3G after using my iPhone 4 for 4 years. When the iPhone 6 came out, I couldn't give a **** if I was forced to loose it. Preordered that larger screen at midnight.

It didn't even make sense because at most, if I pushed it, I would have used maybe like 5GB. No normal person uses that much, really 2GB at most. Maybe teens/college students since we're always on Snapchat and stuff. Normal people outside of MR simply can't comprehend why so much data is being used.

I also like how people think they have an actual legal excuse to do something. The only right you have is to drop Verizon.

you were not forced to give it up . You were uneducated about all the loopholes and could have easily kept it and some of us live in rural areas and that's our only source for broadband so don't judge ! I only used 438 gigs last month on my Verizon LTE connection mainly for work reasons

I can only assume I'm missing a joke here...

It's none of my business, so you're certainly entitled not to answer, but what in the world are you doing to consume 438GB's of mobile data in a month?!?!

Problem is with this is, it sets a precedent. and since MOST GUP users are month to month, whats keeping them from saying "next month pay us X amount to keep it." some point they're gonna snatch every single plan back, just a matter of how far they're willing to push it.
Well, nothing is to stop them. At that point, I'm free to consider other carriers however.

This sense of entitlement is ridiculous. Nowhere did they say that your LTE data plan was a replacement for home internet.
Replacement for home internet? Maybe not. But when they offer (still today) a $30/mo hotspot feature for those with unlimited data... it seems to me they are happy to let people use gobs of data. In fact when the Thunderbolt came out (their first LTE phone), they advertised sharing data with friends off of it (this is when they launched unlimited data hotspot). They pretty much pushed binged data on people in commercials with video streaming, video chats, sharing your data with friends, etc.

However... I am not complaining about a $20 bump. $50/mo for unlimited data is still highly underpriced and I am happy to pay it. I love their hotspot feature and use it daily as my internet connection. It is faster than most wifi networks available and it is private offering more security than a public wifi hotspot while on the go.

I know it wasn't directed at me but I'll offer an answer.

Apple TV with Netflix, Hulu and iTunes shows. Sharing the connection with my wife and kid on their limited data phones. Working remotely in IT. I pull 100-200GB/mo. My current bill is $150/mo, soon to be $170/mo. This is just my line.

I have and they don't offer unlimited data for a damn good reason. Because of people like you.

They do still offer unlimited data still on certain accounts . You should look into buying one of them instead of crying about not having one :)

I do have one

But you don't see me using 100+ gigs and then bragging about it on the Internet ;)

Crap like this is precisely the reason why even TMobile is basically not offering unlimited anymore. Throttling after 21gb

Last post on this subject but how is me using 5 or 500 gigs effecting you? Are you the Verizon data police ? How much data do you think that I should be using on a plan that was sold to be as a replacement for home internet ?

I was sold an Unlimited Mobile broadband plan and it was sold to me for just that reason there is no voice plan on this line.
No no no. You see, we Internet users know what Verizon was thinking when they sold unlimited broadband plans. Silly person. Of course they didn't mean for your broadband only line to be your main Internet line. Nor did they intend those with hotspot plans to share that data with non phone devices. They intended for you to use 2GB/mo on only your phone and USB modem... Ah ah ah... That does not mean your laptop attached to the modem they sold you with unlimited data either.

/s

Seriously though... Back in 2011 they advertised the hell out of these things for these purposes exactly. Why do people feel the need to bitch and moan about users who paid for this for years and utilize it how it was originally advertised?

Dag that sucks! I hope ATT leaves us alone. I'm not sure how many unlimited users they have on their network but hopefully its not enough to make a significant impact
Since AT&T doesn't allow hotspot on old unlimited plans they probably don't have as big of an impact. AT&T recently raised the throttling threshold to 22GB from 5GB. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they increase the price at some point.

Me too. On the old plans you are paying for your device no matter what, the subsidy is built in and you don't get a discount for being out of contract. And I pay way less than any mobile share plan. Unlimited data, Unlimited text and unlimited minutes for $79.99 then 20% discount. This is with AT&T.

On these plans it's a no brainier to upgrade subsidized every two years.
The only downside is the phone is locked.

This isn't any different from insurance policies.

If you go out and buy a Civic and keep wrecking it, it will raise insurance premiums for every one. Shared common resources.

WHO does subsidies anymore?!?

Many people still do and work out better and cheaper than those share plans without having to make monthly payments on your phone for 2-3 years.
Dont buy the hype, do the actual research and look at numbers.
The mobile share plans and monthly installments on your bill for the phone benefit the carrier and that's why they're pushing it so hard.

eh, those people are going at it now. i couldn't care less at this point.

i got unlimited. they don't.

i don't have to worry about overages, they do.

i don't have to change my phone/internet habits, they do.

I'm still gonna use my 20gb or so a month with reckless abandon. maybe more.
this is a battle between the have's and the have nots.

the reasoning behind not using something in accordance with someone else's perceived notions is absurd. i paid 50$ for unlimited data and mobile hotspot. i used the data and the hotspot. PERIOD. Sure i hit over 100GB. not sorry for that. that IS the product verizon sold me.

WHO does subsidies anymore?!?

I absolutely do. Why pay a thousand bucks for a phone, obsessively high monthly tiered phone costs subject to whatever increase at any given time? What "freedom" are you really fighting/desiring for?

I've been on subsidy for years and plan to continue..

I pay a fraction of the costs as others on their freedom plans.. 30 Unlimited data, 20 unlimited texts, 40 unlimited talk and for my 6+ 64G I think I paid $400 (Maybe $150 net after selling my IP5).

I don't hop around to from company to company and my phone is unlocked IF I need to use another sim across seas.

I would be a fool not to stay on contract and purchase through subsidy. Same for others in my boat as well.
