I'm surprised people are just finding this out lol.
Once you get the phone. you have to wait til after activation call them and tell them to waive the fee and they will waive it or credit the account. I have done this every year for the last 6 or so years. they have never said no. Being said we have been with verizon since i was 14 so 14 years or so.

I've done this a few times in the past with the iPhone and iPad and got a Yes on the first try. Maybe it was a little harder this time since I asked on pre-order day.

Verizon is terrible to current customers. I remember they were advertising all kinds of discounts and incentives. I tried getting one for my wife's line, they would only give anything if she was switching to Verizon.....they figure once they have you, they assume they keep you. After 3 tries, she switched to AT&T.
Now I am looking to purchase the new phone, seeing on MacRumors all these discounts for switching, nothing for existing customers. And for my trouble, they hit me with the $40 activation, my stupidity for not choosing the unlocked sim free option. I will definitely be calling Verizon to waive that....it's ridiculous.

Not just Verizon. Look at cable, Fios, or satellite. Great offers to get you to sign up. Then once you're a customer, practically nothing.

Tried to get Comcast to give me a better rate after being a customer for 20 years, but they wouldn't. A week after I canceled, they sent me all kinds of great deals to re-sign, but it was too late. Now they have lost a customer, instead of just offering me a discount to begin with.

Seems like they have this fee because not everyone calls in to ask to have it removed. I wonder if they figured you ask, they will just do it. The people who don't ask, well, it's free money for Verizon.
That's pretty much walking the line of something that really should be illegal, and at the very least is certainly in unethical territory.

I got that fee waived at time of order and a full credit for my Device Dollars.

I agree that Verizon has really gone down in customer service, but I’ll never go to AT&T and I don’t trust T-Mobile’s coverage, although I did like them a lot when I was on them. Sprint is not an option and neither are the regional carriers.

Other than my bill payments and the iPhone upgrade, I don’t deal with them.

Then do a Verizon MVNO like we do—same coverage and speeds for half the cost.

Yepper...but as long as the people keep giving them their $$$$, they will continue to do them in. I like to think of them as drug dealers on the street. The pushers will give you free/discounted drugs to get you hooked - then they got you. You will pay them anything - anything at all - to keep supplying you with Heroin, Morphine, etc. Steady income for the pushers. Girls have it easier - if they can't come up with the cash, their bodies will suffice. Extreme analogy but that's how I see it with these cable/telecom companies.

I was charged on one of my phones. I did iUP on both, which only one got charged. Oddly enough it was the one that I had to reverify the SIM online since I was having activation issues. I chatted with the rep and they agreed to credit the upgrade fee to my account.

I remember when I got my iPhone 5 and asked why I had to pay an upgrade fee when there was never one before. The answer was “everyone else is doing it”. Now it’s $40? Get the **** out.
