That's not a very logical conclusion, H.264 requires far more processing power than flash does.

Yes, but if there is dedicated H.264 hardware then it will be easier on the battery since the software doesnt have to encode/decode everything; especially if the hardware is very efficient at what it does. Think software cache vs a hardware cache.

when typing in a name on MAPS, the first thing it does is search your contacts ( even first names) I use it as a poor man's search function. Actually works pretty good. But alas, I await a real search function as well......

This does kinda work, you can search on contacts (first and last name only) by typing in just a few characters, i.e. "Jo" will bring up John Joanne Jonathan Joseth "Jackie Joiner Smith" etc

Caveats:

1) Doesn't work if you have the contact entered as the "Comany Name" field - this seems to me as a BUG in Maps. Companies have addresses that should be mappable too, right?

2) Doesn't search any other fields other than First Name or Last Name. i.e. doesn't search phone number, notes associated, etc

PS: I'll submit bug report to apple about #1 today.

Great update!

A really great update. Wifi reception
and connection is much improved. The phone works
better. Some places I had problems with before now work
like a charm. Overall speed of iPhone OS is improved.
Great!

Anyone else notice that the camera seems to work a lot better? It seems quicker, and can focus closer or something...

Bug in Maps: FYI only, not related to 1.0.2

This is not related to 1.0.2, but has been there awhile, this post is for the user who uses Maps to do the "workaround" "limited character" contact search in Maps. Maps will not search on company name, nor any other fields.

Bug reported today in Apple Bug Reporter. Here's the text I submitted in Apple's preferred format (bug #5429091):

Summary:
Probably occurred in 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 as well.
iPhone map search feature doesn't use Company field in search.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Mare sure iPhone is on.
2. Add a contact with just Firstname and Lastname, include an address.
i.e. John Smith 1 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203
3. Add a contact with just Company name, include an address.
i.e. Apple Computer 1 Infinite Loop Cupertino, CA 95014
4. Goto Home->Maps
5. Touch the search field.
6. Type in a few characters of the firstname, i.e. "Jo".
7. The contact with just the Firstname and Lastname will show in the list.
6. Type in a few characters of the just Company name contact, i.e. "App"

Expected Results:
1. The Apple Computer contact should appear in the list, but doesn't.

Actual Results:
1. List was blank

Regression:
1. Occurs all the time.

Notes:
Company only contacts should be searchable as well as FirstName LastName contacts. There are countless times when a contact could just be a company name, such as a dog groomer "Pup n Suds" where you don't have a person to contact, just the main number and an address.

A suggestion is to allow typed character searching in Phone->Contacts and Maps and other places where Contacts is searchable. The character searching should take into consideration all fields in the contact, firstname, lastname, notes, phone numbers, company name, etc. This would be very helpful if you forget someone's name but remember another bit of information about that person or company or contact, and could type that bit of information in and Contact search would search everypart of the contact info, not just FirstName LastName.

ok so no joke. My speaker phone on my iphone has been useless since I bought it on june 29th.. I noticed there was some "shmeg" is a few of the speaker holes. after poking them with a tiny pin, the volume increased , ever so slightly. tonight I tried cleaning the speaker hole with a toothbrush, and when I pushed the bristles hard into the speaker of my f@#%ing 600 dollar phone, the speaker worked nearly as good as any of those free phones you can get. Now I dont want to carry around a toothbrush to use my speakerphone, but it seems a lot of others find the speaker phone to be useless due to lack of volume. IT got MUCH louder when i stuck a freaking toothbrush in there. Is my phone defective? ....

No, I think your tooth brush is defective. It's trying to act more like a speaker instead of a tooth brush.

That's not a very logical conclusion, H.264 requires far more processing power than flash does.

The iPhone's CPU, a Samsung S3C6400 features a hardware H.264 decoder, allowing efficient, low power-draw deocoding of H.264 media.

I've observed much less battery use in watching an hour of H.264 video on the iPhone as compared to various other activities on the device.

blakespot

Before I take this baby back I thought I would consult ya'll and see if any of you are having the same problem I am having. I was hoping the 1.02 update would fix it but alas it has not.

My best description --> Every once and a while my speaker and mic shut off. If I am on a call people on the other end cannot hear me and I cannot hear them. It just goes to silence. I can make calls when its acting up and I can see that it connects to the other person but I cannot talk to them or hear them.

I also cannot hear the "click" sounds of my keypad.

I found that if it randomly starts doing this I can plug my head-mic-phones in and it works just fine. Its as if the iPhone, when it starts acting up, thinks my headphones are plugged in.

Restoring is the only way I have found to get it working again, and sometimes it randomly starts working again as well...

Anyone??

I has this problem too and then noticed I only had 73MB free on it. You should be leaving 10% free, or 700MB on an 8GB model (which formatted is closer to 7GB). Deleted some videos and my problems disappeared.

Hrm. I don't have any problems on mine, and I've only got 22.3 MB free.

I'm assuming that you can hear everything when this happens if you plugin th e headphones?

chances are, you are right, it is thinking the head phones got plugged in. I'd bet that plugging them in and removing them once or twice would set it back to normal. Maybe clean out your headphone jack and make sure there is nothing in there that is triggering the switch?

NEW FEATURE: ability to add email addresses to new or existing contacts from the SMS program. Before update 1.0.2, you could only click on an email link in SMS to send an email; now there's a blue arrow besides the email link. This arrow slides up a menu giving you the ability to add the email address to new or existing contacts.
just an FYI.

Also works for phone numbers

Camera Is More Functional

Anyone else notice that the camera seems to work a lot better? It seems quicker, and can focus closer or something...

There is no doubt about it, the camera is improved. I just noticed when I was snapping a picture of a car and then I started walking with the camera pointed at the ground. At that point, I noticed that my feet weren't just a blur, you could still see detail.

Upon closer inspection, you'll see that the camera doesn't now try to give you a continuous shot, instead it seems to be staggered to give you a snapshot every tenth of a second or so...

But this greatly imporves the camera's functionality in taking pictures when either the object in the picture is moving or the hand holding the camera is moving.:)

yeah, I think they fixed the signal fluctuation problem. i was seeing this too.

assuming you're talking about phone signal strength, and not airport, that fix would be huge for me. my phone was nearly unusable at one of my two primary locations because of wildly fluctuating signal strength, and i had plans to return it to the store tomorrow. fingers crossed...

REPORTED FIXES

7) Phone signal fluctuation problem when standing in one place fixed.

For me, this is NOT fixed. I saw this at home consistently with 1.0 and 1.0.1. Updated to 1.0.2 today at work, came home, and went into Stocks. While downloading data, phone went from 5 bars to 1 bar (dropping the EDGE connection). Received an "error downloading data" message in Stocks. EDGE came back a few seconds later (still one bar), and then reception returned to 5 bars a few seconds after that.

The phone wasn't moved the whole time, nor was I holding it (which I suppose could affect the antenna).

Does anyone else still see this problem with 1.0.2? Did I need to "soft reset" after I upgraded to update the phone in some way?

To those reporting 1.0.2 added bluetooth syncing support; that's definitely there in (at least) 1.0.1.. just tested with 1.0.1 and it synced to by mbp just fine.

Reported available features are: Handsfree Gateway, Phonebook, Headset Gateway, IrMC Sync
