Maps can search!

when typing in a name on MAPS, the first thing it does is search your contacts ( even first names) I use it as a poor man's search function. Actually works pretty good. But alas, I await a real search function as well......

From the people who brought us Sherlock and Spotlight- still no way to search contacts? And you are all whining about speaker volume? I agree it's weak- but, how hard would it be to add a search tool? Need some support here people- add search to contacts now!

I was on the phone with Apple support Wednesday(powerblock quit working). I reported this bug. The guy hadn't herd of this issue. Was ready to ship me a loaner and have me ship my phone. Timing wasn't convenient so I didn't take him up on the offer, yet.

So, Apple isn't admitting this issue is a bug. Maybe it is hardware, especially when you read here that many are not having this crash. If you have the safari crash, especially after 1.0.2, I suggest calling Apple and have them 'fix' your phone. I still think it's software, but apparently not enough people are reporting it to apple.

I'm hoping 1.0.2 fixes it, but I said the same about 1.0.1.

Most likely the contents of one's iPod will be a factor in whether the bug surfaces. It could be a combination of playlist complexity, mixed content, encoding format, bit-rate, protected/unprotected, video vs. podcast -- everybody's iPod content will vary, so the occurrence of the bug will vary.

I still experience the bug constantly when listening to music and browsing at the same time on 1.0.2.

mine has never crashed using my ipod and safari - and I use both all the time

It's reports like this that have me thinking it could be hardware. I called Apple support this morning(iPod crashing while surfing). They're sending me a loaner phone to use while mine is in for repair. So, once I get the loaner loaded up with my tunes and bookmarks, I'll quickly know if its the phone, or the particular sites I visit.

I have no complaints w/ apple support. They're friendly, and do everything they can to help with issues. Hopefully this is a hardware issue, that's quickly identified by them, and resolved.

You could be right, and I agree it feels like software, and possibly something to do with a combination of things. I don't do anything fancy. I have 1.2 gig free, so my phone isn't full. This is why I'm sending my phone in for repair. If it's hardware I'll know quickly when I try my combination of songs/sites... If it's software, it'll give Apple a working example of the problem(my combo of data), so they can work on it.

I suggest you and anyone else with constant iPod crashes do the same. Send it in, and make sure Apple is aware of the problem. Or better yet, hope a new phone is the answer and you can be done with it.

There's a little more to it than that. One of the reasons given for not supporting Flash initially was that it would drain the battery faster. Now that Flash will support H.264, that issue goes away. It's not rumor or speculation, just a logical conclusion that the iPhone will now support it.
That's not a very logical conclusion, H.264 requires far more processing power than flash does.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I haven't gotten a single "Message cannot be downloaded." error in the Mail.app all morning, an error I was regularly encountering before. Is it just me?

I also got hundreds of names, If Im looking for John I click on the "J" letter on the left and scroll to find the right number.
If looking for bill example and so on.
"Seeking career" click the letter "C" obviously.
To me it would be useless, I had that feature on my previous Motorola phone and never searched/used it once.

I'm not sure if this guy just didn't read the post he's talking about, which is a bad policy; is making a joke, in which case he needs to use the appropriate emoticon; or is just stupid, in which case this post will be fairly insulting. :)

As for "I had the feature on my previous phone and never used it," wasn't that one reason Steve told us he wanted to make a phone, because the other companies make such bad user interfaces, nobody uses their phone's features?

I agree, search would be nice for contacts, songs, e-mails, etc...
I'd like to see "back to my Mac" on the phone.

Even when playing iTunes Music Store content?
I have had the same problem, intermittently. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it does not, which suggests the iPod and Safari have conflicting programming, and some how Safari wins out. Perhaps Safari tries to take over memory when a large page is loaded and the iPod can't allocate additional memory for reading the next part of te song file from the flash memory? I'm guessing here.

People, I totally appreciate your optimism, but it seems that most don't actually realize what Flash is. Flash is first and foremost a vector-based animation engine. Originally, it was most commonly used to make flashy animated menus for websites and a lot of 2D animated cartoons were created with it. It's literally an animation package. That is, people import pictures and define shapes and then place them on the canvas and create a script that moves them all around scaling and twisting and animating each character on the screen.

Traditionally, the computer reads the flash file and then your flash plugin actually renders the animation in real time similar to how 3D games are rendered in realtime. Years later Adobe added the ability to output non-interactive flash content to streaming video formats and Flash became popular as a streaming video tool. But that is only one small piece of what Flash is. So while, yes, h.264 streaming would be easy to support, there's still the other 99% of Flash that would have to be implemented including the realtime rendering engine and interactive features.

As others have pointed out, that's not just a matter of CPU power. There are technical issues such as the lack of a "mouse over" event. A lot of flash content is interactive with the mouse and rely's heavily on the mouse over event to trigger certain parts of animated menus or interactive games.

Ditto.

People need to realize what Flash and Flash video are (and their differences) and how all of this works. First of, Flash has a lot more going for it than just YouTube videos (as you mentioned above). The way that it works is that many different types of media and files can be read by the Flash plug-in (SWF). Files such XML, TXT, JPEG, PHP, ASP, FLV as well as many others can all be read and interpreted by Flash. This is one of the many strengths of Flash - it can be used for quite a variety of tasks, not just pretty animations. So, when you are watching a video in a Flash environment, what you are actually looking at is a Flash SWF file (this is the "skin" that gives you the video and sound controls, etc.) reading a Flash video file (FLV). With the acceptance of h.264 video files for Flash all that is changing is that the Flash SWF file can now read h.264 videos as well as FLV files. That's it.

H.264 is not replacing the SWF format. H.264 videos are not going to be working like Flash files and no magic dust is going to turn this into Flash working on the iPhone (at least not yet).

Besides the items you mentioned above (mouse overs and such), Flash is also more CPU and GPU dependent when doing its math as opposed to being hardware dependent. This unfortunately means that is is much more of a battery drain then you want on a mobile phone.

I'm not saying that Flash is isn't coming to the iPhone (I think that this is something that can be worked on by Adobe and Apple real soon). All I'm saying is that the new beta Flash plug-in utilizing h.264 video has no significant bearing on Flash coming to the iPhone.

Much better wi-fi performance

I use a un-modded iPhone.

This latest update has improved my wi-fi reception. I have also noticed that the phone switches between edge and wi-fi much quicker/smoother than before.

The phone also connects to wi-fi much quicker when coming out of stand by.

BUT....

The ipod function still crashes when browsing in Safari. It literally crashed about 45 seconds after I started browsing parts of apple.com:rolleyes:

Were there always 3 options at the bottom of Safari settings? After the update I'm seeing:

Clear History
Clear Cookies
Clear Cache

I don't remember the "Clear Cache" option.

#6 was there at least by 1.0.1 (if not earlier). But DEFINITELY there before I installed 1.0.2. Definitely. Maybe.

I have 1.0.1
There is a share button in Safari.
There is a "Clear Cache button" in settings.

The ipod function still crashes when browsing in Safari. It literally crashed about 45 seconds after I started browsing parts of apple.com:rolleyes:

Funny. Mine only lasts 30 seconds.

Edit: Just tested again, iPod lasted 10 seconds.

I don't know what you guys are doing to crash safari with the iPod running...it's happened to me maybe twice before the first update and never since.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it seems to happen a lot more to some people than others.

My only mod was ringtones... from the Apple store thank you... update swacked the iPhone but the update, restore and re whatever else is going very well ... songs and such going in as I type...

Am I missing something major here? You can get ringtones from the Apple store?! Is this online or at a store? What kind of ringtones are they?

How? I still can't pair to a computer.

Worked for me, I just used the same operation you use to pair any BT device!

not sure if this is merely a "coincidence," but immediately after downloading 1.0.2, my un-modded/hacked phone displayed an error message stating that it needed to be fixed and was unable to make/receive calls.

once the sync was complete, nothing that required the antenna was working properly and the signal bars, at&t & edge symbols were all gone. after resetting the phone, rebooting the computer, etc., removing/reseating the sim, etc. still nothing. tried to restore several times and each time it would go through what i assume is most of the restore process only to end with an "unknown error (1011)" message, with the phone stuck in recovery mode. after fiddling with this for a couple hours i went to bed.

this morning i talked to apple support and they could not resolve the issue, even after bringing someone from the engineering group on the line. they said they had no reports of similar problems in their database. anyway, the long and the short of it is that i had to make an appointment at the applestore for tonight and if they can't fix it, they are supposed to give me a new phone. what a pain in the ass. at least the apple support folks were easy to deal with.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone that buys a refurbished iPhone. I wonder if the ear piece will be clean, etc.

I sort mine with first name first.
So if you just remember their first name then you'll scroll thru a few john's and find the right one.
And like you're going to remember someones street address but not their name? :D
lol ok

I have contacts that I only know by their company name, not the actual person. So, it would be nice to have the ability to search that would match to other data fields in the contacts.

ok, so this is really weird. If you stick the brussles of a tooth brush into the speaker if my iPhone, it gets way!!!! Louder. My speaker is useless as a speaker phone, so I tried to clean it. Does not remain at this volume only when bristles are pushed in side.

Same effect probably as if you hold the iPhone and cup your hand around the speaker. The reflection of the sound from an object (hand, toothbrush, white iPhone dock, etc) makes the sound appear louder since it's concentrating the soundwaves in a "single" direction.

Agreed. I notice nothing different at all. I think some of you may benefit from rebooting your phone every once and a while, this has fixed problems with Wifi speed, scrolling speed, crashing applications, etc. in the past, and no need to wait for apple to publish an update ;)

I'm sure that the update has done something, for someone, but I haven't noticed a damn thing. Then again, I have never had the ipod crash while using safari either.

Question for those of you that had to restore:

Did it keep contact pictures associated with your contacts that are no longer in your iphone photo library? (I will clarify if needed)

Please see list post #229 on page 10 of this forum.

There are a few tweaks which benefit several different types of users

For example the "Send to the Gallery" feature is now stable and working with this update. This allows you, if you have a .Mac email account, to send photos straight from the iPhone to the apple web gallery which could be shared with friends and family. One simple command, and all your peeps can see the picture to elected to show them.

My biggest issue was my secondary email setup (after my initial POP3 email setup) for GMail did not hold it's password, so I couldn't get or send any GMail. This is verified as fixed with 1.0.2. You can imagine how frustrating that was.

To answer your question about "power off then on and you see changes". This is untrue, I've powered my phone off and then on maybe 2-3 times a week and had not seen the wi-fi speed like I experience with the 1.0.2 now. I connect to my home wi-fi everyday while I watch TV during the commercials to surf and read incoming emails.

Searching contacts by a just a few characters enhancement.

I have contacts that I only know by their company name, not the actual person. So, it would be nice to have the ability to search that would match to other data fields in the contacts.

I'd have to agree, my wife's a real estate agent and she's got a Treo700p (and my previous late 90's Kyocera 6025 and Treo650) which allows you to search by just a few characters that you remember of any part of the contact info. Not that I'm a big Treo fan, but in that regards it's got a feature better than iPhone. (this statement was made to get under the skin of the iPhone developers, I'm sure they can't stand it when other phones do a better job at something, I know I would if I was proud of my work)

I would, include as a architect-programmer myself, the ability to search by a few characters as a 2nd level feature, in other words, it should have been there day 1 or soon after. There must be a reason why apple has not made this feature available to us.

I would ask that everyone get on apples dev website, and submit an enahancement request for this. This will tell apple how crucial it is to have this feature if they hear it loud enough.
