i keep getting an error after the update downloads in itunes but before it loads onto my phone:

"there was a problem downloading the iphone software....An unknown error occurred (-48).

Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again."

anyone else?

Yes, and my phone is NOT modded. But it kept downloading despite the error message, and when I went to iTunes to search for updates, it showed that I have the latest update.

I appreciate bug fixes as much as the next guy, but two months in, I'm about ready for some actual improvments to the phone. New apps, copy and paste, custom ringtones, IM, general enhancements

Really, this is quite a change from people's regular idea about their phone. It's good that Apple is changing people's expectations :)

When was the last time you got a new phone, and then expected new functionality to be added in the coming months?

I read that Adobe is updating its Flash to support H.264, but I am not sure what that means, or how that will help with existing Flash based sites.... Anyone know?

In particular, I wonder if a Flash-h264 file is more easily supported by the iPhone than a 'regular' Flash file?

I imagine Apple could support Flash-h264 files without Adobe's help?

Fixed bugs, enhancements, issues, and new bugs - a list

Here's the list so far, from the posts here and other sites in the first 5 hours since 1.0.2 has been out.

REPORTED BUGS NEW TO 1.0.2, OR AT LEAST HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY WITH 1.0.2

1) Playing music in iPod then surfing in Safari sometimes causes iPod music playback to stop. Was scrolling pretty fast up and down the MSNBC or FOXNEWS home page which is several pages worth in portrait mode. Fast: as in seeing the gray-white matrix show when Safari hasn't yet repainted the display. When re-entering iPod app, music was not paused, it was simply stopped and no indication that it has ever played (for example was not shown as halfway played, etc). This occurred with 8 Safari browsers running at the same time. Last page being viewed was MSNBC or FOXNEWS. With 1.0.0, I had seen this. 1.0.1 seemed to have fixed this for me. 1.0.2 seems to have broken it again.

2) Possible increased battery depletion and increased heating. Please monitor this and see if you experience this. Could be the increased WiFi and/or Edge speeds seen sucking the battery down faster. I personally would rather have better speeds since a charger is not too far away (car, house, work, etc).

REPORTED ISSUES WITH UPGRADE

1) As before with 1.0.1, people who've hacked anything (except apparently for just Ring Tones) are experiencing, once again, issues updating. Play with fire, you get burned. Backup fools. Many reported iPhoneringtonemaker is the only hack to not force restore.

REPORTED FIXES

1) Wi-fi connections "seem" better.

2) Wi-fi connections way faster.
Update: I too experience way faster Wi-Fi speeds, my DSL 1.5mps and Wireless Router on top of that loads the MSNBC and FOXNEWS websites blazingly fast, they crept along before 1.0.2.

3) Safari is "snappier".

4) Secondary email setup (POP3 then later on added GMail) now is holding onto password, was forgetting it with 1.0.0 and 1.0.1. Verified on more than one iPhone! A true bug fix.

5) Photos menu forward photo now is displaying "Send to Web Gallery" consistantly if you have .Mac email setup. Was sometimes working, was sometimes not working. Seems to work consistantly now.

6) MOVED TO WISHFUL THINKING

7) Phone signal fluctuation problem when standing in one place fixed.

8) Sometimes you couldn't close vertical tabs while in landscape mode because the title of the pages would block out the close button. Now, if you switch modes with multiple pages open, the tabs automatically change to the correct mode and you can close them properly!
Update: Some 1.0.2 users recently report they can't get this to work. I will try on my 1.0.2 and verify.

9) You are now able to scroll properly in Safari as the page is still loading whereas before it would mostly not allow you to scroll.
Update: Seems that several minor tweaks to Safari browsing have been made with better scrolling being one of them.

10) MOVED TO WISHFUL THINKING

11) Learning dictionary is actually learning. The "vrillusions" user name example, or other "weird" usernames not in standard dictionaries.

12) MOVED TO WISHFUL THINKING

13) Bluetooth pairing with my imac, didn't find any compatible devices prior to 1.02 now it lets you pair the iphone and enter a pin but still doesn't add any usable items after the iphone is paired.
Update: Bluetooth pairing seems to be working better, but the above scenario obviously doesn't net you anything. At least apple is working on fixes, however hidden they are.

REPORTED BUT NOT THERE (WISHFUL THINKING)

1) New wallpapers - 1.0.2 has no new wallpapers.

2) World peace - still not there in 1.0.2

3) Email Advanced Options - was there previous to 1.0.2

4) "Clear Cache" option added - was there previous to 1.0.2

5) Share url button in Safari added. Allows you to quickly email the URL to someone or multiple people. New feature added.
Update: A few 1.0.1 users report this was there at least with 1.0.1.
I wish my wife would break down and get an iPhone, then I could keep her 1 revision back to see what's changed!

6) While in Safari if you tap the top tool bar it will scroll back to the top of the page.
Update: Was in previous version pre 1.0.2

7) More visible sliderbar appears when you touch the quick alpha-shortcut tab in the contact view and ipod albums views.
Update: Was in previous version pre 1.0.2

After update songs played with static for a while

I did the update perfectly in a non hacked iPhone. I was listening to some songs with the speaker about 4 minutes afterwards, and 3 songs sounded so staticky I thought the battery was sizzling. It was like frying eggs on top of the songs. Did it for a few songs.

Turned it off. When on again it was perfect. I was on Safari at the same time when the problem happened.

No big deal.

I May Not Recall The Name!

Why would you bother typing in a search where you can just click on the right of the address book?
From there using the first letter of their name will get you the info you need way faster than trying to search.
A search to locate a name would be useless to me where I can do it with a few touches in seconds.

Because I can't recall everyone's NAMES. I may be lookng for a KEYWORD.

e.g.

I met Joey at the BBQ party. I enter Joey's name as a contact, and in the Notes sectin of his contact entry, I enter "BBQ party." Now it's several months later. I can't recall the name of that guy, but I do recall that I met him at some BBQ. On my Cingular 8525 (a Pocket PC phone), I'd simply type a search for "BBQ," and it would bring up related data (contacts, calendar events, notes, documents) associated with BBQ.

Understand? :)

I was never able before to get a song in iTunes to play all the way through without stopping if I was simultaneously browsing in Safari.

Just applied the update.

This was the first thing I tried. Started a song playing and visited multiple websites that have stopped the music before. I also opened multiple windows just to work the system harder.

The song played all the way through, flawlessly.

Looks like this issue might be fixed?!?!?!

This update thing is fun. It's almost like Christmas. It's exciting to see an update and apply it, knowing that your iPhone will only get better and better. And all we've seen so far are bug fixes.

Just imagine how exciting it will be when the first new "official" icon pops up on the main menu!

I don't have this problem. I've seen it happen once or twice and I just restart the phone. Only takes a couple seconds. Just like any phone or computer it needs to be turned on and off once in awhile. The RAM is pretty limited for what you're asking a device to do, so it needs to be defragmented. Just my best guess.

Last update everyone thought it fixed the problem too. I'm thinking it was just the first time they actually restarted their phone. Well, actually the installer did it. But same difference.

I have standard, 8GB iPhone.
No hacks.
All software up-to-date on a 4-day old black MacBook.

Can confirm #5 - "Send to Web Gallery" present & stable. And I do have a .mac account.

#6 was there at least by 1.0.1 (if not earlier). But DEFINITELY there before I installed 1.0.2. Definitely. Maybe.

#8 does NOT work for me. With multiple pages open, I still cannot close Vertical pages due to overlapping text. And those pages do not rotate when I rotate device.

#9 confirmed.

Huh, never noticed #10 until I read this. Neat. Don't know how long that feature has been here, but I have it now.

#12 confirmed. Nice.

HTH

6) Share url button in Safari added. Allows you to quickly email the URL to someone or multiple people. Not New

Been doing that since at least 1.01

Bluetooth pairing anyone?

If anyone has seen this before let us know what you can do with it once it's paired

Safari Settings??

Were there always 3 options at the bottom of Safari settings? After the update I'm seeing:

Clear History
Clear Cookies
Clear Cache

I don't remember the "Clear Cache" option.

Mic/Speaker Randomly Shutting off...

Before I take this baby back I thought I would consult ya'll and see if any of you are having the same problem I am having. I was hoping the 1.02 update would fix it but alas it has not.

My best description --> Every once and a while my speaker and mic shut off. If I am on a call people on the other end cannot hear me and I cannot hear them. It just goes to silence. I can make calls when its acting up and I can see that it connects to the other person but I cannot talk to them or hear them.

I also cannot hear the "click" sounds of my keypad.

I found that if it randomly starts doing this I can plug my head-mic-phones in and it works just fine. Its as if the iPhone, when it starts acting up, thinks my headphones are plugged in.

Restoring is the only way I have found to get it working again, and sometimes it randomly starts working again as well...

Anyone??

For me the screen candy animations seem quicker. Could just be me.

One LITTLE thing I thought they fixed, or would, and have not. The keyboard.

In landscape mode on the standard keyboard config, when you have delete just above return. Press delete and you will see it overlays into the return key. Just a graphical glitch, but its there. Its "sister" key, shift, does not do this to the alpa/symbol key even though they mirror the others.

But I think something did change, before it created a white line on top the return key, now its dark. Unless its a different keyboard config I am thinking of.

Ya, so its stupid, but its a detail.

so when i go to see my photos and i tap on one once the option on the top says photo album and on the left i see a camera logo, meaning to go to camera mode, was that there?

I don't know if this is new, if you double tap on a web page in safari in the corners it pages down or up (double tapping on either bottom corner pages down, the top corners page up)

Edit to add it works best when your zoomed into a section that is long or repeated over and over.

I think that they changed the way the browser animates when being flipped from horizontal to vertical and vise-versa. the icons seem to disappear and re-appear into position. can anybody confirm or deny that this is a changed feature?

I don't know if this is new, it if you double tap on a web page in safari in the corners it pages down or up (double tapping on either bottom corner pages down, the top corners page up)

double tap either the top or bottom of the page to page up or down some. it does seem new!! or maybe just nobody noticed?

I was on the phone with Apple support Wednesday(powerblock quit working). I reported this bug. The guy hadn't herd of this issue. Was ready to ship me a loaner and have me ship my phone. Timing wasn't convenient so I didn't take him up on the offer, yet.

So, Apple isn't admitting this issue is a bug. Maybe it is hardware, especially when you read here that many are not having this crash. If you have the safari crash, especially after 1.0.2, I suggest calling Apple and have them 'fix' your phone. I still think it's software, but apparently not enough people are reporting it to apple.

I'm hoping 1.0.2 fixes it, but I said the same about 1.0.1.

You have misunderstood. You don't report bugs through the Apple support, if you want to make Apple aware of bugs you file a bug report at their developers website. And I can assure you that they have hundreds of bug reports relating to Safari crashing. The support staff typically don't read the bug reports and it is not their job either. There is no official way for Apple to "admit bugs". I would expect the Safari crash issue to be fixed soon. I have not seen it happen under 1.0.2 yet, but I only updated 5 min ago.

F**K I like my hacks, my phone is perfect, looks wise. But i also want some of the " bug fixes ". Damn it! I guess Imo just going to have to re hack my phone when i find some time.
