I don't agree with that either. I think most people would be very happy with a text only based version of iChat. I for one would be very happy with this.

that's what i am saying. :) beside video what else is left to leave out? I guess the file transfer stuff huh? Yes they should drop that for now...

at least until we have some uber filesystem on the iphone with leopard~!

the update will coincide with the new iMirror, which attaches via magnets to the back of your iphone, enabling video conferencing. Trust me. The guy standing outside the ATT store seemed so confident, it must be true. You guys just wait!

LMAO, this iMirror is going to be awesome! I'm going to have to be one of the first to get that one so I can use iChat. :D

yeah dude! I'm gonna start camping outside the apple store for the inevitable release of the iMirror!

LOL u GUYS crack me up i love u guys! lol alright well ichat wit video would be AWESOME.. in a way i believe it b/c iphone is a built in OS LEOPARD.. that means full verison of ichat.. maybe videoing.. if the iphone is 499 n 599 i'm guessing they'll be adding more stuff to it that be worth the money we spend.. who knows.. apple is always full of surprises ! so we'll have to STAY TUNED! :p oh and iMirror... hmmm intersting... u never know...

how would you add copy/paste support anyway...the way the interface works with the magnifying glass appearing when you drag over text seems to imply that if they implimented copy/paste that whole interface element would have to be substantially modified. I just dont see it happening with the way they have designed the software...too many elements central to the user experience would have to be altered and that would be too confusing for the average joe to figure out after having just mastered the iPhone in its present state. If there was something akin to right click (maybe by holding down a finger) in the software that would make this more feasible, but I think that adds complexity that they tried to steer away from in the design of the interface.

two finger drag across a word. would pop up a small menu (cut copy paste) would then aninimate word flying to edge of screen (any of 4 edges) as little word bubble.

that word bubble would stay above all apps and when you want to use it you would drag it to a input field etc...

two finger drag from word bubble would do a copy of the word bubble leaving the original there otherwise word bubble would go away.

double tapping word bubble would show all the text in some sort of nice dialog.

That's my point. Since the network / phone design doesn't support video chats just yet, Apple is going to hold off on iChat until both those things are ready.

huh? it is the number one software request so far. You are saying they are going to hold off on this until they:

have a faster network (3g not everywhere)
have a iphone that uses the faster network
build a version of the iphone who's camera points the other direction

???

Nope. they will just release a text only version of ichat like we mentioned above. ASAP.

If Apple does add iChat, they want to put the ENTIRE iChat on there, not some stripped down mobile version. That means video.

I use iChat often but never video. Got the camera when it first came out (before they started putting iSight on the computer itself) - used it with one person - once! Most of those I communicate with have no video.

probably be a ichat text only... all the phones with video conferencing are 3g and have VGA cameras on the front, i highly doubt we will be getting a full blown ichat app.

Just happened to be on the subway with a Marketing guy from Apple...He had a new inCase protective sleeve that wasn't out on the market yet for his iPhone.

Of course I asked him about the update and when to expect it. He said, its coming out "by the end of the month and will feature Copy-Paste as well as iChat".

So look for the next version in the next 2 weeks. This is no ********. I feel like I'm reporting back to the tribe.

Ha. Can't wait.

Apple employees will not get their iPhones until the end of the month due to an imposed blackout period by Apple; however, as long as they are full time employees they will be getting an 8gig version for free.

Considering it isn't the end of July, I call BS on this story because an employee from the marketing dept wouldn't have an iPhone yet.

actually there have been plenty of pics of apple emps. already with them. these are usually key people involved with the iphone.

If (and I am not saying I believe the guy) if the apple person is for real he or she may be involved with marketing the iphone which would increase the chance of them having one greatly.

So what are their future iPhone plans? And Yea. I have no reason to make it up.
Indeed. I have no idea why people would doubt you. After all, random people on internet chat forums with brand new user registrations are amongst the most trustworthy sources I've known.

I love all the hate. Believe it or not, I could care less. Just reporting what I heard. Never hurts to be skeptical but we'll see by the 31st. I'll bet an iPhone on it.

And dr_lha you are bringing up my new registration as a point of contention? Really Doc?

You don't seem to be comprehending us here.I guarantee you Apple will release iChat for the iPhone without video conferencing support.

i love how the apple marketing rep is risking his job to some stranger on the subway. we will see an update. 2 weeks maybe 1 week maybe 2 days maybe 1 months maybe. maybe, maybe...

I don't think I saw the word 'maybe' once in the original post.

Geez guys, give the guy a break. I don't believe him, or any other rumor I read on here, but two pages of ripping on him?

Now I'm kinda rooting for him and an update to come out by the end of the month so he can get apologies from you all :D

My question is, will the iChat software automatically compensate for the iMirror and flip the image for me? You see, I have this scar on my forehead from when I fought the Dark Lord, Voldemort, and all the girls think it's sexy... I don't think it would look as good backwards.

Not sure if this verifies this guy's source or not, but I brought my iPhone to a Genius at the Soho store complaining about my battery last week. He told me that the staff had just gotten an email from the higher ups saying there would be an update released by next week (this week) that would address the battery issue. He wouldn't say if anything else would be addressed, but he said that my battery issues would definitely be fixed.

If anyone wants to verify this for themselves, bring your iPhone into your nearest Apple Store Genius and ask!

Where did you hear this from? My friend who works at a apple store already has his free one ...

Cell Phone updates

I always was under the impression that phone updates, ui software and firmware, were infrequent because they had to be submitted to the FCC and they had to approve them. Making it such a PITA, that companies hated to do them more than one or two times tops a year.
