So, what are people outside of the Mac-using community saying about Vista? Are they excited? Do they see it as a real improvement in their computer using experience?

My boss, who's been an ardent Windows-loving Mac hater for as long as I've known him, hates Vista after shelling out big bucks for the Ultimate version. He's been telling me for a year it would be better than OS X, but now none of his applications or hardware work well, and he feels the Vista hardware "advisor" program lied to him just to make a sale. (I believe there's even a lawsuit out there because of this.)

He wants a Mac now but can't bring himself to buy one yet. He keeps telling me they're expensive but I showed him how the Dell laptop most similar to my MBP (but still inferior on many counts) is a good $500 more.

No. The blue is ugly and inconsistent. Flip is worthless because you can't see anything when it's stacked like that. I hope to god Apple doesn't do that, but I'm guessing if they did something like it, it would be better. Maybe even more 3-D like Sun's implementation, but good.

Flip is for... well, flipping between windows. On the other hand, each taskbar entry has a mini-preview which means you can preview windows without switching to them. Alt-tab also has an agregated full preview of all the windows. The combination of the three leaves me with no operational disadvantages over Expose. On my laptops, I've also assigned Flip3D to a direct tap on the touchpad and it is in some ways better than moving the pointer to a corner. And quite besides that, if you desperately want Expose under Vista it is available. i.e. You can have your cake and eat it.

You should try and use Vista sometime... best enjoyed on a 'real' PC, not a Mac ;)

I did, tried to play a wmv file without an extension, a real sad experience.

Whatever happened to 'rename' and 'open with..'!? I am totally baffled. Vista is the greatest ad OSX could ever get. People have really weird ideas about enjoyment.

As I said, it's all about options depending on how you like to work.

Yeah, because you like to discover things, and find out how it works best for you. But someone not so computer savvy will never discover these 3 options.

I agree that windows is better for certain tasks, and that it might be a good operating system, IF you know what you are doing. But most people don't, they are happy if they can use email, browse, listen to music and write something.

I believe that for someone who doesn't know much about computers, OS X is the better choice by far.

I remember an argument I had with somebody at grad school about which was the more productive environment, the Mac or PC (then running DOS). She accused me of being lazy, because, as she put it, there wasn't anything you could do on the Mac that you couldn't learn to do on the PC. She was pretty much correct of course, and I happily confessed to being lazy and preferring to get my work done more easily and quickly on the Mac than it would be on the PC.

The Mac v. Windows debate hasn't changed very much. It doesn't seem to matter much to many people that Windows makes many basic tasks more complicated, and learning how to complete them more difficult and arcane. As the argument goes, so long as you can actually accomplish them, the two OSs are essentially equivalent.

DAMMIT!

The mods around here are too quick to delete posts!

I had posted "MAC Sucks" back a few posts, as flamebait. I would then of course have gone on to make a few "Media Access Centre" (or whatever it is) jokes.

But no. The mods had to ruin my fun. Boo!

So yeah. Who else is sick of Macs being called "MAC"s?

I have. Why do you think I don't like it. ;) When it even let me install. Took a couple of tries to get the Beta on my Dell laptop. Couldn't wait to go back to XP. Actually, I long for the days of Windows 2000.

At work I support Macs and PCs. Guess which one I prefer to work on. Not one of my bosses want to roll out Vista anytime soon either. Not one. The only one running it at all is actually someone playing with it in Parallels. No kidding. He doesn't like it either, but he has to use it. Sucks for him. :p

I was running visa under parallels and its crashed! My mac is fine but all I have when I click parallels is a black screen. I installed some windows software yesterday and it was working fine last night. This morning (after leavin on my mac) all I have is this black screen. I try to restart and am offered safe mode or return to last working state etc but whatever I do I just get the black screen after seeing the windows is starting bar. My mac software is perfect-luckily the crashing windows is self contained and not corrupting the rest of the apple software. I hate wndows-what a fool I was thinking I can have my cake and eat it too.

I switched from XP to Vista without any difficulty - no confusion. I dont understand what everyone is confused about. If you cant figure someothing out if an icon is moved over then park the computer and pick up a pen and paper :)

Tell me the UI did not change from OS9 to OSX. Heck everything changed even the keyboard shortcuts that people were used to.

Multiple layouts - its called a choice. People have preferences. Some like it one way, some another. Just because you may not like some of the layouts doesnt make it wrong for another person.

There is nothing to apologize with Vista. Great OS, rock solid and fast.

Fact: user interface change, especially when widgets/layouts/behaviors are inconsistent between apps, leads to user confusion.

Fact: Vista sports a number of different layouts, even within its own bundled apps, that seem to serve no particular purpose.

Fact: Every time someone points this out, you rush in to trumpet how great Vista is.

Fact: You are a Windows apologist.

Hooray facts! :D

Um how about blaming parallels! You're running a version of windows which is very new, on proprietary hardware in a VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT which is another layer of software. I've got two vista machines at home and we've now upgraded about 20 out of the 120 machines at the office to Vista under our software assurance and everything has been bulletproof so ya I'm sure its vista's fault your computer has issues. Hahaha. Come on think about it.

Maybe I should run OSX on a cobled together PC with mystery parts and then go on a PC site and say OSX sucks because it crashed on me. It crashed I say!!

No, at best it's a Birdie. If they can "fix" Flip3D, the sidebar, UAC, and the whacky permissions then maybe it'll be closer.

Maybe to make it closer to OSX, they should add a feature where you have to repair the permissions from time to time as well ;)

Vista ain't too bad actually. I got it up and running on my alienware laptop rather nicely in fact.

Okay it's a tad slow in a few things like quicktime but I've seen lots worse. I think that too many people are dismissing it too quickly.

But no doubt that mac os x is superior in looks and resource mgmt by far. Too much slug on the vista front. But it's M$'s moneyshaker isn't it?
