For a PC running Vista
I'm using Vista.
1. I installed a program from www.no-ip.com that polls your DSL Modem/Router for it's DYNAMIC IP address and automatically uploads it to a FREE Domain URL of your choosing. This way, when your Dynamic address changes, the DNS routers are updated with the info within 5 minutes after the upload. You chose your own Domain Name out of seversl free ones. Go to their website for info on this. You run this utility on your home computer. The address is in the form of whatyouchoose.hopto.org . The whatyouchoose is whatever you dream up for your part of the name.
2. One of the suggested VNC Server softwares was RealVNC. I could not get it to work on Vista through my 2Wire Router no matter what I tried. It did work on the Local area Network, and through the wireless part of my router, but not from the Internet.
3. Then I read the part on here about TightVNC Server and IT WORKS. It works with my wireless 2Wire router (from AT@T DLS service), and from the internet.
4. Make sure you have your Firewall set to allow Ports 5900 and 5800 AND set that in the TightVNC Server along with the right password.
What I like is using the URL provided by www.no-ip.com for keeping my physical Router Dynamic IP address up to date. In VNC Lite, I just entered my Free URL as me.hopto.org and I don't have to worry when my DSL Modem/Router is issued a new Dynamic IP address.
