For a PC running Vista

I'm using Vista.
1. I installed a program from www.no-ip.com that polls your DSL Modem/Router for it's DYNAMIC IP address and automatically uploads it to a FREE Domain URL of your choosing. This way, when your Dynamic address changes, the DNS routers are updated with the info within 5 minutes after the upload. You chose your own Domain Name out of seversl free ones. Go to their website for info on this. You run this utility on your home computer. The address is in the form of whatyouchoose.hopto.org . The whatyouchoose is whatever you dream up for your part of the name.
2. One of the suggested VNC Server softwares was RealVNC. I could not get it to work on Vista through my 2Wire Router no matter what I tried. It did work on the Local area Network, and through the wireless part of my router, but not from the Internet.
3. Then I read the part on here about TightVNC Server and IT WORKS. It works with my wireless 2Wire router (from AT@T DLS service), and from the internet.
4. Make sure you have your Firewall set to allow Ports 5900 and 5800 AND set that in the TightVNC Server along with the right password.

What I like is using the URL provided by www.no-ip.com for keeping my physical Router Dynamic IP address up to date. In VNC Lite, I just entered my Free URL as me.hopto.org and I don't have to worry when my DSL Modem/Router is issued a new Dynamic IP address.

without the ability to downsize resolution from the server, it's kind of useless for clients where the resolution is so high and takes up too much bandwidth.

Also, I think it flat out doesn't work if the resolution is over 2000x2000.

on this note, apple's vnc server that's part of ARD should support 8-bit color....

I've got the application working over Wi-Fi, Edge, and 3G. However, it's hardly impressive considering where the previously mentioned Telekinesis (iPhone Remote) had left off.

I highly suggest iPhone Remote to those of you that are impressed with VNC Lite. The set-up is very much the same and it runs as a Web App (free), so nothing's changed from the first generation iPhone. The thing blows doors on VNC Lite, as far as I can tell.

It has a great UI that easily enables you to browse through your folders to display images, play music files, etc. Many movies stream fine from your computer's HD to your iPhone as well, others don't. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason as to why some do and some don't at this point. However, all of your iTunes music should have no problems streaming straight to your iPhone. The files open in Quicktime, so it enables you to expand your iPhone's music catalog to however large your connected iTunes library is. And now with 3G, there's no longer any hassle of waiting for files to stream.

Anyway, I sound like I work for them. I don't. I just don't see much of a reason to be excited about VNC Lite, when iPhone Remote has been available for so long with streaming content and other features I haven't mentioned. It's also an open-source Google app, so those who can help should get crack'n. ;)

Telekinesis/iPhone Remote

lags over wifi. I have no use for it, but it's cool...and free! easy to set up too.

Ctrl Alt Del

Sorry if this is already here, but I could not find it.

VPN connects, great, can VNC to server, great. But, only Ctrl and Alt are showing. What on earth do you press to emulate DEL?

I have tried many combinations and no luck. Does one just tap Ctrl and Alt, or hold them down together and more importantly, what is the third button?

I am using the Lite (FREE) version

Not in the free version.

Useless...!

I have 2 screens and it cut it down to 1.5 screens. And even on wi-fi, it lags terribly, I can't imagine using it with 3g...

first of all thank you for all the help and i hate to keep asking but i am still having trouble. i think i did everything i was told. i chose port mapping and added 5900 in all the boxes and with 10.0.1.199 in the ip address box. then i put on my iphone my routers ip address in the vnc server ip address box and 5900 in the server port. then i put the vnc password that i had entered in the file sharing option when i first started. still says error though. hopefully someone can help me as i would LOVE for this to work over edge and it would be such a huge help. thanks again guys.

I did the same thing and I still cant get the thing to work either. I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

'VNC Negotiation' fixed

I had the same 'VNC Negotiation' problem may people have reported, even after setting Encryption to 'Prefer off' on the server.

I got it working by make sure I also set Authentication to 'VNC password' as opposed to the default which was 'Windows password'.
Works like a charm. Didn't need to fiddle with any firewall ports seeing as this is just the same internal network I'm connecting to.

dual display/multi screen workaround?

i know their faqs say they don't support dual display/multi screen/monitor, but has anyone found a workaround by selecting one over the other? i.e. i dont need both, just one of them. when i connect it automatically defaults to my 'secondary' screen instead of my primary one. thanks for sharing any tips!

Ok I guess I give up. I've followed everything here. I've configured remote management in leopard, i've gone into the airport extreme and allowed apple remote desktop there with port 5900, i've tried putting every IP address i can find into the vnc app on the phone with the vnc password, no dice. So I guess if anybody has any luck with leopard and an iphone trying to get this stupid app to put your desktop on the phone, let me know. I shouldn't have to get a ******* network admin professional to do this, this is ridiculous.

I feel you dude, I'm having the same problem. I know how to forward my ports and yet I can't seem to get this program to connect over 3g, only wifi when connected to my network.

You're forwarding port 5900 to the internal ip of your machine, right?

You are trying to connect to your external ip, right?
