Holy flap-jacks your right!

I didn't realize that the 2.6ghz Core 2's they are putting in the Macbook Pro's were basically the "extreme" edition.

I am a long time PC user about ready to purchase my first Mac - a Macbook Pro actually.

I believe that the 15" MBP's are using the LED display now, however I heard via rumor that they will release the Penryn 45nm chips up to 2.8ghz in January.

I'd like the opinion of others if this is something worth waiting for or not? I have other computers so this isn't a necessity, however I can get a better corporate discount if I order it soon - I'm weighing the options.

Opinions? Thanks in advance!

It's all about need. If you need the computer now then buy, if not, then wait...simple.

Once the 2.4GHz MBPs came out, the 2.33GHz entered the Refurb store at $1899(a $600 reduction).

Why you'd pay full price now, I'll never know...

Im kinda wondering about this too... if the 2.4 will show up at 600 off as refurb?

Another thing Im wondering is if the current models will still be available for sale new for a few months while they make the transition to the updated book, so we can still choose the current version if we dont like the design of the new one???:apple::apple::apple:

All it takes is for ONE person to speculate, then people automatically think it is going to happen.

Where is the proof that MBP's with Penryn are going to be announced in Jan 08? This info has not come from Apple has it?!

Do people do this for PC's? do you walk into PC World and think hmm i am not going to buy the fastest machine here because in a couple of weeks time a new and better model will come out - you have to draw the line somewhere...

Then again, I wouldn't dream of spending £1,700 on a PC laptop - god knows how Apple has sucked me in for this one!

Uh, ok hostility LOL. This one person speculated (being me) because the 45nm (Penryn) IS the new notebook CPU that Intel IS producing and seeing as how Macs now use Intel's chips, they really don't have much of an alternative choice, do they?

Not to mention it's been plaguing the internet for months now, not only on Mac Rumors, but everywhere else.

I guess if nothing else posting this thread spurred me on to do more research. So in part I answered many of my own questions, but I received some outstanding advice and suggestions in the process. And I'm all about brainstorming.

Steve, I think the reason that Apple sucked you in for 1700pounds is because they have absolutely the best design, aesthetics and notebook hardware currently being made for the consumer market (without getting into semantics). Anyway, grats on your order!

I've made my decision as I stated above. I'll order the 15" 2.6ghz on Friday, with the 7200 rpm drive, and order the 4gb's of Patriot memory from Newegg.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah! That processor must just fly! I've got the X6800 in my rendering server and it is ultra speedy... this one is just below it in the charts, yet in a notebook!

Though I do believe the frontside bus on the MBP is 800 and the x6800 is typically in a 1066 or faster motherboard.

Echooche, Sorry, I think you have read my post the wrong way, I was not having a go at you at all - if it sounded like it, i'm sorry it was not my intention...

What I was trying to say was all it takes is for one rumour site to put something up and some people think that is gospel, I was trying to point out that yes maybe one day MBP's will have penryn, but when? we do not know. Would they run too hot for the MBP? who knows. After all that is why they held out on a G5 because it ran too hot. I have not read the specs of the chip, not really that bothered, but am saying apple will dictate when it will be. The rumours are holding out that they will be in the MacPro first.

I was tempted to hold out, but seeing as they are getting more replaced frequently now, how long do you hold out for, there is always a cycle and to be honest will you really push your Mac to the point where it cannot cope? I read somewhere than in the Q2 there will be an even better superduper one that runs like a bat out of hell, but cooler.

I was being sarcastic about the £1700 as I have NEVER spent this much money on a computer, I spent 1400 last year on a 24" iMac, which got replaced, but really was not that bothered as there was *not* really that much difference in design except made out of Al. The quality of the MBP to me at the moment is fantastic and yes you do pay more for design and the little extras like the keyboard lighting up and sensors et.

I bought a 2.4 160GB 5400 Glossy on Sunday, I have it here, but I cannot upgrade the HDD and no store will do it for me, hence why I have placed the order for the 2.6 and 250GB HDD Glossy, but to be honest I have put this one through it's paces and people forget this machine was top of the line, people paid a fortune for it.

I am returning the 2.4 within the 2 weeks, but I am just a sucker for a good deal.

I am just trying to say, you can wait and wait for something that you think is going to happen and your right probably will, but no one knows when it will be but assume it will be the next apple event, but I am sure there will be several early next year.

It is an expensive game keeping up with technology having the latest and greatest... I don't buy a computer thinking I can sell it down the line for a better price than another model. I buy a computer for it to do what I want quite happily.

Good luck! :)

I don't think Apple will grab Penryn until Montevina in Q2 08. There is no point in them grabbing the CPUs only to move to Montevina later.

I say that because they would have to slip in a chipset refresh. No one cares about that. It is much better if they get the new chips with the chipset, they can do it all at once. Besides, Penryn will benefit more from Montevina as opposed to being om Santa Rosa.

Hey thanks for the input guys, Steve, et. all.

I really do appreciate it. I think you all make a really valid point about the uncertainty of waiting. While i was monitoring the forum today I did that research i meantioned herein and the 2.6 is going to be plenty fast for my needs. It's true that trying to keep up with technology is a losing race, but the 2.6 should be just behind my custom built Zalman TNN-500AF machine and I think it should do just fine.

Anyway, thanks for the collaboration and bouncing ideas back and forth. More than anything now I am just excited to get a notebook that is designed so incredibly well. I know many will cringe when I say I'm buying it to put XP Pro onto it, but after 15 years on PC's professionally, I can ease into the Leopard OS.

The notebook I currently have is a 17" HP desktop replacement, and it weighs like 13lbs. It's hardly portable, so having something that's fast and functionally portable is going to be wonderful.

Thanks and take care everyone - I'm sure I'll be frequenting the boards more soon 8 ))

If you don't need it right now then wait for the next update, I however would buy now.

We get this same discussion all the time. "Wait or buy now?". And I always give the same answer.

I'd like the opinion of others if this is something worth waiting for or not? I have other computers so this isn't a necessity, however I can get a better corporate discount if I order it soon - I'm weighing the options.

Simple: If you need the new computer, go ahead and buy it. If you do not need it, don't buy it. you said that you do not need it, you have other computers. So why buy it?

What is the performance increase from a 2.6ghz Merom to a 2.6ghz Penryn? Like 8%? I'm just tring to decide wether to buy one now or wait but the availibility of the 2.6ghz MBP at online retailers is also weighing on my decision.

Well I'm waiting for new MBPs in January, and it's killing me

I'm waiting too. It's not killing me so much, but I'm looking forward to whatever :apple: has in store for January. Do I need the 8% approx improvement over the 2.4? Nope. But who knows what else might change besides the processor. If nothing much, I'll snap a newly discounted 2.4 for all my waiting pleasure.... :D

Ah but in my case, the improvement from Windoze to OS X...

I'm waiting too but in my case it is from a 2.4ghz Pentium 4 solo core Windows to OS X. Does anyone think there will be a possibility of a 2.8ghz processor in the high end model or that is BTO? I know that we will probably see the 2.6ghz Penryn as it is the same price point as the current high end models but I would really like to get 2.8ghz and a 7200 RPM HDD in one machine.

"Well, by now is seems pretty obvious that Apple isn't releasing anything huge before Christmas and Macworld. From what we've heard just about everything in the Macintosh lineup is scheduled to get a hit at Macworld (more on this to come soon). iPods are staying put for awhile and the iPhone won't see revision 2 until around May - in time to ship in Asia."

This is a quote from a recent story on 9 to 5 mac. Their comment on The macintosh lineup and Macworld leads me to believe that Macworld will be big for Apple. Really big. So my suggestion is wait guys. Steve will probably do something big and you will be kicking yourself for not showing a little patience.

why not wait longer than january

quad core is coming in Q2 2008. Im waiting till then for a macbook pro with hopefully 8700 M GT or 8800 series card in it. Once quad core hits your almost future proof until everything is solid state or you do rediculous programming and rendering with CS2. In that case a laptop wouldn't be for you either way.

Quad core won't hit laptops til late 2008. Intel's Montevina chipset will hit Q2 2008.

Hey guys in trying to decide wheather to buy a macbook or macbook pro 15.4 in but, I will only by next year. I am very new to the whole mac things so can you guys please let me know what the new versions for 2008 entail or hypothetically entail. I really like the mac book cuz it white but its too small of a screen and like the mac book pro screen size of 15.4 inches but the silver color is not one that i like. I will be using it for medical school. Please let me know your opnions and what you think I should do.

quad core is going to be labeled as a core 2 duo extreme strangely and will be released in early to late (mid) 2008. Latest being end of June. This is the start of the Montevina platfrom. Jan Macworld is the last of the Santa Rosa, but with a fresh start to 45nm(penryn). Apple is always the first to pick up chips to stay ahead of the competition so I wouldn't be suprised if they do the same. Only problem is Laptops will be somewhat hotter and these will only be true desktop replacement laptops for the time until small compression tubes "like coolant tubes" are released and more porous top decksare used where the keyboard can release heat upwards but prevent liquid from coming in. This is estimated within a year. I read the same in various articles though the authenticity of the chip being called a core 2 duo extreme would confuse buyers.

For what it is worth -- I was born back in the days where folks promised my generation would today have flying cars, personal jet packs, even hotels on the Moon and Mars. Well, of course none of that came true. As such, over the years I have come to realized not to bank much on future speculations.

In any event, if you want to buy a MacBook, then spec out the best system to suit your needs now, and buy it. Don't wait for a future that may never happen.

Well said. I'm with ya, Cmax! :)

Some of us aren't able to wait that long due to certain constraints, mine being productivity and time.

I have been waiting since June 5th. Hopefully this update will be god. I say if you need really badly, get it. If you can wait, wait and get the next best thing. I really think that the Penryn update will be godly (new features?). We will see.
