Can I ask why? The 10.5 iPad Pro is current, i can't imagine too much different that will result in an updated iPad. Will they even update the IPP this year?

I think they will move to an X style redesign. I feel like the feature set between the low cost iPad and the Pro are a little too close right now. I also think Apple wants to move quickly to adapt a similar design language across their high end devices. For me, I look forward to no home button, less bezel, more powerful processor, Face ID, and maybe screen enhancements as well. I sell and upgrade yearly and it costs me about $200. I wouldn't be terribly disappointed though if they didn't release something new though as I really like my 10.5.

Yup, waiting for the new Pro to replace my current 10.5. I upgrade my iPhone and iPad every year as they are my only computers and it is relatively cheap to do so.
Depends on the model. You lose the least money on lowest capacity Wi-Fi. You never get $1 for $1 on upgrades when reselling so those who purchase 512GB LTE get hit by depreciation harder.

It will have a bezelless bigger display and FaceID which dramatically changes the experience. The 10.5 will probably become 11.9 and 12.9 will become around 13.9.

I’m getting a little bit of upgrade fatigue. That FOMO feeling has been magnified lately because Apple seems to completely revamp their idea of what an iPad Pro is every year. Logically, I know that my 10.5” Pro is serving me well and will handle everything I need it to do for several years without ever upgrading.

Non-logically, I know that if they change the screen size this year, I’m going to feel left out if I don’t upgrade. It makes zero sense. I’m happily typing this on my iPad Pro that I love, yet at the same time, I know that fairly soon it’s not going to be a relevant screen size or feature set anymore.

On one hand, I love that Apple continues to move the product line forward. On the other hand, I resent them for yearly making me feel like I should have waited for THIS year instead of buying in last year.
FOMO is a part of Apple's marketing strategy to maximize revenue. Many think "planned obsolescence" is their primary tactic. It isn't. That's small potatoes compared to fear.

If you are able to break out of Apple's "sphere of fear", you'll be more content and have paid out less money for even greater enjoyment.

One way to help with that is to not take Apple's marketing hyperbole at face value. It's not that new features like ProMotion are worthless... it is that they are generally solutions in search of problems.

For example: The 1st gen 12.9 iPad Pro doesn't have ProMotion, but using it with iOS 9.1 (which it originally shipped with), scrolling and such were buttery smooth. NOBODY complained about lag. Even Pencil latency was fine. Yes, a few hardcore folks had mild criticism of it, but for the majority of users, it was absolutely fine.

Apple releases the 2nd gen 12.9 Pro and new 10.5 Pro with ProMotion, suddenly, thanks to the power of suggestion, every iPad without ProMotion suddenly became a stuttering hot mess. But looking at it objectively, in context, with a proper perspective, those non-ProMotion iPads are just fine.

Please note, I'm only suggesting this because it seems like you want to break that cycle. For others reading this that don't want to... rock on.

I have upgrade every iPad from the first with exception of iPad 4 which came out months after iPad 3. The last couple of years as prices jumped I waited a month or so after launch for price drops. Before that I always bought at launch.

My current collection consists of a 2017 256GB 12.9 WiFi+Cellular, a wifi 128GB Mini4 and an unopened wifi 64GB 10.5 I bought late last year because it was ridiculous price and couldn't resist. I can't see myself upgrading the 12.9 because I can't see what Apple could add a year out to make it worth doing so. But never say never.

I love the mini format but agree it's feeling a bit long in the tooth and no always-on Siri, which is important to me, but it's not enough to upgrade it to another 10.5. It's just something I keep in my HT for convenience. It was like $250 at one of BB's summer sales last year so worth what I paid for sure.

And then the 10.5, which I'm torn. I want to open it but if Apple pushes out a bezel-free model I'll mentally slit my wrists. So I keep it boxed ready to sell "in case." If Apple doesn't release a bezel-free model then I'll open it. Can't think of anything Apple could add that would be worth me spending hundreds more on. Other than the bezel the 10.5 is pretty perfect as-is and should be relevant for a few years to come. I really DO NOT look forward to Face ID on my iPads. It's fine on my iPhone but seems like it would be a PITA on the iPad. If the next 10.5 has more screen but also Face ID that would be a deal killer for me unless Apple managed to make it quicker and more reliable at typical iPad holding angles than it is on my X.

I do want to break out of it--I don't want to upgrade my iPad Pro this year. I'm not sure why I'm like this with my iPad, but back in the days of 2 year contracts, I never cared about it with my iPhones. And I'm still rocking a series 0 Apple Watch (which I definitely AM upgrading once there's a redesign). There's something about iPads that always makes me want to have the latest and greatest.

Lol, I disabled ProMotion on my Pro 12.9. None of my other devices had it and I didn't want those devices to feel laggy/stuttery. For me, the difference is apparent. However, it's not like the older iPads slowed down. They're just not as smooth as the newer Pros.

We used to have an iPad 3 that was kept on iOS 6 in our household. At the time I was using it, it was okay. Not blazing fast, of course, but neither did it feel unbearably slow. But then I got used to iPad Pro 9.7 speed so whenever I needed to do something for my mom on the iPad 3 (still on iOS 6, mind), it felt super, super slow. We actually do still have some Pentium II and IIIs running Windows 95/98 for some specialized equipment at work. Those feel positively Jurassic now but I remember when I was a kid being impressed by PII/PIII performance. Granted, my first exposure to computers was 386 with RAM in the KBs running DOS on floppy disks.

Yea I am not worried about that, can only speak for myself. 64GB is plenty for me as I use the cloud for all my files. I spend about $200 a year to upgrade my iPad.

Apple Watch Series 0 and original 12.9 iPadPro. I’ll get a new Watch first then a new iPP sometime this year (year 3 and now out of AppleCare but was replaced with a "new" one in January, just before my warranty expired because of battery failure.)

I’m expecting to get another 12.9 but I’m open . . . The one I have now is the best thing I ever did for my productivity.

It has been said many times before and it's worth repeating again -- if you need it, but it. If you can wait, wait.

I just purchased the 10.5 Pro in December and love it. It has replaced a MacBook for traveling and work outside of the office. It's a great device.

Same. I'm 99% sure there's a redesign coming for the Apple Watch this year. I absolutely love my series 0 Apple Watch and have never gone a day without it since launch day, but have been holding out on upgrading until there's a redesign. That is WAY higher on my priority list than getting a new iPad this year. I weighed 260 lbs. when I got the Apple Watch, and now I'm consistently in the 180s--you could say it's probably the most important device I've ever owned. It probably saved my life.

I mentioned in another thread that I'd be open to generation 2 FaceID on an iPad, but not generation 1, especially since I keep them 3-4 years. I might be forced to swing by Microcenter and pick up a cheapie 10.5.

the ipad pro can handle any app that will come out for at least the next couple years. Am not aware of any apps that use all the performance.

I've been having issues with my 10.5" Pro and battery drain in standby. I took it to Apple 2 weeks ago and they couldn't figure out what was wrong either and replaced it for me. Now it's having the same problem again--just started in the last couple of days. The only way I can stop it from happening is to put the iPad in Airplane Mode while I'm not using it.

(Here's all the stuff I tried to do to fix it on the original: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-pro-10-5-battery-drain-in-standby.2109936/)

Maybe this is a sign from the gods that I need to sell it now, cut my losses and start fresh with a new model later this year (hopefully).

I know many will disagree with me, but I'm convinced that your battery drain issue is iOS 11.x related. Before updating my 12.9 Pro, I was getting insane battery life. As soon as I installed iOS 11, battery life tanked and never recovered. All of the usual (and unusual) tips and tricks to resolve it didn't improve things. Battery life on my Mini 4 (still on 10.x) is every bit as good as it was when I first bought it.

That's the only thing I can think of that's left to blame. I'm not sure if you read the other post I linked, but I have tried EVERYTHING to get this thing to stop draining in standby, including setting it up as brand new from a DFU restore and not putting any apps at all on it. Eventually it returns to its old ways every time. It's either iOS 11 itself or an app that I just haven't been able to single out yet. But putting it in Airplane Mode does stop the problem. Unfortunately, that's not something I should have to think to do every time I put the iPad down.

Does yours drain in standby too? The worst I ever saw was like 20% overnight, which is ridiculous. Right now it's usually about 5% overnight even if I close down all apps in the background.

Yes, I think I did read about your experiences in that other thread. And yes, mine does drain in standby too... even after resetting it and setting it up as new and not installing any apps.

Ugh--ok, maybe I'll just stick it out then.

after playing with both 10.5 and 12.9 I realized that 10.5 is a bit small (compared to his big brother) and 12.9 is kind of too big. I think Apple won't change the chassis of the iPads and just shrink the bezels and hopefully upgrade the screen size from 10.5 -> 11' something. then that alone could actually attract new people as well as previous Pro owners.
I know that 10.5 is a nice size but ... darn they put them side by side with 12.9 and you immediately see 10.5 pretty small...

That's the exact same experience I had on iOS 11 when I upgraded to it last year. My pro 12.9 despite being Apple's latest tablet still had a drop of 40-50% in battery life. It used to last 4-5 days easily on iOS 10 and barely 2days on iOS 11. I downgraded to 10 and the problem was resolved.

The tablet features on iOS 11 are nice but not worth the drop in performance and battery life to me. It also causes more expenses as more frequent charging means battery health will deteriorate faster on iOS 11 which means an earlier battery replacement.

My ideal iPad would be the 12.9" with shrunken bezels like iPhone X, decreasing the total size while maintaining the screen size.

What Will take to make me ditch my 2016 9.7” Pro

#1. 8 Core A11X With HMP
#2. FaceID with No weird bezel intrusion into the display
#3. Touch ID built into the display
#4. 6GB RAM
#5. QLED levels of Color Gamut if it’s Not OLED
#6. Support for Apple Pencil 2
#7. Improved Quad Speakers.
#8. 802.11 AC full support 3x3 antenna

I have a 12.9 and am in the same boat, mainly because of the proccesor alone look at the gains the A11 made for iPhone. Now imagine what the A11X will do. This could also be the first iPad with more ram, based off the direction iOS and MacOS is going 4gb ram isn’t going be suitable for much longer for a “Pro” level iPad Pro. Personally if they don’t add ram I won’t bother upgrading as that is going to be a bottleneck long before the A10X or A11X would be.
