I have a 12.9 and am in the same boat, mainly because of the proccesor alone look at the gains the A11 made for iPhone. Now imagine what the A11X will do. This could also be the first iPad with more ram, based off the direction iOS and MacOS is going 4gb ram isn’t going be suitable for much longer for a “Pro” level iPad Pro. Personally if they don’t add ram I won’t bother upgrading as that is going to be a bottleneck long before the A10X or A11X would be.

iOS can’t start requiring more than 4GN - there are far too many devices in the market with way less ram. I don’t want iOS to suddenly run away with ram requirements - keep it lean. 4GB should be fine for a while yet

Then they need to improve ram management, if you compare an iPad Pro to a MacBook with 4gb of ram the Mac holds things static while iOS is very liberal about pushing things out of memory. A minor annoyance that disrupts workflows.

MacOS has storage-backed virtual memory. iOS does not. Personally, I think they'll need to improve random read/write and make 128GB base storage first before they make that change.

Really though, would be nicer if they'd just up the RAM for improved multitasking. I find iOS 11 is already less efficient at memory management than iOS 10. Either that or it's just more aggressive at ejecting background apps and browser tabs.

My point exactly either back up the storage with virtual memory or improve management of iOS. If neither then they need to give us more ram, even with good ram management more ram is sorta inevitable, if WWDC makes a push for pro apps those apps are going to want 4+gbs sooner rather then later, sorta why I think the next Pro will have more ram.

What do people think about a new Pencil coming with the new iPP this year? I’m hopeful given that it could be one more distinguishing factor between iPad 2018 and the iPP, which both support the Pencil.

Rumored features that show up on several sites:

  • W1 or W2 chip connectivity. Easy pairing like the AirPods would be nice.
  • Eraser funtionality on the end.
  • Wireless charging with iPP, perhaps by magnetically attaching to iPP.
  • Haptics.
  • Gestures to activate certain actions.
  • Smaller size.
  • Overall even better latency/accuracy/pressure sensitivity.
  • Multiple nib options for increased friction with glass surface.
Personally, I hope the W1 connectivity, wireless charging, and smaller body size become reality. The Pencil is a bit too tall and thick. Being closer to actual pencil size would be ideal :)

No idea what the chances are but I hope so.
My biggest gripe with the Pencil is that there isn’t enough friction and therefore control when drawing or writing. A matte screen protector helps but what would really do the job is different tip options, as you suggested.
Second biggest gripe is that there’s no off switch. I have to always remember to turn off Bluetooth on my iPP or else the pencil battery drains out while it’s being carried around in my bag. Then I have to re-pair the pencil each time. This gets annoying, and sometimes I forget to turn off Bluetooth and it’s not convenient to pull out my iPad just to turn off the pencil.
I also wish the pencil could do screen edge gestures (Notification Center and multitasking/control center). When skin oils build up on the screen it interferes with my drawing, so I prefer using the pencil for navigation especially while I’m drawing.
Magnetic charging might work, but it probably wouldn’t be able to quick charge that way. I would just like some way to plug it into the iPad lightning port without fearing it’s going to break. At the very leas I’d take some kind of “L” adapter.
I would like the pencil to be shorter but I would rather it be fatter than skinnier. The pencil has some heft to it and at that weight I find thicker easier to hold than thinner.
And I would like a programmable side button.

It’s interesting because it sounds from people’s complaints like the Pencil is more annoying when you don’t use it frequently than when you do use it frequently. I use it several hours a day, so I never really get to a point where it is in a bag draining without my thinking about it. Instead, I eventually get a message to charge it, typically while I am in front of my iPad, and it charges up pretty quickly, or else I just do it at the end of the day, so it doesn’t feel like a big deal for something I use so much.

I'm kinda on the fence with this upgrade cycle, actually. I literally *just* bought a 12.9" iPad Pro 2nd gen as a replacement for my Pro 9.7" and am contemplating returning the thing -- mostly due to a defect with the screen, but now more so for the anticipated refresh at WWDC this year. It kinda sucks, because I would like to have the larger size iPad for school this summer (i.e., now), but would like to have a device which I *know* will be supported for several years. Granted, the A10X is no slouch based on my time with the 2nd gen, but with the rumored A11X on the horizon... I'm not sure what to do. I could just keep this iPad and sell it before WWDC, but I'm not sure how much of a hassle that'll be. ugh.

With so much up in the air, it's really difficult to make a decision.

I'm betting Apple may go the route of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X: sell a current design model + the rumored bezel-less design model and put the A11X in both. Maybe call one iPad Pro and the other iPad X? I don't know.

Guess all I can do is wait and see.

I just bought a 2nd gen 12.9 too. Only hesitancy is if Apple do something dramatic like significantly shrink the bezels and overall weight, which could heavily affect resale value of the current ones. I’ll just try and keep an eye on rumours and if they start forming up more I’ll look to sell in advance
I assume they can’t push the prices higher - they were already too high for 1st gen

Like I said, the A10X is no slouch, so I feel like you'll be ok either way.

If I ultimately decide to keep mine, the only qualm I have is that -- based on previous experience -- iPads seem hard to sell. Perhaps that's changed given the public's resurging interest in iPads, but if I have to go through the trouble to sell it, I may as well keep it and upgrade again in 2020. By that time, Apple will probably introduce iPad Pros w/ OLED displays.

Decision decisions, eh?

I’ve never had any trouble selling an iPad. I’ve used Swappa, eBay, and even social media to put them up on sale and they’re always gone within hours.

hm. in that case, i think i'll keep the 12.9. I guess I'll return it to the store tomorrow since there's a screen defect and then buy directly from Apple to get better support out of the gate.

It isn't like I'm married to this thing for life anyway, so whatever. i'll enjoy it and if i *really* want to upgrade, I at least have the option later.

Do you absolutely need to have it now or can you make do with something else? It’s 2 months. All signs point to a pretty dramatic change. I agree with you on the iPhone 8 / X strategy but If you can wait, wait.

Yep you’re right, if I used it every day (or if I didn’t carry it in my bag) it wouldn’t be as much of an issue, or maybe not at all. But I tend to use it very sporadically—sometimes a week of heavy use, sometimes a week without any use. The unpredictability of my usage makes it difficult.

Well, I returned the iPad and the keyboard back to Fry's. As much as I really would like to buy another one directly from Apple, you guys are right. It would benefit me to wait. Plus, I should be starting classes by the time the new one comes out.

Good move. iPads usually aren’t backordered like the phones. If it’s announced and available immediately, it should be in your hands the same day

I bought the iPP 10.5" 256GB WiFi, via price match from Staples. Great bargain and sure I can sell it for more than I paid if the newer models are enticing enough. Coming from a 2nd generation iPad, the 2017 Pro model blows it away completely.

Or fall..

Base on this forum, apples sales would only ever be for 6 months of the year and the rest of the year would be people slowly getting blue balls waiting for something new to maybe come out. iPads are too unpredictable regarding release cadence

I disagree but laughed at the blue balls comment. Nice one! :)

We don’t really know BUT logically the fall is overloaded with 3 new iPhones this year and a possible redesign of the watch. Makes sense to put something in at WWDC and what’s left? Mac mini? Yeah when my grandkids need a machine. (I don’t even have a kid btw that’s the point)

Second, the new “cheap” iPad with pencil support may almost be too successful. What’s the incentive now to move up to a pro ? 9.7 to 10.3 isn’t that huge. A bezelless design , 11.5 inch screen in the same or slightly larger chassis gives a clear distinction and upgrade path.

I’m not sure there’ll be 2 redesigns. Again, opinion, give the 10.3 the X treatment and the 12.9 upgrades intervals with a new 12.9 design next spring. 14” screen in the same chassis?

Same here! I have to buy an 2018 iPad 128GB Wifi for school (530 euros with Apple Pencil) before May. I would love it if I can pay for the same amount for iPad Pro 10.5 Wifi, same disk space, without Pencil.

At the moment, 64GB 10.5 iPad Pro Wifi costs about 739 euros retail, excluding the Apple Pencil.

Basic iPad Pro should have a minimum of 128GB.

As long as one is not picky about configuration. Last year, I remember the 512GB Pro 12.9 LTE being backordered for weeks.

With this in mind, I guess I'll be clinging to the Apple Store app the day of the presentation. :p

I wonder what I'll do if it turns out no iPad is announced at WWDC. In this case, it'd be for sure they'd be announced in September, so I'd probably end up buying a 2nd gen and sell a few weeks before that event. At least then there'd be no hesitation in buying the 2nd gen.

It’s actually 10.5 to be specific, and I found it to be a noticeable change from 9.7”, especially as far as typing space both on the screen and on the ASK. This is why I think they’ll raise the screen size another half inch or so in the same chassis rather than shrink the chassis to the 10.5” screen. Better typing experience was one of the big benefits they listed last year for going up to 10.5.

Probably my dream machine then. I'm trying to switch my workflow from a laptop to an iPad Pro with a desktop for the home office. The 12.9 was too big, 10.5 too small. The 11" size has always been my favorite. The MBA 11 was brilliant in terms of size and footprint. I carried around a 17" MBP for 6 years and loved it to death but now ... for a mobile device 11" is the sweet spot.
