Walmart: Give us access to your bank account and then you can fail to load the barcode in the Walmart app because the building is a farady cage. That's so much easier than tap to pay!
This. There is nothing more frustrating than having a cart load of groceries and not being able to pay as their in-store wifi sucks and there is zero cell signal. I have had to tell the person working at self checkout, "watch my stuff, I have to go outside for a second to load your ass backwards qr code" I now don't shop at Walmart, and i am about to ditch Fry's and go to Safeway for the same reason. Good job losing customers. Thank you Safeway and Target for accepting Apple Pay. I also would be willing to bet, the customers that want/use Apple Pay are people that spend more $ on average. So good job losing us all. Ugh.

I wonder who had Scan & Go first, Walmart or Amazon’s Whole Foods. I used it in Whole Foods a couple times. Works well.

Walmart's Sam's Club division has had Scan & Go for several years now. It's more recent in the Walmart stores.

I member of a non-profit and we have a wine event every year. I am shocked at the number of pepole that don't carry an ID with them. None of them are happy when we tell them no ID means you can't come in.
Yet another example of why it's wise to carry an ID . . . and cash to tip the bartender.

On my side of town Kroger started taking Apple pay last year and I started going there more than anyplace. One close to the house I pass on my way home. Many office days I go to the gym after work which means my Wallet/Phone is in a gym bag in the back of the car. It's nice to run and grab something and check out with my watch on my way home and not have to go home first (Digging in the back of the car for personal belongings is a great way to have your car jacked in a parking lot).

When I pull out my AMEX to pay at a restaurant or some other businesses, and they say they don't take AMEX, I simply give them my Mastercard, and life goes on. Why get all huffy with the clerk or leave your cart and storm out in protest? That would be as petulant and pointless as yelling at the Costco pump because it won't take your AMEX or Mastercard.

@AbSoluTc, your elitism is showing and it is plainly incorrect.

Pretty tough to shoplift at an Apple Store

You would be hard pressed to just grab something and walk out

And any Apple device they could just track it anyway
As a former Apple Genius, it’s done more than you realize. I wasn’t talking about any of the computers/hardware itself though.

We had a repeat offender come and still boatloads of Nike Fuel bands back in the day. He’d come in and get a batch at a time.

I stand corrected

I'm very curious about this one?
An example is https://www.pensacolalighthouse.org/page/visit: "All U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals 18 and older must have a valid government-issued identification card."

There are other government places where you don't need an ID card to enter, but having one will get you a discount, such as national parks: "The NPS also offers current U.S. military members and their dependents a cost-free military pass. Those who qualify can present their ID cards (Department of Defense, Veteran Health, or Veteran) or show the veterans designation on their state-issued ID, or get a pass online (with a $10 processing fee)." - https://www.cntraveler.com/story/free-entry-to-national-parks-and-state-parks

Oh ok. No one else pays interchange fees? You know it and I know it. It's about tracking people. They have cameras all over their stores. Not just in the ceiling looking for shop lifters. They look at how customers interact with products. They monitor what you look it. They watch what you buy. They analyze your behavior in the door. And they track your purchases by credit card number.

Everyone pays interchange fees but few businesses pay as much as Walmart does. Their huge scale means they have huge incentive to reduce transaction costs. I mean, if they can even make transaction fees 10% cheaper it would save them hundreds of millions of dollars!

Whether you use a contactless card to pay doesn’t make any difference to the store’s ability to track your purchases.

Even Apple Pay doesn’t protect you from tracking as the Device Account Number (DAN) doesn’t change between purchases. You can generate a new DAN by removing and re-adding a card to Apple Pay, but most people aren’t going to bother with that.

If anyone at Walmart's VP level or above had an ounce of common sense, they could still take contactless payments, and also track an individual's shopping habits.

Once again, Walmart pay is not really about tracking, it’s about avoiding interchange fees. As you point out, using contactless or Apple Pay does not really affect businesses’ ability to keep track of your purchases.

The reason you see Walmart (and all other businesses) happily accepting contactless payments in Canada and Europe is because the interchange fees are much lower there.

It looks like Walmart employees in USA will have to deal with complaints from customers on Apple Pay and other NFC contactless payments everyday in Walmart stores in USA for many years to come from this corporate decision.

This is because Walmart is the last major retailer holdout in USA for to accept Apple Pay and other NFC contactless payments while other major retailers in USA accept Apple Pay and other NFC contactless payments except Walmart.

I have a technical question around it: In Europe it does not matter if a company specifically accepts Apple Pay or not. It will work as long as they accept contactless payment (i.e. holding your physical credit card close to the terminal instead of your phone). Is that not the case in the U.S. / at Wallmart?

I am reading the Wallmart statement like they ban all forms of contactless payment but am confused of why the article itself mainly speaks about Apple Pay rather than contactless payments in general.
Because, this is an Apple centric site. Essentially, if you accept contactless payments, you accept Apple/Samsung pay. Walmart says nope. I’m sure they have their reasons, and I’m sure it’s all bs

I feel your explanation still leaves some ambiguity.

It has nothing to do with mobile phones

If a terminal accept contactless payment then you can tap your debit or credit card

all Samsung/Apple Pay do is put a copy of your debit/credit card in to your phone

I hope this is written by AI…
