Can someone explain to me as a non-american, why customers don't just talk with their wallets and either NOT scan or shop elsewhere? OBVIOUSLY it's to collect data, that's what businesses do.

Clearly a lot of their customers are using the scan and pay,..otherwise Walmart would shut it down. Stop using it people!

If walmart was an insect, it would be a roach. It pushes out all other businesses and makes itself the only one (in some areas). It also seems to attract the trashiest of people. People that don't have a lot of money to begin with. Also location, many locations where walmart resides are low income areas. Low income areas, don't have well educated people.

So there you go. People don't know, don't have a choice or don't care.

Walmart doesn't accept any contactless payments.
Thanks for the clarification.
Whow. In Europe something like this is unimaginable for wholesale markets. Paying with the AppleWatch works everywhere. US sometimes orders strange paths.
On the other hand, the banks here do not allow AppleCard. So there's nice consumer harassment for us all over the world, often thought up by a few clowns.

Man, I still think Samsung's original Pay that would work with ANY magnetic card reader was the coolest thing ever. Kinda bummed they got rid of that, but I do understand that now almost everywhere has an NFC reader. People would be sooooo confused how I could get my S7 to work with ANY card reader.

I would never trust any scan & go payment option from Walmart. They treat people like criminals by the time they enter the parking lot who know what could happen if their own system doesn’t work. There is too much risk in trusting them not to take undeserved / unnecessary actions against innocent people just trying to shop. It’s not worth the trouble or risk.

Walmart still does not accept Apple Pay or other NFC payments at its more than 4,600 stores across the U.S., and it stood firm on its reasoning for that today.

Apple-Pay-Walmart-Feature.jpg

A spokesperson for Walmart today informed MacRumors that its position on contactless payments has not changed since we last reached out about the matter in 2022. The big-box retailer said it remains focused on its own convenient payment technologies available in the Walmart app, including Walmart Pay and Mobile Scan & Go.

Walmart Pay allows customers to scan a QR code displayed at checkout to pay for their purchase with a payment card stored in the Walmart app. Scan & Go allows Walmart+ members to save time by scanning barcodes on items while they shop, rather than having to scan all of the items at a self-checkout register later.

The spokesperson said the following statement still stands:

Apple Pay launched more than 10 years ago, and it was accepted at more than 90 percent of U.S. retailers as of 2022, according to Apple. Some other major Apple Pay holdouts in the U.S. have reversed course and started accepting it over the past few years, including The Home Depot, Lowe's, Kroger, and Texas grocery store chain H-E-B, leaving Walmart as one of the country's only major retailers not to accept Apple Pay.

Walmart has accepted Apple Pay in Canada since 2020.

I feel sorry for the Walmart employees in USA that will now have to deal many customers complaints of Apple Pay and other NFC contactless payments for many years to come as the last major retailer holdout for Apple Pay and other NFC contactless payments in USA.

Most customers of Walmart stores of USA do not know about Walmart Pay in Walmart app in USA.

I'll go to Walmart if I'm buying groceries and other things that only Walmart sells. It saves an extra stop.

Otherwise I just go to an actual grocery store. Luckily all grocery stores around me support Apple Pay.

Sidenote... I ordered something from Amazon and it showed up at my door in 2 hours. Wow! Of course not everything is available same-day... but it sure is nice!

:p

I have sold my WMT shares. They were very OK, but I don't want to accompany such unpleasant, snooty companies. There are better.

You can link your debit or credit card in its app for payment.
When you use the self checkout register, you can also log into your account with your telephone and pay for your stuff via the linked account.
Walmart also better tracks your purchase history.
Walmart doesn't offer contactless (tapping) payment. You can't tap your debit/credit card to the card reader but must insert or slide the card to pay.
"Linked account" meaning the debit or credit card, right? So I'm not sure why the posts I responded to were seeming to imply that you couldn't use credit card or were even discouraged from using it.

I will just keep going to HEB, Academy and Target 🎯 for Apple Pay if Walmart wanna be stuck in the past.

I do think they will eventually give in though.

It's weird that they accept ApplePay in Canada but not in the US. Yet one more reason to move north! :D I avoid shopping at Walmart. There are plenty of alternatives where I can pay with my phone.

The Walmart stores in Mexico also do not accept Apple Pay and other NFC contactless payments.

Why do you think there are so many differences in the world? Who is responsible for such different decisions? Governments? Narcissistic monarchs? These ideas don't just fall from the sky...

Unsure why this is anything specific to do with Apple, their stores do not take contact less at all, so your forced to use mag swipe or chip+stupid sign (not chip and pin lol, another stupid idioticy in USA just so the payment processor can charge for the sign pad) they purposely disabled there NFC on all their card machines that do support it

places that don't support contactless it it's because there payment processor they are using is trying to charge NFC payments as an additional feature fee when the machine already supports it in last 12-15 years

I do most of my grocery shopping at the little Neighborhood Walmart and a lot less at Albertsons since those are the only two real grocery retailers in town. Neither accept AP nor do most other merchants around here. Guess that is a downside to living in small town USA. But at least they all take plastic so I get my 2% cash back rewards on everything. As much as I hate their Mega Stores and avoid them at all costs, the Neighborhood store is by far the easiest in and out of any place in town.

What type of card readers are those other merchants using?

Magstripe only?

You can add (link) a debit card or credit cards (Visa, MC, Discover, AMEX), gift card, 'Pay by Bank', EBT (SNAP), Paypal & Onepay in the Walmart app or online at Walmart's website's User login under the Account's Settings.

You'll notice that Walmart is not viewed very positively by many people.
Walmart stores serves a purpose for serving the surrounding communities where there are no other stores. There are some Super Walmarts that sell grocery items.
It's not the best but it's not that bad.
The Auto Center, if available, is great for affordable oil changes and tire service like rotations/balancing but it's backed up due to difficulty finding mechanics.

Walmart needs to hire workers as the checkout lanes are almost empty (for example... 14 lanes but only 1 lane is open) while the Self Checkout section is packed, sometimes with some closed registers. Door greeters are not needed.

I use WalmartPay begrudgingly. I would prefer to use Apple Pay, but w/e. It is annoying that Walmart lies about why NFC payments aren’t allowed though.

Just be honest that you want to track your customers.

Walmart's excuses for why they don't accept Apple Pay ring extremely hollow as they do accept it in Canada, so what's so different about the U.S. market?

The US market is much more corrupt.

The people who run Walmart stores in USA want their Walmart employees to have to deal with more stress and less pay.

By not doing contactless payments, expect more and more stress for Walmart employees in USA from customer complaints as times goes in order to promote Walmart Pay.

What a backwards company, and how the hell is using an app and scanning a QR code more convenient?, that's a hell of a lot more steps than just pressing the power button.

Glad I'm in the UK when it comes to contactless, as pretty much every shop accepts it these days with extremely few that don't.

Thankfully here in the UK there aren't many places that doesn't accept contactless anymore. Ignoring Turkish barbers and Chinese takeaways.... they like cash..... for reasons.... 👀
We all pay enough taxes, paying your share only for the government to irresponsibly spend it like it’s going out of fashion without any fiscal restrain is the bigger problem. Governments have lost its requirement for accountability now you know the reason why some business’ only accept cash.

Seen from Europe, it saddens me that the USA cannot regulate itself for the better in this case. Shopping can't be that complicated.
