With how much self-checkout theft Walmart has to combat, I don't really blame them. It's an inconvenience, but so are the higher prices that we all have to pay as a result of shoplifters.
The challenge is that the "pay me then prove you paid me" policy only annoys those who pay for their items. That policy will drive paying customers elsewhere, leaving only shoplifters walking out the door with product.

You'll be lucky to find a live cashier as there's hardly any cashiers. Walmart has increased the self checkout areas and many, if not all, of the machines don't take cash.
Not taking cash is annoying. I almost never swipe my debit card, so I either use cash or a contactless payment pretty much everywhere. I had Walmart Pay set up for a while, but after finding out about their very shady reputation for privacy on the service, I've since stopped using it.

Walmart is now one of the only places where I pretty much have no choice but to swipe an actual physical debit card.

Kroger/King Soopers doesn’t support Apple Pay (or any form of NFC payment, including three ability to just tap your card - you have to insert it) either; instead doing something very similar to Walmart with requiring you to download the King Soopers (or Kroger) app and scan a QR code at checkout.

While it works, it is significantly more clunky than an Apple Pay. Instead of just double tapping the power button on my iPhone or Watch, I need to open up the King Soopers app, navigate to the QR code, as there is no way to have the app open to the QR code, and then scan the QR code in there optical scanner which is finicky at best. At that point, it’s just easier to insert my credit card

King Soopers is basically the only place I shop that doesn’t accept NFC payment. It is quite annoying.

You can, I won't. I don't see Tim Cook offering to buy my groceries.
I mostly do, because Walmart is making it harder to do business with them. Not contactless payments including the chip on my CC. I go there once every 3 - 6 months. It’s not about the money, it’s about collecting data to track you including storing cc information. Target was doing the same until that massive breach exposed cc data for 41 million
Of the customers. Yep. Over 10 percent of US citizens had their cc data exposed because they refused to adopt Apple’s more secure model. Because they are a tier up from Walmart they likely have more Apple users by percentage. A good number of those would have been
Mitigated, because they wouldn’t have the information in the first place.

After the breach and the class action lawsuit, they saw the value of Apple Pay and now take it.

This is how I work around this: added my Apple Card as a payment method and then on checkout you scan the qr code with their app and it washes thru my Apple Card. Yes I only get 1% cash back but it works. Also works for sams club as well and works for their gas.

Who cares? So you have to pull out a card. Wow, we’re definitely getting lazy as a society. The movie Wall-E is starting to make more sense.

Plus if I quit going to Walmart, where will I do all my people watching? The mall?

👊😬👍

Not for nothing, but that "not caring" and "lack of laziness" at stores is what got my father-in-law put on the shelf with long COVID, and needing nebulizer treatments for the rest of his life, while previously he was able to travel around the country, doing power plant startups.

I'll take my better chances being "lazy."

Walmart is the largest retailer in the world. Making their shoppers used Walmart Pay is how they get data about their purchasing behavior and stay competitive with Amazon (which also doesn’t accept Apple Pay). When you’re a behemoth, you can get away with not always pleasing your customers. The good news is that if you want to use Apple Pay, there are still some retailer alternatives depending on the category you shop. For pets, Chewy is amazing! And they take Apple Pay.

I guess from a Canadian point of view, I don’t understand how a company could control the access to NFC terminal. From my experience, any terminal that supports NFC will work with Apple Pay. It’s been a while since I’ve been in a Walmart, but I am pretty sure it works there as well in Canada
It’s true that a terminal that supports contactless payments will take Apple Pay. But what happens with Walmart and other retailers (mostly US retailers) is that they just disable contactless (NFC) payments altogether. Instead, you have to have your credit or debit card on you, and insert into the chip reader, or use Walmart Pay if you wanted to use your phone (or use cash or gift card).

It’s annoying, but then again the Magsafe Wallet is so slim and convenient and you need to have your ID to drive any way so no real harm to have a credit card or debit alongside your license.

I’m very sorry to hear that about your father in law. 🙏 I had COPD and Emphysema for years leading to a double lung transplant in 2016. So I’ve been through it all as far as that goes. And now am still high risk, of everything.

But I’m not quite sure if you’re a saying he got COVID from being forced to use his card vs having the option for Apple Pay instead.

If that’s the case and he was that high of risk, should’ve he been out in crowds like that to begin with?

Just trying to understand. Something I’m losing in translation.
