They do support it, walmart uses verifone mx925 pinpads like everyone else. Walmart just refuses to turn it on. They even went out of their way to block Samsung Pay’s MST which used the magnetic stripe readers.
When did they block the Samsung pay thing. I had a friend that used to use it at Walmart. It’s kind of moot now because Samsung abandoned the technology.

Meh. Walmart is just so lowbrow anyway. If I fancy a fix of toothless hillbillies wearing clothing ten sizes too small for them I'll watch Hee-Haw or go to peopleofwalmart.com
Walmart isn’t that bad. I guess it depends on what Walmart you go to. It’s not as nice and clean as Target though.

It’s not just poor people that shop there because even people with money want to save money. People are willing to go to a substandard store and deal with poor customer service if they can get the item slightly cheaper. If it’s the same thing, but cheaper people will deal with all kinds of misery just to get that item and save money.

A quick search on Twitter reveals that Walmart faces numerous requests to accept Apple Pay on a daily basis, but the big-box retailer still does not accept the iPhone's tap-to-pay service at its over 4,700 stores across the United States.

Walmart has instead committed to its own payments service called Walmart Pay, available through the Walmart app on the iPhone. Instead of using NFC technology like Apple Pay and many other mobile wallets, Walmart Pay allows customers to scan a QR code displayed at checkout to pay for their purchase with a payment card stored in the app.

"We do not accept NFC and instead have implemented convenient solutions, such as Walmart Pay, that provide our customers easy, touchless payments on any smartphone," a Walmart spokesperson told MacRumors this week. "We have also invested in innovative technologies that go beyond payments, such as Scan & Go, which allow Sam's Club and Walmart+ members to bypass the checkout altogether."

There are certainly some benefits for Walmart in pushing its own mobile payments service, including getting more customers to download the Walmart app, being able to track a customer's purchase history, and avoiding Apple Pay fees, but it's clear that Walmart is ignoring one of its customers' most frequent requests as a result.

Apple Pay launched just over eight years ago, on October 20, 2014. In a press release earlier this year, Apple said that Apple Pay is accepted at more than 90 percent of U.S. retailers, with some major holdouts including Walmart, The Home Depot, Lowe's, and Kroger. Walmart did start accepting Apple Pay in Canada in late 2020.

Lack of Apple Pay and the presence of Walmart shoppers is why I avoid Walmart. They're my stop of last resort.

They don't have to. Their customers are so devoted to them that they really don't care. Plus how many would have an Apple device that would support Apple Pay anyway? *shrug*

EDIT: Or understand it or even trust it. I didn't go to Apple Pay right away, but really like it for where it works. I *do* wish it was everywhere, but *shrug* I wouldn't necessarily boycott a business that didn't use it, but if such a business was say a mile the other side of a business that didn't, and the prices were close, I *might* choose that business over the closer one. Target supports Apple Pay, and I have seen some of their POS systems, and am GLAD I don't have to touch them.

I’d say lots of walmart customers might have an iphone, considering that in the US over 50% of the population uses iphone, and also that the current generation of iphones, just released, is the 10th iteration to support Apple Pay. Furthermore, lots of people in the US finance their iphones interest free for 24 months, which makes it much less of a luxury than in other countries.

Very true. It's just rather sad the slack-jawed Yokels get the press/infamy.

I'm reminded if a Jeff Foxworthy quote "And you know the thing is, Southerners are as smart as anybody in this country. Our only problem is we just can't keep the most ignorant amongst us off the television."

Walmart Pay is horrible. Just the other day their self checkouts took my money, but would show that it wasn't paid. It kept saying "use different tender". My bank account even showed the amount was charged.
It's happened to me several times. Nothing was done about it, I had to use a physical card and get charged multiple times until their system refunded the error charges.
They need to fix their issues before boasting comments of "innovative technologies & easy payment".

I guess just like Apple not willing to adopt RCS? 😆
Walmart does what it does because it can, and it's not stopping people from shopping at Walmart.

Difference is there are not many iPhone users demanding RCS support. That's largely a complaint of people not using iPhones...not much incentive to do what they want. I mean, as an iPhone user, why would I care about RCS? That's a problem for Android users, not me.

On the other hand, it's people who shop at Walmart that are asking them for Apple Pay... not people who only shop at Target.

the elistists of macrumors trashing walmart. Typical of apple lovers

Trashing Walmart? Not necessarily. This happened at my local Walmart.

A Walmart employee developing pictures, followed state law after seeing that the developed pictures depicted child abuse, and reported that abuse to the police. The parents were subsequently arrested for said child abuse.

Walmart fired the employee for reporting the child abuse.

If keeping my own morals and values, especially regarding such actions is what you'd call "elitist", I'll definitely wear that with pride.

How about boycott Walmart permanently. Such a terrible company.

It's impossible in many parts of the US. I was on a documentary shoot that had us staying in De Queen, Arkansas for 5 months a couple years back and the literal only place you could shop was Wal Mart unless you drove an hour and change one way to Texarkana. There's a lot of places like this out there.

I guess from a Canadian point of view, I don’t understand how a company could control the access to NFC terminal. From my experience, any terminal that supports NFC will work with Apple Pay. It’s been a while since I’ve been in a Walmart, but I am pretty sure it works there as well in Canada

The manufaturers of the terminal still leave the option to turn contactless off. Many retailers in the US and Mexico turn it off.

I wonder why they make an exception for Canada. I wonder if it’s the law there that they have to accept contactless payment?

I thought it had been mandated by the card networks, but many Canadians who claim to have worked at walmart say otherwise, so no idea.

It's very surprising that Canada is seemingly so ahead of the US in contactless payments. This is more than just Apple Pay.

No apple only points out Apple Pay in their advertisement because they’re not going to advertise Google pay for Google. It’s the same way common factors don’t talk about the other brands safety features when they mention their own. I think everyone knows that there are alternatives to Apple Pay, such as Google pay and Samsung pay. I don’t think millions of Americans are ignorant as you claim.

The way they advertised, it sounded as if NFC were their own proprietary technology. Proof that they want people to believe that is that in Europe, where contactless was already the norm in 2014, Apple refused to turn on contactless at its stores until they officially released Apple Pay, not caring that they could be the only place in a whole country not to have it.

It was in late 2020, I believe, just before Samsung announced they were going to abandon MST. Besides, Samsung only abandoned MST by not including it in newer devices. Older Samsung devices that came with MST are still able to use it.

I shop at Walmart all the time, and Walmart Pay works pretty much flawlessly. I think I had an issue only once out of hundreds and hundreds of transactions. Absolutely no complaints from me! And I love being able to track my purchase history and receipts in the app (and easily export receipts as high-res .jpg images).

I've made hundreds of Walmart Pay transactions and only had one time where there was an issue. The screen said the pmt failed even though I received a Chase text saying a charge was authorized. The manager was called and he gave me his contact info in case I saw a double charge (he told me I'd have to use my physical card), but I never saw a double charge. Sorry you've had such bad luck. My experience is the opposite.
