Want to change spinning beachball cursor

I like the old spinning beachball (“pinwheel of doom”) better than the new “flat” version, so I want to replace it in El Capitan with the one from Yosemite. I can’t find it though.

I see all the other cursors at

But not the pinwheel of doom.

So where is the spinning beachball located?

Interesting. After the same old ugly beachball since OS X Public Beta I was so glad to see the new Beachball in El Capitan. Sorry I don't have an answer for you but as much as waiting cursors just show the machine is unable to complete the task right away, I really like the new flat designed Beachball.
 
really, almost anything would be an improvement over the old beachball...we've been staring at that one (well i have) since the dawn of time (more or less). the new one is much better...give it time, you'll adapt!
 
Really guys? Someone posts “I like A better than B” and your response is “No you don’t”? (Or “No you won’t.”) Really?

I may not know much about graphic design, but I know what I like. And I like the old pinwheel better than the new one. I also like the old folder icons from Mavericks better than the ones that came with Yosemite, so I kept them too.

The question stands: how does one modify the spinning beachball cursor? As far as I can tell it may be procedurally generated by Core Graphics, since I don’t see any image files for it anywhere.

hey, just observations, no one's telling you you can't go for what you want. the thing is...how long do you keep at it? thru this OS, the next OS...before you realize it doesn't really matter? what Thunderboltedge said is the true goal...for us to NEVER see a beachball again; that's what i look forward to.
 
Really fisherking? You’re going from “anything would be an improvement over the old beachball” to “it doesn’t really matter”?

Of course it matters! One of the reasons I prefer OS X over other operating systems is the visual appearance. I want to have my computer look good to me. The folder icons, in particular, I think are gaudy so I am quite glad that it is possible to replace them. And I’d like to do the same with the beachball.

Which you want to change… I choose OS X precisely because it’s such a pain to change these things. Linux drives me crazy sometimes with all the tweaks only a command away. o_O

Spotlight doesn’t reveal anything either, no images or PDFs. Could indeed be the case that it’s programmatically generated.

I don't see anyone here telling you how you should like your computer. I just said I happened to like the new El Capitan cursor. Really man, with that attitude, the way your blasting people no one will want to help you. Kind replies will take you far. I'm out.

Yes, I want to change it back to the way it was, which I liked.

Moreover, the customizability of OS X (either directly through view options and System Preferences, or via third-party programs like TinkerTool and BetterTouchTool) is another major reason I like the platform.

So having a part of it go from something I like the look of to something I don’t like as much, with no way to change it back, is rather annoying.

you liked the beachball? i HATE it. it's my nightmare. whenever I see it i start swearing. how can you LIKE beachball lol. it's literally the symbol of death
 
How do I change the cursor white hand to a middle finger when clicking on something

On the net all I see is how to on Windows not Mac

it's progress, change...and it's inevitable. most things are not designed so that you can have it as it was previously...especially in tech. it would be like replacing your lcd tv with a tube tv. give the new beachball time, and it won't matter anymore. :cool:

Now this I can help with:

1. Navigate to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/HIServices.framework/Versions/A/Resources/cursors
2. Copy the pointinghand folder to somewhere like your Documents folder.
4. Use a drawing program to create a replacement cursor.pdf file that looks how you want.
5. Keep a copy of the original as a backup.
6. If you’re on El Capitan, turn Rootless off.
7. Copy your new cursor.pdf file back to the original location where you found it.
8. Restart.

(I think you’ll even be able to turn Rootless back on when you’re done, but you’ll have to try it.)

Since I have the "beachball" showing up more on 10.11 than on any previous version of OS X going back to 10.5, I'm going to have to learn to "like" it.

The very number reason I do NOT want El Capitan and is doing everything I can to make 10.10 to look as much as 10.6 as I can...
This flat design crap has to stop. If I wanted an fugly Windows machine, I would not be paying the premium to get Apple's computers. Enough is ENOUGH.

seriously, isn't what's under the hood the most important thing of all? which makes el capitan a good (and potentially great) OS. and...a lot of us like the flat UI; i much prefer it to the 'older' look of OS X. so...it all comes down to opinion. meanwhile, the world moves forward, and you can move with it...or struggle to hold back...

Can't see under the hood if the outside is fugly as heck. Would you be interested in looking into the hood of the Pontiac Aztek if you have to buy it first? And so I am holding back, but they are alienating a part of their customers by making things unusable and breaking things that used to work perfectly fine.

what are they making unusable? and what are they breaking? and again, not everyone thinks the new flat look is ugly...

so apple is making changes for no reason? i don't always agree with what they do, but what seems more realistic: that they are doing things with intent, or they're making changes for no reason?

this is progress; not always perfect, not always suited to what the individual user wants. but obviously, they can't please everyone. so again...you move forward, or stay back. at least that's a choice than you can make...

Until I plunked down 1k for the 6s and then found out I had to be removed from my happy circle of Snow Leopard...

On the day when my phone to call up people is unusable because of the iOS 9.0 bug...getting a different OS on my iMac was sure the first thing in my mind...
That is definitely not the user-friendliness that Apple had been providing...
