So where is the spinning beachball located?

Exactly, where is the spinning beachball icon located? This is the question, nothing else. Lots of talk about anything but the actual issue.

Did you even read the post directly above yours. It's a link to an app that lets you change the beachball and all other cursor aspects.

None of this says where the image is stored.
Have they got it in some compressed resource block somewhere?
Hard to believe they generate it on the fly.

It is possible. I have had a superficial look at the application posted by w0lf. It uses private APIs to extract the pointers from the framework and puts them into a property-list file. There they are stored as very long strings of random numbers under a <data> object. I think that some of these pointers are not stored in a graphical format, but as NSData objects. The NSData APIs can convert these into a graphical format again at runtime. While looking at the source code, I noticed that there are nine pointers which have CoreGraphics identifiers. All of these are missing in the “cursors” folder mentioned by the OP. This includes the beach ball, as well as the standard pointer and cursor. It is plausible that these pointers are not stored in a graphical format on disk.

And how have you or would you replace the beach ball?

Download a theme or make your own. I don't know if an image file for the old beachball exists but you could probably make one relatively easily with moderate image editing skills.

I also prefer default settings, but when they're good (and Apple almost always designed everything right in the past). However, that's not the case anymore, and enough is enough. It all began with the intrusive, computer-unfriendly, smartphone-friendly "autosave", which I disabled when helpful users found how to disable it. Now, the new flat beachball is an insult. Sure, it doesn't affect functionality like autosave did, but it's an insult (not because the old one had to be preserved at all costs, they could have made it flat if they wish, but please, not with this rainbow -it is an insult).

I don't know if I'll change it with Mousecape, because it doesn't look like a clean solution (it needs to run at login, etc, etc), although on the other hand, maybe I don't need to change it, as I tend to believe my days as Mac user are numbered, considering how upset I am with every change introduced from Snow Leopard until today -and also remembering how happy I was with every change they made until Snow Leopard).

good luck, you won't be missed :D must be hard being you. complaining about an ICON... goddamn you have a lot of free time on your hands.

Well, I'm a long-time Mac user, and we chose the Mac specially because we care for detail. Of course this is no longer the case across Apple customers, there's no care for the details nor for professional use anymore. Now it's iOS-teens-fanbase coupled with left-wing politics only. Today Apple is basically a crossproduct between a phone/fashion company and a political party.

I am with you until you brought in the politics part...(Not to be political, but more like wanting to leave political talks out of this)
It is a very sad fact that the look and feel are changed for the sake of change. They were perfectly fine and no changes were necessary.

so...nothing should change? and, at what point, do you decide when something is 'perfect'? i, for one, welcome change (even if it's not always to my taste); it makes life interesting. everything is in transition anyway; watch, as people here complain about the next mac OS, wishing it were more like el capitan. ad infinitum...

I do not believe I said "nothing should change". But why is it necessary to change a round wheel to square when the round wheel works perfectly fine?
When the next one comes out and is worse than what is it now, I would not be complaining and wishing it would be more like El Capitan. Because I would be either wishing it would be more like Snow Leopard, or getting fed up with Apple.

"round wheel to square'...what does that mean? can you apply it to something real in el cap? and it's all subjective. look at what you're saying; you're already anticipating that the next OS will be 'worse than what it is now'. not everyone feels like that. 10.6.8 was a peak moment for apple, but i would not go back. instead, i hope, instead, that 10.11.8 is another peak.
some people want things to be as they were. and some of us enjoy moving forward...

Seriously, 'the new flat beachball is an insult'? Overreaction much?

You're clearly the sort of person that will moan about anything, so I imagine the world doesn't pay much attention to you.

Make a square wheel (the middle one on the attached picture), that is what these tweaks to how it looks and feel are doing.

Where did I say I am anticipating the next is worse than what it is now? I was simply suggesting what I would do IF the next one coming out is worse. (Given the track record on recent OS releases, they are not bringing my hopes up though)

i have no idea how those images relate to the beachball in el capitan...or anything on my mac. and this is what you wrote: "When the next one comes out and is worse than what is it now".

personally, i had no problem with yosemite, and am having a (mostly) stellar experience with el cap. snow leopard? great, back in the day. here, am enjoying the present, and i look forward to the future...

The images are showing what a square wheel looks like, because you said ""round wheel to square'...what does that mean?". Maybe I misunderstood that you did not know what is a square wheel.
The beachball on the older version looks much more vibrant and beautiful than this one in El Capitan.
It was working perfectly fine and no need to make it worse.

And please do not just quote half of my statement. There is a comma there and it is a 2 parts sentence.
I said "When the next one comes out and is worse than what is it now, I would not be complaining and wishing it would be more like El Capitan."

Glad that Yosemite is good for YOU.
But it has been a total disaster to me. Here are some examples:
The finder sidebar is always showing more than half the width of the finder window with no way to make narrower permanently, meaning opening a new finder window after adjusting it would not have any effect on the newly opened one.
Did this issue happen in Snow Leopard? No.

The music files are no longer capable of previewing the song in Finder and is affecting random music files on the computer. (I mean there is a play button when hovering the cursor above the music file)
This issue never happened in Snow Leopard using the very same hardware.

All the icons in Yosemite and El Capitan looked hideous. The older icons are way more vibrant and simply popped.

Lastly, the finder window simply lacked the necessary contrast between each line of file. The older version on Snow Leopard are way easier on the eyes to see each and every line.

i never said anything about 'round wheel to square', perhaps someone else did. i see that you did... meanwhile, you're right, let's use the entire quote of yours:

"When the next one comes out and is worse than what is it now, I would not be complaining and wishing it would be more like El Capitan. Because I would be either wishing it would be more like Snow Leopard, or getting fed up with Apple."

perhaps...stop complaining? just because you have an experience (issues, preferring the previous beachball), doesn't mean we all have that experience. not everyone sees the world the same way...and that's ok.

I used an example, you asked what does that mean, I responded to your inquiry. What was so complicated?
Stop complaining will not get us anywhere. If we put up with garbage products, they won't get improved.
Glad that it works for YOU and YOU are happy about that.
It is a good idea to also listen to others that it does not work for them.
(For some reason, I feel like I am having a discussion to a sales rep from Apple...)

i can't help if you feel like you're discussing something with a sales rep from apple. and i still don't understand your visual example. either way, discussion is better than complaining. and don't expect apple to change it's ways to accomodate you. you go with the changes, or stay on an older OS. or modify what you can (i do a lot of that myself). whatever works....in the real world.

On the day when my phone to call up people is unusable because of the iOS 9.0 bug...getting a different OS on my iMac was sure the first thing in my mind...
That is definitely not the user-friendliness that Apple had been providing...

After reading your post and looking at your sig you are clearly just a very unhappy person.
