So Calif
....
I do have a different bug though - I see 2 identical volumes of my macOS Big Sur installation. I can't get rid of one of them, so I am stuck looking at 2 identical volumes in Disk Utility and on my desktop. No actual usage issues, but a rather cosmetic one. It's really weird.
I see something too - there are 3 SSD drives - 1 more than usual ( Catalina had 2).
While I was creating a bootable Big Sur SD card, I see 3 drives the top is grayed out..

Can someone tell me what the grayed out top drive means ?

To be clear, the update downloads, the computer restarts, and before it does the upgrade (or very soon after it begins), it gets locked and never continues. That's how it went for me, anyway.

I'm sorry that happened. It sounds horrifying.

Is your Mac a refurb too?

I think the activation lock happened to referb Macs only :/

That’s interesting. Mine was new, not refurb, so maybe that’s why it’s not giving me issues.

On another note, my Mac Pro 6,1 is refurbished, but that doesn’t have a T2 chip so it’s probably not relevant.

It seems like the macOS Big Sur installer is checking for the first account ever associated with the Mac, even before it was refurbished… Strange bug.

How does it know that?! This implies the T2 chip never gets properly cleared. That's not good.

Or is there another explanation?

What a relief! Were they able to do this remotely or did you have to send it in? I sent my proof of purchase a couple days ago. Roughly how long did it take for you?

Yikes. Mine's a refurb. Hope they clear this up by the Public Beta, but if they don't, I bought it directly from them, so it should be on file.

I sent proof in with a form they sent by email an next day (today) I got an email saying it’s been unlocked. I think they unlocked the device itself to boot up as new... they did it remotely so don’t have to take it anywhere or send it off... currently downloading Catalina an will put big sur on when the official public beta is out an get it direct from the Apple site :)

I sent in my form too, did you get an email or anything that confirmed your form submission? I have a case number but beyond that I don't have a way to follow up or check the status of the case online.

Thats great to hear. I installed it on my MacBook Pro 16inch (not refurbished) first day as well and so far its working fine but I was really worried this can't be fixed remotely incase it happens to me. I'm happy for you

Happy to hear it can be resolved remotely. I was fearing the worst, having an expensive brick.

I still haven't gotten an email yet, if I don't get a response by tomorrow I'm going to be calling support back and complaining. Ridiculous how long it takes to unbrick a $2000+ machine.

I like the look of everything new in Big Sur, but it's going to be soooo long before I install it. Genuine thanks to the guinea pigs here who boldly go.
