Yes, you are right

To be honest in a business sense it would make sense for UPS to sound more concerned. To Apple they can probably write it off...sell that many anyway.
But UPS?...if news gets out that this is happening they lose the massive contract they have with Apple...truth is they may sound concerned and supportive, but not for your personal reasons. A missing iPod probably costs Apple next to nothing, they ship you another one, no problem...don't make a fuss about it, they have a system in place to deal with it (quickly and efficiently I hope!), while UPS, a missing iPod would cost a lot more.

Yes, you are right - and that's what has me most concerned. I need to order stuff online as well as ship stuff (expensive stuff). I need to be absolutely sure it will get there because I can't afford a loss. I've been very happy with UPS so far but now I have to consider if I want to stay with UPS. I just hope they get to the bottom of this.

I honestly hope this was just one big mistake and it can be fixed. Hopefully sooner than later, cause an ipod in the hand is worth six in an empty box.

I agree that you should look into a different carrier for expensive packages. My parents are into trading aniques (mainly books, model trains, and china) on ebay. They send packages worth several hundered dollars through USPS every week and have never had a problem.

Theres more iPods shipping around than $1000 equipment...which do you think would go un-noticed more, or could perhaps slip under the radar and get easily compensated for??? (Granted it hasn't exactly slipped under the radar, but you get my point? Common 1 of several million $300 small device that gets shipped every week compared to the much rarer occasional $1000 device shipment from a lesser source.)

What's so puzzling about today it that I got two boxes that must've originally weighed about the same (one accessories, one with iPod). How did they know which one had the iPod? That's what makes me think it was someone much closer to Apple. I suspect that there never really was an iPod in that box...

The lines are always way too long at my local Post Office. I don't think USPS does pick-up. Also, I heard that if you do have a loss with USPS it takes forever to get your money.

That doesn't even make sense. Look, I know that you're probably very upset and all, but please: Use some rational thought. Read my previous post. Slow down and think. With your mind.

I'm just saying that most people call Apple to report the loss, get a new iPod and forget it. These people never post or do anything about it and it just keeps hapening. I want to warn people so they know there's a problem.

This is an example of why things don't get fixed at Apple - Apple has an invisible shield of fanatics who protect the company from anyone who might say a disparaging word.

UPS, on the other hand, just has guys in brown shirts.

I'm not saying it can't be UPS but it could be someone who works for Apple at a distribution point along the way.
Look at it like this. iPods are made in a factory in China, put into boxes by local workers, sent to the shipping office in the factory, where they are picked up a local shipping company that's unaffiliated to Apple or UPS.

The shipment is delivered to a local collection center, where it is unloaded from the truck and placed in the queue for international shipping. From there it is placed on another truck and delivered to the airport, unloaded from the truck and probably remains in the local shipping company's airport offices for a couple of days, until it's its turn to be shipped.

It's transferred to the aircraft, and flies to the Phillipines, where it's unloaded and stored locally for at least several hours, then placed on another aircraft for delivery to the US. The aircraft lands in Alaska, where it is once again unloaded, and transferred to the UPS collection center.

There, it is stored for several hours until the next flight to the nearest main UPS hub to you, where it is loaded unto another truck and delivered to your local UPS center, unloaded from the truck and transferred to another truck for delivery to you.

From the time it leaves Apple's facilities in China, it isn't actually in Apple's possession at all, and successful delivery depends on the honesty of at least twelve different handlers and probably two or three different shipping companies.

Yes, Apple are responsible for getting the package to you, but saying Apple are stealing your money is a bit of a stretch.

Right there, back up a little! you said "new ipod and forget it." Now i could be wrong (again, someone tell me if i'm wrong) but what if there ISN'T this problem and it just happens sometimes? wouldn't it go over better if you did like everyone else and did get your ipod and didn't make your heartbeat go above 100 bpm?

You're expecting us to believe that a box containing those accessories is the same weight and size as a box containing an iPod?

How do you know that? Everyone I know has purchased iPods via the Apple online store and never had a problem. I am glad you try to warn people but it is obvious, through five pages of MR discussions, that empty boxes are not a driving issue. So far you are the only person who has had this problem and yet you continue these outrageous claims involving 10,000 + iPod users.
Lets turn down the RDF for a moment and think:
1) You had the misfortune of getting two iPods stolen. Apple is replacing them.
2) Apple legal is good, but not good enough to contain a conspiracy involving THOUSANDS of iPod users.
3) The government is not reading yours, or anybodies, thoughts. We can all take the Aluminum pyramids off our heads.
Dulcimer, if you get to thinking with your liver feel free to add to my list of realities. I just graduated to the spleen.

No, today I got two boxes:

Box 1.) Camera Connector, AC Adapter. :)

Box 2.) 30 G iPod (but missing)

I'm saying these two boxes would have been close in weight had the iPod been in the 2nd box.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up! :)

I'm not sure where the problem is. It may be that the problem is at a distribution point in Southern California near where I live and that's why I've been hit twice.

I AM sure that there is a problem:

100 boxes delivered to my house by UPS without iPod: 0 problems

2 boxes delivered to my house by UPS with iPod: 2 problems

Well, with USPS you can do everything online and then print a packing slip thing (not sure what it's actually called). They even give you free delivery confirmation if you do stuff online. Also if you've done everything online, there should be separate window with a bell where someone will take the package from you and you don't have to wait in line. Just sharing what I know. :)

edit- is it just me or did this thread just shrink?

Just a question...since when did Apple start using UPS as a shipping carrier? Everything I've ever ordered from Apple (whether it came from China or California) has always been shipped via FedEx.

Even when I called Apple customer service once to inquire about getting UPS shipping for a Mac I ordered (due to the fact that our FedEx service is absolutely awful here locally), I was told that they exclusively use FedEx for all shipments and that UPS simply wasn't an option if you ordered direct from Apple's online store...

Thank you. You just gave the answer to your own problem. Someone at UPS is stealing iPods and I suggest you file a claim, including damages suffered from flames on MR. :D
As we have learned:
It is out of Apple's hands once it leaves China.
Some minimum wage worker at UPS is at fault.
As for your "untampered" box, I am sure they either replaced the box (they are UPS, after all) or did a meticulous job of re-taping it.
Okay, you can turn the RDF back on now. :)

I agree, i have only gotten them from Fedex. The only time i've seen apple use anything else was when my ipod broke and i had to send it back, they sent the empty box i was to send back to them using DHL (kinda ironic isn't it? i guess i got an empty box too!). but even when my refurb came it was fedex i'm pretty sure.

I'm guessing area/region/country/state??

It's TNT mostly (if not entirely) in the UK.

I can't clearly remember who delivered my iMac, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't FedEx.

Yes, when I ordered my PowerBook it came by FedEx. The iPods are shipped from China on a FedEx plane. I ordered accessories too so somewhere in this country my ordered was put together to be shipped to me by UPS. That's where I suspect the problem is. I don't know if Apple or UPS or FEdEx owns that facility but I think it's wrong to blame UPS just yet.

I was told by Apple customer service recently that all US shipments anyway were handled via FedEx. That's why I was curious as to how UPS could have been involved with the alleged missing iPod shipments if he ordered direct from Apple. I've also ordered Apple software and accessories on many occasions (which ships from California, not China) and those have all been FedEx as well. Just was wondering when that policy changed because I'd prefer UPS myself, but I've always been told it's not an option from Apple.
