It was my first smartphone. I bought it because I'm a bit of a technology geek and loved the iPhone touchscreen.. but then I felt cheated because of some of the missing features like MMS. Every phone released in the last 10 years in this country has had picture messaging, big fail apple :(

Actually it's an epic fail on your part! Oct 13, 2003 is when MMS became "standard" - hardly 10 years!

Let's not get into talking about what other phones don't have that should have been standard or has been standard for some time.

Well, one! Checking email on a phone has been around since 1998; now how many phones actually have it.....

I had a BB Pearl with AT&T just before the first generation iPhone. It was a HUGE step up to an iPhone where I could experience full web pages, much much faster.

First smartphone, and the iPhone brand will probably be my only smartphone. I've had a two crap phones before it (Nokia 6126 and LG Shine CU720 [Silver Aluminum]).

Yes, the iPhone was my first. I had a Razr before. I was never interested in games but very much wanted email and internet. The iPhone was a breakthrough for me.

I had the Motorola A1200! It was an interesting phone its os was linux. had MMS, Video, Touch screen, Music player, expandable memory, replace battery! The only problem i had with it was you had to use the stylus for everything because the keyboard was tiny! but i love my iphone i don't know how i would go back an old phone if i ever had to! :p

It was my first, I bought the iPhone so i could have a phone in my ipod (which i always carried around with me) so it felt like a natural progression. I previously had some awful Motorola Rzr which i hated. I could happily use the iPhone till the end of time :)

I'm not fussed about games or apps really, i drop a few puzzle based games on and writeroom so i can jot down my novel ideas.

I've had several HTC WM phones over the years...

Although I think in a lot of areas the iPhone is lacking in comparison I do think the user interface is a million times better.

All in all though I don't regret getting an iPhone and ditching windows mobile... I just hope that 3.0 will make it catch up in the areas where its lacking in comparison.

The Nokia 3210 released in 1999 contained picture messaging.. as did every phone I've ever used.

From what I can remember, the phones I used were these:

Nokia 3210 (which I got shortly after its release date)
Nokia 3310
Nokia 3330
Samsung z140v
Sony Ericsson w850i (<< brilliant phone, I still prefer this over the iPhone in a number of ways)
iPhone

ALL of those phones other than the iPhone contained picture messaging, with the samsung and ericsson phones supporting audio/video messaging too.

I'm from the UK, not US, it may be different over there :)

I had a K800i before it. The k800 is a great phone, supports Opera mobile and email and stuff, but the iPhone is just on another level. The apps are desktop class.

how many bought it because it was an ipod with a phone.

I've been developing Nokia Communicator back in 2001 when it first got Symbian OS (EPOC 5 at that time). So yes, I've been using smartphones a lot. Compared to iPhone those were not very smart.

I have also had iPod far longer than it has had color display and have always wanted to integrate a phone into it. Now it's complete, so yes, I bought iPhone because it's a phone that can easily sync most my personal data from laptop.

It's my third or fourth smartphone. I'd been a Palm customer for 10 years before the iPhone, and had a few PDAs and then a few Treos.

For a while there, I was carrying a Palm PDA, a cell phone, and an iPod.

My first smartphone was loosely of this era -- the Nokia 3650. The next phone was not a smartphone (Razr) and then a BB 8700. So the iPhone was my third. I have to say I didn't buy it because I particularly thought it was a better smartphone or out of any desire to reduce the number of devices -- in fact I was skeptical that I'd really want to use the iPhone for music instead of my nano until after I got it.

I bought it essentially because it seemed more fun than other smartphones, even if was sometimes less efficient. I'm pretty happy with the decision.

It is indeed my first smartphone. I was looking at upgrading to a crackberry on Verizon then figured if I'm gonna spend that much a month on my phone plan, I may as well go with the iPhone.

That is pretty much the main reason I got one. From 2 devices to one. Plus, since just about everything has some sort of iPod connectivity these days, it's really convenient to have an iPod with you at all times.

also my first and it was going from 3 or 4 devices to 1 that got me.

i had another smartphone with Verizon, but i didn't use it as much as i use the iphone

I previously had a BB Pearl that was a nightmare. My main reason for going with the iPhone was to switch from two devices to one allowing me to get rid of my iPod video. The possibilities of the App store were also a big plus.

The iPhone was my first smart phone. I was originally going to wait until my contract was up and get a windows mobile phone or a blackberry, but with the app store I decided to get a 3G. It's pretty slick.

Smartphones before the iPhone all sucked. It was really the turning point.
Yep.

I wanted all my things in one device. iPhone did that and blew away the competition. I didn't want to go learning how to sync all this Blackberry crap when I already knew iTunes like the back of my hand.

Do you feel cheated because your iPhone doesn't have support Morse code telegrams? Because it doesn't, and for a while it was the standard mode of long distance communication... Big fail Apple! Big fail!

To get back on topic: the iPhone was my first smart phone.

Yes, my first smartphone was the original iPhone. To be honest I wasn't even interested in smartphones until the iPhone was demoed and I saw how useful it would be. Now I can't imagine myself without one.

I used to hate cell phones in general. I never really got into them. When the iPhone came out, I bought an iPod touch 3 months later... then I was hooked. I had the iPod touch for about a year, then I bought a first generation iPhone. Then 3 months later I gave it to my girlfriend and bought an iPhone 3G. Then I returned the 3G 4 times for various issues. Then I bought a used first gen iPhone 8GB. I didn't like how damaged it was, so I sold it and bought an Apple refurbished 4GB iPhone. I still have it and use it from time to time. I switch back and forth between my 3G and my first gen iPhone. I love the hardware of the first gen, but I like 3G and GPS too... I can't seem to make up my mind.
