Actually... I'd hardly consider the iPhone, or most smart phones (at least on AT&T), to be phones. But yeah, it was my first smart ____ that was (kinda) on a cell network.
Yup.
I went into the AT&T store to get a new battery for my Razr. While waiting, I played around with the iPhones on display. Bought one of those instead.
My iPod had just died the week before, and I was getting ready to take a motorcycle ride across the country, and was looking for a small portable GPS. I did the math, and a $600 phone was cheaper than a new iPod, a GPS and a battery. I was already on AT&T, so I went for it.
Had the misfortune of using the Razr again for a week, and hated it.
You do realize it's not $600 phone, it's a ~$2200 phone.... (remember the monthly service for 2 years)
It's a $600 phone with a <$1500 contract. He was already on AT&T so it's a pretty good deal, since he'd be paying for the plan anyway. He'd also have to pay for the GPS service too had he bought a separate device.

He could have had a go-phone. I have a go-phone Razr, but I use my iPhone as a go-phone instead. Works out rather nice.
So, basically. I have an iPhone without a contract, on AT&T and I don't have to pay a couple grand a year to have it.

Oh and jav6454, it was a $600 dollar phone. The first iPhone was sold without a contract. I didn't have to sign up for service. I got lucky, and the price drop happened 10 days after I got it, so I was refunded the $200. So it was a $400 dollar phone. Which was then traded to a guy on Craigslist for a 3G when the 3G was still unable to be unlocked.
