Fix

Take the phone and put it in a sealed plastic bag with uncooked rice. The rice will absorb the moisture. This works try it.......

Three things strike me interesting about this thread. Mysterious water, Hitler/Jew reference ?, and people still advising him how to fix the phone he already returned to Apple for an exchange.

Now let me say this, it would FREAK me the eff out if I woke up to a wet Iphone 3g. I would be confused, and just overwhelmed with confusednessness.

:)

Seriously, wtf happened dude. Did you have a glass of water there? Leak from above?

Honestly, it still really boggles my mind. The top of the night stand was completey 100% dry when looking it. However, when you pick up the items that were on top of the night stand (my iPhone, an alarm clock and a small fan), each one had a puddle of water under it exactly the same shape as each corresponding item. It's almost as if someone lifted everything up on the night stand, poured water all over the top of it, set the items back down and then overnight everything except the water under the items dried.

I don't know, it's crazy to me. I guess all that matters is that the water indicator never changed colors and the phone is getting replaced.

Also, just want to add how interesting I think it is that everyone is on their moral high horse about the way I chose to handle the situation. To each his own I guess.

Water damaged my old iphone

I was taking a leak while talking on my iphone. It accidentally slipped of my hand and took the same path as my leak and ended up water damaged.

I tried to switch off the phone (hard shutoff by holding both top and bottom button) , but it got automatically turned on after being shut for 2-3 minutes.
Screen started to behave wierdly, i got messages like this accessory connected might not work with your iphone, and random lines on the screen every time it got restared. I took my hair dryer and to dry the piss out of it and after that, everything else is working fine, except bottom 2/3 of my screen is not responding to touch. I am receiving calls, but cannot pick them up.

My phone is 1 year 2 months old so its out of warranty.
I think hair dryer didn't work so rice solution or keeping it under a lamp might also not work but i will try those in next 2 days.

Any other suggestions ?

At that point, you should have just flushed it. Who wants to press a pPhone up against their face anyway?

On Jul 25, 2008, 05:52 PM PFLAU posted instructions for drying out an iphone in a bag of rice. This saved my iPhone (thankyouthankyouthankyou), but heed my warning tale:

Just short of a month with my iPhone 3G and sure enough, ploop into the water it went (my small dog has a soup mug of water on my nightstand). It fell in head first (sim card slot end), and I grabbed it within 3 seconds, but no response at all.

I took out the sim card, which worked just fine in my old Treo 650 - after my iPhone spent couple of days in a zipped baggie with a cup of rice, all signs of moisture had disappeared, including the visible puddle under the screen (just as pflau said it would). Good as new, right?

Not quite. When I went to insert the sim card, it wouldn't go quite all the way in. Turns out a piece of rice had gotten down into the slot (which I left open for drying purposes). It was wedged in there so tight, I gave up and went to the Genius Bar. Guy there got it out and said "now don't open that slot again."

He never even asked me how it happened, but I told him anyway - the best part being he checked my moisture sensor and it was unchanged... (Plus they didn't charge me anything and I gave the techs a chuckle to boot.)

FWIW, though - if you're going to put your iPhone in a bag of rice, stick the phone in a piece of nylon stocking first . . .

water damage. phone will not turn off

im assuming i also have water damage on my phone. lens on camera is fogged up. i sometimes get messages on my phone saying that this accessorie does work with iphone do you want to turn on airplane mode. also my phone will not turn off, after i try to turn it off it will automatically come back on after a few seconds... please help. i will do that rice trick.

Put the phone in dry rice and let it dry out for a few days. It might come back to life.

I've never understood why whenever people drop something in water they first try to turn it on? That's going to kill the device if it wasn't already dead. Electrical stuff + water = don't turn it on!

Or go to Hobby Lobby or other art/craft store and get a bag of Silica dessicant for drying flowers and such. Put in air tight container. This worked for my husband's old iPhone.

i got water all on the inside of my screen when applying my skin. All i did was put it in some dry rice and 2 days later it was fine. i have some dots where moisture maybe. im going to get some silica packs and throw my iphone in a zip lock bag again, it should all disappear. RICE DOES WONDERS

Water damaged my old iphone

30 min. under a hair dryer blower -> Phone started but touch screen not responding to touch. I can receive calls using my headphones, but cannot call back.

36 Hours under 500gm uncooked rice tied in a polythene bag. -> Nothing

24 Hours under a Lamp with a high-power bulb -> Nothing.

My phone will go into darkness of my drawer, because i don't have 250$ to spend on replacing touchscreen and will start using my old phone.
Will wait probably 1 year so that screen cost comes down to 100$ or something.
I just love electronic goods deflation :D

I don't think the cost of the V1 screen replacement dropped in the past 13-14 months.

This happen to me today with Gen1 iPHone and putting BSE on. Did your screen was unresponsive ? Did it come back to life after you used rice with it ?

yea my phone works perfectly fine now. There are a couple of moisture dots that are left but I will put it in a bag full of silica bags and it should be fine.

My wet iPhone

So I got rain water into my ear piece and it turns on when I have it hooked up to the charger, computer, or any source of power. Yet once I leave it go into sleep mode it starts restarted itself constantly. I don't know what will help it exactly. It does still work apparently. Right now I have it in a ziplock container full with rice under a lamp. If this doesn't work what else could I try?

Apple replaced mine for the airplane mode thing. It did it constantly. Call em up and give them the skinny.

SBG88 is a self-professed liar?

You lucked out. Since the indicator was still white you should have said it just didn't turn on. Never tell the truth if you can avoid it.

Wow, I sure hope you are joking, SBG88. Lying is completely against American mores, and in fact frowned on most everywhere, for a good reason: it backfires.

No, I'm not some country bumpkin or religious nut, I'm a world traveler, living in urban San Francisco, and I taught in an inner-city school.

I can't tell you how many free things I've gotten that I wasn't "supposed" to, simply by telling the truth openly and forthrightly, and nicely. People want to help you when you are honest. Look at our friend here, who got the new iPhone despite fessing up about the moisture.

Researchers have found that backstabbers don't end up as successful in life (in terms of salary and position, for example), as honest Abes.

In fact, I broke up with a girlfriend because she returned a new camera she had dropped in the lake and said it had come that way, and got mad at the store for selling her a wet camera (quite a piece of acting). If lying is that easy for her, she'll be lying to me next. Lying got her a free camera, but lost her her boyfriend.

36 Hours under 500gm uncooked rice tied in a polythene bag. -> Nothing

You should have tried putting the bag of uncooked rice (or other desiccant) with the phone in a warm place (under a lamp or direct sunlight) and waiting longer. Maybe a week or 10 days. Don't try to turn the device on. It might also help to wrap the phone in a cloth handkerchief before putting it in rice to keep rice dust from getting inside the phone.

ymmv.

Throw her my way.. I like her style.

What if I just went into the Apple store and said some random person spilled a beer all over me and some got on my phone that was in my hand. Think they'll have any sympathy?
Certainly they'll be sympathetic. They won't replace it on warranty, but I'm sure they'll feel bad for you.

the apple store will replace it for the subsidezed $199/$299 price if it's still under warranty, meaning at least you won't have to pay full price.
