I thought most people got either Hitachi or Fujitsu drives this time round with their C2D MacBook Pros ???

oh hell yeah

Hitachi's 250GB/5400rpm drive isn't going to be out for another few months. WD is the first one to make a mac compatible drive, and I'll be getting that for my MBP as soon as I get it :D

We should be seeing 250gig 5400RPM drives soon!

Just read on dailytech.com about Western Digital releasing a 250 gig 5400 RPM laptop 2.5 inch hardrive with really high density (which means it will perform at about the same level of todays laptop 7200 rpm drives but with the 5400 rpm power consumption). I believe earlier this month I read on engadget about Samsung also prepping a drive of the same size, so we should see these drives in our new Santa Roas MBPs in the next couple of months, combine these drives with backlit displays, faster ram, Flash ram, 802.11N, 4 gigs of ram, and faster processor speeds, and we are talking about a serious apple upgrade.

You can put it as an option on a number of laptops already.

I've made a nice chart comparing the pc laptops that I'd get if the new macbook pro is a let down.

Shame its a Western Digital. I've had countless fail on me over the years and would never trust them again, no matter how big they are. By the sounds of things though, the other manufacturers are hot on the tails of Western Digital with large laptop drives.

funny because my last WD hard drive failed as well.

I'm considering:

Toshiba
Satellite P200
Vista
17” widescreeen
C2D 2.0ghz
7600GO 256MB
2048MB DDR667
250GB 4200RPM
$1,575.90

Lenovo Thinkpad
T61
Vista
14.1” widescreen
C2D 2.2ghz
Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M
4096 MB DDR 667
160GB 5400 RPM
$2,088.00

Sony
VGN-FZ190
Vista
15.4” widescreen
C2D 2.2Ghz
Geforce 8400M GT
4096MB DDR 667
250GB 4200RPM
$2,120.00

Alienware
Area 51 M5550

C2D 2.33Ghz
Nvidia Go 7600 256MB

I don't get it. If Apple doesn't update the Macbook Pro, you're going to buy a windows computer that has the same specs as the current MBP. Seems kind of stupid.

Just so you know, only the Sony will support 4GB of ram because it is the only one on the Santa Rosa platform. The rest will only support 3.2GB because they are running on the Napa platform just like the Macbook Pro currently is.

Btw, I have a dell e1505 2ghz core duo/2gb/120gb and it's a piece of crap. Don't buy one.

Noted.

I'm not so much considering them as using them for comparison. The only thing I could see myself getting would be a T-61 and even that is a long shot. Price is also an issue.

I love to buy things and I love to compare things before I buy them.

And the T-61 has SR and supports up to 4GB or ram.

This is what is looks like:

Does having 250GB in a laptop scare anyone? I would definitely fear a WD of this size, because they're probably bound to fail :).

Why does a larger hard drive mean that it has a higher probability of failing? Fujitsu also carries a 250gb drive. Would you have more faith in that one?

IMHO the only thing on this list that is a better option than the current MBP is the Alienware, which I was going to get way back when before I switched to Macs.

I don't mean to sound like a n00b but I have read through the reports and the posts and I still don't see the big fuss over Santa Rosa. I do see the big deal with more HDD space and more RAM and LED displays but Santa Rosa doesn't seem to offer anything substantial over what is currently available. Maybe the second Rev of SR will but the current chipset seems to me to be a slight improvement on current tech.

Maybe that's why Apple didn't put that much into the MBs for this last rev.

wait wait...this drive will actually fit right? Where was that other thread with a big hard drive which turned out 3mm bigger than an average drive? Which meant it wouldn't fit in our Macbook Pros.

I agree, WD isn't the most reliable HD manufacturer out there. Both of my desktop drives i had to RMA under warranty (3 years) and received refurbished ones. Ended up selling one of them to a friend, the other is still chugging away in my desktop.

My Seagate is still holding up strong though. *knocks on wood*

Santa Rosa offers 800MHz DDR2 RAM/FSB, Robson cache, and GMA X3000 graphics.

Add my name to the list of WD drive failures.. NEVER AGAIN!

A 250GB drive in a laptop sounds just wonderful to me!! I'm living just fine with 160GB, but that is only a matter of time, of course....

Any public info about any Seagate drives above the 160GB size?

I've seen every make of drive fail. Either mine or friends.

Doesn't make me judge the makers. Everyone gets back drives sometimes. It happens.
