okay, cause there was a 300gb fujitsu 2.5" drive and it ended up being bigger than normal..
also larger drives tend to be not as reliable due to the increased
# of platters and heads and the increased mass rotating at 5400 rpm and being squeezed into a 2.5" drive. I assume this new drive uses Perpendicular recording.
I can't argue with you there. But Seagate does have the best warranty on their drive at 5 years. So, if it does fail, at least you get a new drive. Actually, come to think of it, I've had the worst luck with Maxtor drives.

unfortunately its true. I didnt find out until i saw maxtor utilities on Seagate's website.

But I think seagate is at least has a dichotomy between the two...maxtor for the cheap throw away storage and the Seagate brand name for the quality stuff. I'm sure a Seagate barracuda is not the same as an equivalent (in terms of space and speed) Maxtor.\

Nope. Most of the newer Maxtor drives are simply rebranded Seagate drives. They're not making two separate sets of drives for budget/quality. Maxtor is pretty comparably priced to the Seagate drives. The only difference is the warranty, and Maxtor drives have bumped up the warranty on some as well.
sorry for going off topic, but darn, hopefully Seagate will bring Maxtor up instead of being dragged down to maxtor's level. But you say that maxtors are now rebranded Seagates, so presumably i guess they are bringing them up.

But that drive is the one we've been talking about...read earlier posts. Its too big, physically unable to fit inside our macbook pros.
Anything higher than 9.5mm is too big.

Maxtor is going to be the value line.
Again, look up. It won't fit because it's 12.5. Plus it's 4200RPM, which Apple isn't using anymore AFAIK.
I cant find a place to order the WD 250 gb besides that one website thats selling it for $300 instead of the MSRP $200. Anyone find a reputable website selling them NOW for $200?
yeah what the deal, OWC is the only place i can find that is selling them and they are $100 over the retail price?
I can only find OWC, and it's not cheap either there. Should I really get this though, WD is, from what I read here, a little untrustworthy in the department of HD life?

Yep, it'll work fine in the MBP. Nice spot on that one, I've been checking Newegg lately for new hard drives and didn't see it. Guess I didn't even expect it to be coming out.
I picked up a Seagate 7200.2 160GB drive from Computer Giants and hopefully it'll ship soon (still haven't got confirmation yet on the order, hah).
There are also some Hybrid drives from Samsung on Newegg if anyone wants to try their hand at them. There's a 160GB 5400rpm one that looks pretty nice.
I'm thinking of buying that Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB myself. Let us know when you get it. Are you going to install it yourself? I've looked through the ifixit guide, and I'm tempted to try it. I'll probably wait to see if the MBPs are updated in the next week or two. Depending on the update, I may just upgrade mine or eBay it and buy the new one.

Oh this is looking GREAT. For only ~$70 more than a 160/5400, you can get this 250GB/5400. Oh that is wonderful!!! Me want!!
Now how long before Apple includes this drive as a BTO option?? Why do they take so long to add stuff like this? Volume purchase agreements?

The warranty is through Western Digital, not the retailer. So Newegg's warranty is the same. Unless OWC is lying about the warranty, which they have in the past.
