Soon the iPod touch will go the way of the dodo and then Apple is completely down the tubes.

I doubt it. As much as I love my 5.5G and 6G Classic iPods, if us music people abandoned Apple they wouldn't feel much of a dent. iTunes store sells DRM-free music, that slice of pie would still be there if we went.

They're into watches and teasing with TV services now (heh, and I say this as someone who loves their Pebble smart watch, too).

WE WANT OUR iPOD CLASSIC BACK!

Correction. YOU. You want the iPod classic back. You perhaps even have a few liked minded friends. But you don't represent the universal opinion.

Personally I'm glad that dinky POS is gone. The only advantage it had was storage space. But Solid state memory is catching up and soon we'll have a 256GB iPod touch.

----------

Apple stopped building the Classic because the parts were no longer available

availability wasn't the issue. Apple could keep buying them and they would keep being made. The issue is that they weren't selling as many Classics and the parts manufacturers wouldn't be able to give them as good a price. They had to make a choice between losing profit at the same retail price or raising the price and risking losing profit from a lack of sales. Just wasn't viable in the end

----------

The sad part now is that apple is back at being a purely business entity.

'back at being'. Sorry but Apple hasn't been anything but a business entity since Steve and Steve left that garage.

Yes for a while they might have seemed like they were creatives etc but that was a business decision. They went looking for a market they could tap for business and that's what they found. But it wasn't as profitable as they wanted so they made a business decision to find a new market and did via the iPhone etc and the attitude of making an OS that is essentially simplified and 'idiot proof' for the masses. Not because they truly want to change the world, that's marketing talk, but cause that's where the profit was to be found

Yes but that's the whole point we haven't got a 256GB ipod Touch yet have we? When I can purchase one of those I won't mourn the passing of the Classic. I don't see why it couldn't continue until a viable replacement has been released. If my classic dies in the mean time, I'll simply put my music on a large memory stick and leave it plugged into my car's USB port, then Apple won't have the chance to get any more of my money as I'll probably just stick with that. If they kept the classic going until at 256GB touch was released they'd keep me as a customer.

I love the iPod Classic but lets be honest, its old tech now. I had a chance to get one here in Atlanta a few weeks ago for about $95.00 for a 6th Generation model in black with 120gb of space. I backed out of the deal. Why you ask? OLD TECH. The 30 pin connector is DEAD. The spinning Hard drive is DEAD. Unless Apple will update it, I'm no longer interested in it. Its a nice conversation piece but thats really it. It hurts me to says these things but they are very true., SO LONG iPOD CLASSIC! YOU HAD A GREAT RUN! **SALUTE** :apple::rolleyes:

I WOULD LIKE TO RECANT THIS STATEMENT!

I now own a black 7th generation ipod classic 160gb model and I love it!
I cannot believe i said this statement when I did! Forgive me macrumors!

Sent from my ipod classic. ## ✌️#

Bring that beat back. Bring that beat back.

So, in ending, RiP to the classic.

I also believe that the content of music today contributed to
the departure of the classic. Don't get me wrong, some is decent
today, but the majority of it is simply GARBAGE!!

There are a lot of decent bands that don't get a sniff of radio time or mainstream publicity. If you are just talking about what is played on corporate radio, then yeah i agree that the majority is absolute garbage.

as far as this thread is concerned...i purchased a 160 ipod classic a couple months before Apple killed it. Yesterday, i ran some pants through the washer with the ipod in it. I have it sitting in rice right now, hoping that it will be brought back to life (next plan is to see if an authorized apple repair center in town can fix it for a decent price).

I have my 2nd generation ipod touch as a backup, however I would love something with a higher capacity. Unfortunately, one of the newer, higher capacity ipod touch models will not work for me as I cannot have have devices with cameras at work.

That is the dilemma I am currently facing....

If it's a late model (after Dec 2009) 160gig model you can purchase an out of warranty repair (a refurb unit) from Apple. That way you'll get a fresh new unit to keep you going for many more years. I got one and it was about $180 Australian. I imagine US price is about $150?

If you have an iPod Classic, there are two things you can do about keeping it in good stead: hire somebody to upgrade the Classic or upgrade it yourself. I had mine upgraded to 256GB SDXC and a new battery with a Wolfson DAC. Yes, it cost quite a bit of $$$$, but it is worth it. Just upgrading it to a 256SDXC and a new battery should cost around $200 or so, maybe $250.

The Classic will be missed. Apple decided that the iPod should become an iPhone without the cellular connections. That is their decision. The fact that the new iPod Touch is basically an iPhone 5s without the ability to make phone calls AND it comes with 128GB of flash memory is actually a good thing. Classics are great at one thing; the iTouch is good at multiple things. Besides, Apple wants you to use Apple Music and the App Store. Classics cannot do that.

A final point or two to the OP. Are screaming capitals - in your view - the best way to express a thread title?

Is the smallest font ever made in the history of the Universe the best way to express ANYTHING? I can hardly even SEE your posts on my 24 INCH monitor. My god man, please use a normal font size.

As for the iPod Classic, the only reasons I see any need for it at all in 2015 is for people who like to carry extremely large music libraries with them and possibly the question of battery life (i.e. my battery life on newer iPod Touches is not exactly what I think it ought to be, but then I'm not sure how long a Classic would last either. Given it used a moving hard drive, it could quite possibly be worse). If they start offering a 128GB iPod Touch, I see little reason for the existence of the Classic. The click wheel was not an improvement over a touch screen with searchable text input, after all.

The fonts changed in appearance once the forum migrated to Xenforo; anything that wasn't the default now reads a lot smaller. So much smaller that even I - visually challenged as I am - find it difficult to read. An irony indeed.

Anyway, when it was written, (and set in a size three), it was considerably easier to read; however, when dabbling with fonts on this new forum software, nowadays, I will usually use a four, and could even be persuaded to contemplate a size five.

Ah, I see. I don't know what the default font is because it's larger than 4 yet smaller than 5 on the new forum. I just typically use the default. The problem with editing on the new forum is that if you use the controls on the menu box it shows the effect in the editor and there's not "go back to default font" button so you end up with either 4 or 5 as "close as you can get". If you typed the codes by hand you could just [/font] but the editor doesn't make that easy. It used to be if you highlighted a bit of text and clicked bold, it would just bold that selected text. Now it leaves bold ON and so you have to go back and click it off. I don't call those changes improvements, but then there's been a lot of things about the new forums people haven't liked.

So, in practice, anything I posted before the migration to Xenforo - if I wrote it in TNR, size three (under the old setting) will now read rather microscopically, as though I had deliberately set it in a size more appropriate for a foot-note.

The Xenforo has changed the appearance (and sizing) of many things.

In general, in fairness, I actually find the new layout to be uncluttered and a lot easier to read than the older system was.

My understanding is that some of these changes were introduced with a view to making them (the forum) more legible on devices (such as iPhones, iPads) as a greater number of people are reading, or obtaining, their information and data from devices. Myself, I still stick to a keyboard and computer; my trusty MBA. I don't have an iPhone, don't like using the iPod Touch for writing, and never got the hang of writing on an iPad.

Just picked up a 3G iPod in stellar condition for 35$ off eBay (my favorite "vintage" iPod design). With a CF card adapter, 128GB CF card and new battery it is like new, lighter and lasts a lot longer. For less than 100$ total it's not entirely cheap but hell, it is a vintage iPod and holds all the music I have on iTunes. Can't believe it's a 12 year old device.

Seriously, I do not have time to read a 500 page dissertation on bringing the classic ipod back.

Quite honestly, I had a 160GB iPod Classic. It wasn't that great of a device. The click wheel took way to long to get thru so many songs. The only way it was usable for me was with playlists, but I didn't have time to build a 1000 playlists for every mood.

Just my .02 worth. I'd rather have a 128GB iPod Touch since it is so much easier to navigate.
I use a ipod Classic since having a physical scroll wheel meant I could drive without taking my eyes off the road.

Jobs was quick to dispose of products/parts that didn't sell or make business sense (floppy disk, CD, firewire, xServe, Newton, etc.) My personal opinion was that he was very much focused on the present and future and didn't much care about nostalgia or legacy users/compatibility. So despite the OPs ravings that Steve Jobs would be dedicated to keeping the iPod Classic, he probably would have killed it even quicker. But who knows.

I do love the numerous Apple users with the following thinking:
1 - I believe Apple should do A
2 - Apple under Tim Cook is not doing A
3 - STEVE JOBS WOULD HAVE DONE A!!!! (and yes, it must be said forcefully)

The iPod classic was great. The 5th gen iPod was my first Apple product.
However, it does not fit the current market for music. People no longer care about 1000 music in their pocket. They want 35 million music anywhere anytime (subscription).

Apple knew this pretty early on, and the iPhone becomes people's iPod. Even the iPod Touch was not ideal (due to lack of constant connectivity) and thus was marketed as a portable gaming device.

Some of the remaining market for stand alone music player would be exercise, and the shuffle/nano fits that.

I myself frequently wish for another iPod classic, and even think of buying the iPod. However, every single time I cannot justify the purchase when my iPhone can do the job just fine.

Well... I'm just one person. Certainly not the market that Apple users are, but I already have music on my Ipod (Classic). My biggest issue is I don't have connectivity when I'm driving from one town to another, as I cross barren deserts with no sign of life. Having my music locally means it'll always be available. Plus, I like how I don't have to keep paying for music that I already have. Even if I did have data connection, it still eats extra battery and data that I can save.

An iPhone still allows you having offline music.
All online subscription that I know also allow offline usage for paying users. I'm not subscribing to any mainly because none of them will ever carry the kind of music that I like.
But main reason is, modern smartphones are sufficient to be people's music playback devices, offline or online.

Modern Smartphone:

- Physical controls? No
- 160GB? No
- Dedicated, music only device? No
- Music listening without worrying about running out of battery? No

I don't understand why someone who doesn't have any interest in "having back an iPod Classic" (as per title) is posting here, really...

Regardless of your or my interest, Apple has shown their decision. They discontinued the classic.

This ^^

An Iph can do so many things, but due to how much storage you have... even with 128 GB, you can only really ever do 1 to 3 things in depth, or otherwise, "spread yourself thin".

All of these reasons why I still use an Ipod Classic. Well, I have an 80 GB hard drive, but close enough. People tend to fill up their iDevices' storage, so unless folks have it very well controlled, or swap out stuff, offloading some of the storage, functionality, and battery usage to another device can be just what's needed.
