Contrast - Light and dark, good and evil, happy and sad, up and down, life and death, hard and soft, order and chaos...

Photography loves visual and metaphorical contrast so let's see your visual interpretations of contrast.

Rules are the same as always -

· The photographs must be your own work.

· Be creative and have fun.

· You may only submit one photo per contest.

· Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

· The contest runs for a week and starts now!

· At the end of the week, last week’s winner will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.

· If the winner is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline for close, then a vote will be carried out to select a winner. This will be based on the number of "likes" each image has. In the event of a draw, the second place winner from the previous week will choose the tiebreaker.

· The 1st place winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

· Please update the Weekly Contest Master List when you post a new contest.

I look forward to all your entries.
Have Fun!

I trust that the topic has encouraged folks to spend some time thinking about contrast in a pic and that some awesome entries will soon be uploaded.

I trust, I hope, I dunno :D

Thanks to everyone that was brave enough to enter a kinda vague concept of a theme. You all hit the mark.
Side note - Flickr is still not being nice (as of tonight) but it hasn’t kept me from seeing 100% versions of pics linking over.

Darmok N Jalad - Bonus points for going first - Thanks! There’s nice leading lines, contrast and detail in the bench slats.

deep diver - The light trace abstractions are really cool. Nice.

Apple fanboy - A classic black & white, rule-of-thirds compo with leading lines, fog, tonal contrast and sharpness/softness…very nice.

Foogoofish - A beautiful long exposure waterfall shot.

Hughmac - IR done really well with well rendered foliage and bonus swimming geese.

mollyc - A really nice motion study contrasting with static objects.

tizeye - Full-size viewing reveals the alligator just beyond the bench-sitter’s calm perception .

Somepix - Winter vs. all the other seasons .

Laird Knox - Small aperture stars and a beautiful tonal range, nice composition, contrails and a wide range of textures...

jagolden - “Lots of color contrast” - Indeed :D.

AllegyDoc - So many textures .

And the winners...

Third places go to AllergyDoc, mollyc and Foogoofish.
Second places go to jagolden, Hughmac, deep diver and Apple fanboy (my runner-up first place choice).
First place goes to Laird Knox.

Thanks again to everyone sharing their pics! It seems that this contest subject was a little intimidating given the low number of entries. I apologize for limiting the level of engagement this time around. It was the opposite of my intent.

I look forward to Laird's contest subject for next week,
Ed

Great feedback! Thank you for the coveted second place.
No need to apologise for challenging subjects. It’s good to push the boundaries. I like how we always get so many interpretations on a theme.
Well done everyone and a well deserved win for @Laird Knox

I sent a PM to Laird Knox. If he doesn't respond in the next 24 hours then the pleasure and pain go to AFB.

I've spent many a happy shift around Canvey, Benfleet, Leigh on Sea, Southend and Thorpe Bay :)

Cheers :)
