Alexander.Of.Oz

Tremendous sunset and color. I like the placement of the sun in the frame. Details on the palm trees are very sharp. My only wish is that the rooftop didn't obstruct the view of the sky and palm trees, otherwise nice image.

Needfx

I'm glad you didn't change the image because I did like this. The evenly spaced frames rounds out the rule of thirds nicely. The placement of the young woman between two shots is interesting as if she's pondering the two or is caught in a dilemma about them. Which leaves us as the viewer caught in the same gaze or dilemma. Self reflexive. Well done.

AlexH

Great profile on the fisherman. He's either getting ready or finishing up with his activity. Good job keeping a bit of the sky and cloud details. The shadows cast by the railing are nice and he light beading off the hot spots in the water are nice as well. IMO if the image was cropped tighter to exclude the post on the left it would hone the image further. Otherwise very good capture.

MacRy

One of my favorites from the get go. The hidden one point perspective give this shot a downhill feel as if the viewer is being draw into it. Details on the travelers are exquisite and tells many stories. Close examination of the people reveal Mackie lines along their legs and suitcases. The woman on the left with the pony tail and the man on the right talking on his phone- lots of good details. The vignette adds to the feeling of motion inwards with the rest of the people. Excellent.

deep diver

The ocean always has good opportunities for silhouettes. The young man looking down at his feet in the waves and sand is possibly wondering if he should take off his flip-flops. I do like the reflection of his legs in the water. If he was looking off camera right I would've liked to see more of his profile. Nice image. Was it the ocean or Lake Erie?

kenoh

The deep blue sky contrasting against the red-orange horse head is striking. The photographer is in the pose that so many other digital photogs are doing these days, looking at the back of the camera! :) The image could be cropped horizontal to cut out railing may have made it more dynamic. Great color!

anotherscotsman

Wonderful story in this shot! A mother with her young son (if I'm correct) enjoying a fireworks show. The deep black all around could be what the boy is feeling - as if nothing else at this moment matter except his mom and the view of the sky whatever else and all the distractions have faded away. Technically very nice deep blacks and contrast.

gaswerks

Nice color toning, looks like an antique or cream-tone. I like the balance between the figure and the paintings. She looks as if she's reading the inscription about the exhibit. Nice image.

tomnavratil

Great image! The silhouetted bells have just a touch of gold cast from the temple beyond them. You can see fine details and the rim of some of the bells, nice shadow and light going on there. I do like how the is a little kick of bright blue at the edges balancing the gold. Nice framing as well. Striking image. nice work.

Aloko

The red is vivid and the performer seems to be in between areas of light. The framing is spacious and the vignette rounds the image nicely. I'm not sure if she's about to sing or just dancing/moving to the music. Captivating image.

NeGRit0

What I find interesting about this image is the play between the bird in flight to the right of center and the helicopter. Two completely different flying objects. The foreground of the building and deck is completely without background and it lets the details pop. Nice sharp image.

jkramerbob

This is a different angle of a familiar subject. The cropped nature of this almost makes it an abstract. I do like how the sunlight the reflecting off the top of the structure revealing some details. Cool image. Taken from a helicopter?

Ish

I like the contemplative nature of this image. The little bit of the motion blur is one of my favorite parts. Its he going to or coming from? I think it would have been better if the face was in focus instead of the landscape to let me concentrate on the man as the subject.

okjoe

What I like about this image is the jagged edge of the shoreline, it kind of leads the viewer deeper into the picture. The lady in the picture is a little bit of a mystery as if she's waiting to be photographed. I would like to have seen a few more details from the far shoreline.

zaphodtheprez

Stunning image of one my favorite cities where did a bit of growing up in my twenties. It looks to be a long focal length lens crushing the distances here. The fog between each layer of city skyline and land masses add to that cut out appearance so many landscape photographers lust after. The color toning is quite nice as well with the slate blue and beige. Very nice image.

JoeRito

The pinpoints of ancient light against a deep blue sky are always comforting. I do like the foreground of trees. I would have let the shutter drag for a few minutes to get some star trails.

filmbufs

Nice details in the dark. I like the cropped nature of this image placing the gargoyle just below center giving room for the spire. The detail of the window in the lower right corner and some of the small roofs at the base of the spire are my favorite points of this picture.

Dubadai

A rainy night. I like the reflection of the man's legs in the intermittent pools of water. It took me a minute to realize that there was another set of legs on the left. This looks like a screenshot of a noir or spy film. Cool image.

Apple Fanboy

Wow the flames! The subject of this image is of course the flames and laws of nature keeping this balloon in flight. I like the bit of tumultuous clouds just below the basket. If it weren't for the tree in the foreground I would have thought this was taken from another balloon... or a hill top? getting a little vertigo from this. :) Cool shot.

Indydenny

I like the face that you kept the reflection of the red sun in color as well while desaturating everything else. Looks like a great place to play golf. Its either early morning or late afternoon teeing off of the 18th. Interesting shot.

Hughmac

I like the clouds visible behind the candle. I wish the top of the circle was still included in the shot, and this would be a good candidate for a square cropping. I'm left wondering who or what that candle is burning for.

rx7dude

I really like the wide format of this image. The balance of the three figures referencing the rule of thirds is working well here. The is another group of three to the far left which is pretty interesting. I also see a triangle from the sun down to the for right figure. Nice framing and nice deep blue sky.

Thanks to everyone for participating! I was giving the images an honest critique and I hope I didn't ruffle anyones feathers. This was the first time I've had to comment on so many images.

Here are my picks

1st: anotherscotsman
2nd: zaphodtheprez
3rd: MacRy

Honorable mention: Aloko, Apple Fanboy, needfx, tomnavratil

My choice for first was based on the extra level of story in the image which was above and beyond just silhouettes. Technical considerations rounded out the rest.

Thanks again for participating. :)

Congrats to the winners. There were so many nice, striking images this week and so many people could have won. After seeing so many striking images, I had thought about skipping this contest. Then I realized I had made a pinky promise with @tomnavratil to enter if he did. :)

Good job on the critique and judging, @obeygiant, especially for your first time. That had to be tough and you picked a mighty fine group. As for my Notre Dame picture, I actually brought the details down in the cathedral to give a more silhouette appearance, something I wasn't sure if I should have done or not.

Congratulations on the win, anotherscotsman, and well done to the other finalists - the top 3 pretty much followed what would have been my own choices.
Great judging under difficult circumstances, with so many good photos to comment on.

I chopped the chimney of the lantern off because I thought it detracted from the photo - maybe I should have left it in?

Cheers :)

Staggeringly good images this week. Well done everyone and a well deserved win.

@tomnavratil see, you were a contender! So keep at it mate.

On my image it was the colours that drew me to it but I needed the rail for the stable door effect. I was playing with longer exposures and was really happy with the set if images I got.

Well done everyone and onto the next.

Well done! Great judging. One thing. On MacRys you mentioned Mackie Lines. Despite googling them I dont follow what they are. Can you maybe explain them a bit more? Sounds interesting is all.

I'm wondering if they are the small ghosting lines present around the people?

Many thanks Obeygiant - I'm over the moon with my first win of any WPC ! Pretty much one of those lucky timing shots but I felt it portrayed the child's focus of attention on the fireworks and the shared parent/child interaction. I thought the swathes of empty black space helped provide a clear focus of attention or at least just looked good.

Great entries as always with WPC with my own personal favourites being zaphodtheprez, MacRy (always love the candid transport system shots) and applefanboy. I'm travelling at the moment but will set a new contest later this evening (if I can figure out how to do it).

Thanks again for the great feedback.
