I had assumed that the competition was closed - the dates suggested that this was the case - and thus, had stuck some 'likes' on a number of the (excellent) entries.

I'm not sure that adding up the number of "likes" is an appropriate way of arriving at podium placings in the weekly competition - and that fact that this - the number of "likes" might have served to have (subtly) influenced whoever was judging that week's competition (or, a given week's competition) is one of the main reasons that I have had reservations about sticking a 'like' on an entry while the competition ran.
Thus, mea culpa.
My understanding is that if the person who won the previous competition, and set the topic for the current competition isn't available, the runner-up to the previous week's competition is notified and consequently steps into the vacant spot and proceeds to judge the entries.
However, I would be more than happy to elaborate a little on why I like some of the entries, should you wish.
I propose @Scepticalscribe judge this one!
