I also have tonnes of failures.
But this is my interpreation of this weeks theme. Going to a wooden outhouse in the morning in northern Finland. The view was amazing, but sitting there doing my business was a failure.

I don't have many failed pictures where the failure ended up having some artistic value. One of the very few would maybe this one, where I tried to get a clean "zoom" effect, but the whole thing ended up very shaky.

Don't get me wrong. It was very funny. It also hit home with me because I was going to bow out for the same reason. Now you have forced my hand, but I think i have something.

Schull Run is a tributary to the Allegheny River at Emlenton, PA.

Everything about this was wrong.

I was on my way home after a working weekend out of state. I was tired and then got really irritable because of the particularly bad condition of the unpaved back woods roads I had to take to get to this spot. I shot this on manual and forgot to change the shutter speed when I stopped down the aperture, I put on too dark of an ND filter, and there is light bleed because I was too lazy to cover the eyepiece.

I played with this in PSE as an experiment to see how much I could bring out of a really bad image. I neither hoped for nor expected anything. The gold tones are from the sunlight coming through the viewfinder.

Apparently I didn’t read this the first time I saw it, but I grew up in western Pennsylvania and went to camp several times at Westminster Highlands in Emlenton for church youth group in the early 90s.

There are a lot of very cool things to shoot there. I travel to DuBois once a month and will stop in Emlenton on the way back if I have enough time to shoot. A few months ago, I posted a picture of one of the tunnels on the Allegheny River Trail. It was kind of spooky being in a train tunnel even if there are no more trains there.

Where in PA did you grow up?

I grew up in New Wilmington (Westminster College), started at PSU, and graduated from Grove City College. My dad grew up in New Castle, and my mom's family was from Franklin and Oil City. :)

I grew up in Philly and graduated PSU in 1977. State College is still one of my favorite places anywhere.
I've never gotten off I-80 at Franklin and Oil City. There are two excellent paved multipurpose trails that intersect near there. One is the Allegheny River Trail, but I cannot remember the name of the other. One of my co-workers has a weekend home there and says the cycling is particularly good. I know that the riding on the Emlenton end of the trail is spectacular.

So, lets get this puppy going. Sorry for the delay.

To kick it off, I felt mollyc was right at one point that the failures were not as much as failures, but I did not want to intervene and somewhat affect the entries being put in.

In any case, winners are chosen on these two merits.

accidental-ity (sic)
impressionism-ality (sic)
overall failurism (sic)

Evidently, failure is in the eye of the beholder, but I am looking for eye-gauging ones from this.

@kenoh
I don't remember your previous entry, but this is definitely more memorable, pleasing, and a failure.

@BigMcGuire
I believe it barely qualifies unfortunately, it feels almost too properly exposed & framed to be a failure :(

@deep diver
Unless you'd mention it was a failure, I wouldn't have known :( Love the cinemascope crop

@Alexander.Of.Oz
Again, another barely noticeable a failure :(

@Darmok N Jalad
I think your camera was high when you took it into the aquarium. Yes, a failure!

@Donka
I understand the circumstance of your failure, and it is justifiably a hangable picture, but unless it was explained to us, we would not know it was a failure :( . Beautiful picture.

@mollyc
This week's winner. Nuff said!

@Hughmac
A failure not of your own making, and in need of explanation really, as the contrast in direction of the geese against the duck could be intentional & anticipated by the photographer. :(

@oblomow
Your failure failed at failing as it conveyed your actual failure of choosing to go there, in the morning. :(

@someoldguy
Barely noticeable failure, in need of explanation :( Nice detail though

@Janichsan
A failure indeed. I might have processed a bit more to add to the Jamazing Failure aspect tbh

@Apple fanboy
Another failure indeed, but frankly, one of the first pictures I ever posted on flickr, back in 2014 or something, was an intentional such picture, so I hope you are not pulling my leg here.

The image that resonated with me was mollyc's by far, hence leaving with the chicken dinner from this contest.

I will not make any 2nd & 3rd placements, but will honorably mention Kenoh's, Darmok's & Apple fanboy's images.

On to the next & thanks for playing along!

Oh, wow, thank you! Such an individual and personal kind of challenge; I liked having to think outside the box. :)

@Darmok N Jalad asked what the photo actually was; I thought I'd used it as a POTD, but in hindsight, I maybe did not. Anyway, I've been practicing shooting through a copper tube to get some interesting flare. I haven't quite got it figured out reliably, but I will say that it's pretty easy to slip focus and grab it on the ring itself, rather than the intended subject, which is what happened with my "failure." Here is a "good" shot just a few frames later, and what I was actually going for. But I loved the colors and mood of the failure. Certainly not frame worthy, but something about it does speak to me.

I will be back later with a new challenge. Thanks again!

Hooray for honorable mention! I guess I missed it on the deer and skateboard thing. Bummer.

Congrats on your spectacular failure! I did like the effect as well.

Well done everyone! Thanks for the honourable mention.
100% accidental take. I was trying to shoot a squirrel or something at the time.

Barely noticeable to you , big disappointment to me . This was an attempt at a 17 (IIRC) image focus stack using my MP-e and a set of focusing rails . The back of the object came out great , but the closer areas didn't . I was shooting at (again IIRC )around 3X , @f11 , and was using 1 rotation of the lead screw on the rails , which is 1mm. (.040 +/-) between shots , thinking that I've gotta have enough DOF to merge everything into one , gloriously detailed image . Not so , should have read the booklet that came with the lens and obtained the REAL depth of field , rather than using the image on my tethered laptop's screen and eyeballing it . According to the manual , actual DOF at these settings is .352mm or about .014" . Not even close . Next time should work better , I pulled off one of the lead screw knobs and milled 4 equally spaced indices in the knob , and reattached it . This'll give me .25mm , .010+/- advance/ index mark . That should fix things next time . Now just gotta find a willing subject and some time .

Oh, my gosh!!!!! Small world..... I was born in Meadville and we lived in New Castle for a year or so before moving to Ohio. My grandparents, who lived in Meadville, had a cottage on Conneaut Lake, where I spent many happy summers during my childhood and teen years..... And now, Mollyc, it seems as though both of us are in the Washington DC area!

Sorry for the OT comments but couldn’t resist when seeing some familiar town names......
