Right, I am bathing the little ones and getting them to sleep then I will draw this shindig to a conclusion. Watch this space. You have another hour or two before Laird Knox slides a cheeky one in as the shutters are coming down.... we are officially into golden hour people... get em in... last chance...

Big headed lavender.
It has a proper name on the tag, but it's raining!

Well done! Lavandula stoechas (or stouts according to the spell checker) or French Lavender. :)

Golden hour??? It's been as black as the ace of spades out there since about 7pm. We've had black clouds, thunder, lightning, torrential rain. Glad I live on the top of a hill!

Haven't killed them yet either! Mind you I haven't repotted them since they came home from the garden centre either yet! Need some gravel for drainage.

I was thinking the same thing. I live a few miles outside of Dunstable and the police had to close the town this afternoon because it flooded......shame it doesn't flood more often ;)

OK, firstly, thank you for a fantastic turn out for my comp this week. Some very very good entries this week.

Before getting into individual comments, kudos to @Hughmac for seriously stepping up your game this week. A fantastic image indeed.

So the week kicked off with a bang as @RedOctober lost the comps cherry by posting a beautiful fungal quadrant. Fantastic, spot on lighting and a nice crop showing superb texture. Is it the turbines of a jet engine or a lovely juicy breakfast treat? Only criticism would be what seems to be (but you never know with mushroom texture) the over smoothness of the stalk.

Next out of the gate @Robotti with grains of rice. I nice wee pile of rice with great detail and some nice shading. Nice and close and showing a randomness that adds some tension to the image.

Hot on the heels of Robotti came @MacRy with a stonking crop of a Dandelion ready for blowing in the wind. Superb use of depth of field and no doubt handheld as we know he is hardcore. Such amazing detail. My only recommendation - if I may be so bold - would be a more feathered vignette and maybe a tad of a sat boost.

Next we move onto @Hughmac, a great image with superb depth of field capture and a lovely blacked out background. Nice and vivid with great catchlights in the droplets. On the "jealous I didnt take it" scale? a strong 10!

Nuts? yes, @dwfaust, it is getting nuts in here. So far it has been an organic feats of delights and here we continue with some cashews. Nice texture, I like the effect you have gone for in post with, is it a purple shadow cast? Nice arrangement though maybe if not being rude, maybe not cropping the bottom one off as I like the contrast of the smooth internal texture against the exteriors.

Moving out of the organics into the man made, @Alexander.Of.Oz rocks us with an architectural wonder reminding me of the building in Singapore shaped like the Durian fruit which thankfully doesnt smell like one! Nice uniformity and lines, exposure up to the usual Alex of down under standards and giving a nice feeling of depth. Nicely done.

I was over the moon on this one @rx7dude, playing to my youthful astronaut aspirations, the main stage boosters of a Saturn 5 maybe? oh yes! fabulous capture of shadows and details among lovely tonality. Beautiful example of engineering a true wonder of semi-modern science.

In contrast to something that is immediately recognisable, to something not, @CmdrLaForge brings in what can either be an electron microscope image of the surface of a nickel, or it is the texture of the end of a piece of wood, or it is tiny flowers densly packed together I really cannot work it out but I do know it is a picture I could stare at for hours trying to work it out. Pray tell. Nice tonality, nice sharpness and great intrigue.

Next @inkmich transports us back to the 1950s (I think) to the time when Cadillacs were glorious automobiles with smooth, long never ending voluptuous curves like a favourite pinup of that same vintage. A lovely capture of white wall tires maybe attached to a classic Eldorado, something Jimmy Cagney would be proud of, a thing of beauty.

Contrasts galore to be had when @pmxperience breaks the nostalgia with a similar conditioned games console I imagine, afterall why else would we get to see such a great capture of the inner beating heart of a console. Playing to my geek mindset pulling me from my love of cars, a great image of modern technology meeting the brief nicely in giving me detail that paints the picture for me. Nice.

Coming into the home stretch and we get @needfx playing a substitue in the second half, playing a crowd pleaser image of a Carrera, playing straight to my heart, a beautiful image of my favourite car, one I dream of owning one day, with an image of sublime tonality and added intrigue of the journey ahead. fantastic depth of field and an worthy exchange for the EggPlant it replaced.

After a brief foray into my passions, we are returned with a blinder of a Lavender image from @Apple fanboy. Such a wonderful capture and such beautiful details. Maybe a bit of a warm glow or a golden hour colour make over would make it seem warmer but it is just Perfectly Peachy the way it is. ;-)

So this brings me to the end of my judging this week, and it is time to choose my line up for the podium finish. Once again, a fantastic line up and some excellent entries. So here we go.

3rd place - @needfx
2nd place - @Hughmac
1st place - @RedOctober

Thank you for the turn out guys, it was a pleasure to enjoy your images this week. Now over to the winner.

Well done to the winners and for all the great feedback Ken.
Some great images here. I was sure you'd have picked Needfx's beetle shot! Apart from it being a great shot, I know you a big fan.

Lol... had to hold myself back, it was a clear shoe in but we have to widen the mind and consider all angles but yes... it is beautiful... oh one day if my numbers come in. Until then I can admire them from afar.

Excellent job, everyone... and @kenoh, you did a difficult job well, judging a some really good entries.

I appreciate the input and comments on my photo - and you were not rude at all suggesting less cropping... I tend to over-crop sometimes, and your point was received as good advice for a photog n00b.

Congrats to @RedOctober, as well as the place finishers.

Come to Phoenix where it's currently 43° (109° F) if you want to experience "cooked". o_O

Yep. Worked in Delhi for a few weeks once at 46 degrees so forgive me as I decline to take you up on that. Thing is you guys are used to that so you have a way to deal with it. We don't as it is rare it is this hot so we don't have AC or anything...

Good image and remember it is easier to edit than to create in the first place. In other words, it is easy for us to look at it and critique, than it is for you to take the image in the first place. Good entry well done and keep at it. I am no better than you, I just have different things I over do... such as lusing after porsches!

To say I'm pleased is an understatement !! especially when judged against such great photos.
Thank you :D
Congrats to RedOctober and needfx for superb entries :) and to everyone else, who all kept the bar high.

With the weather being what it has been lately, I had to run out into the rain and bring some foliage indoors, being careful not to disturb the raindrops, and placed a leaf in a small container of water against a black fleece for background. Got in as close as I could, a little bit of bounce flash, and I was surprised how well it came off.

Cheers :)

Great feedback as ever Ken. Well done to the winners. I really liked needfx's shot this week - but I'm also biased as I've always wanted a 911.

You're right Ken - it was hand held. Tripods....pfffft.

Thanks mate. Tried to mix it up a bit, make it sound like a joined up story through them. Reminded me of top of the pops counting down the top 10... - no? just me then... ok, back in my cage... :)

lol @kenoh for several aspects of your notes & feedback & thanks for the nod, even though biased.
I didn't know you and @MacRy liked this car so much.
Much lol @Apple fanboy for naming it a beetle.

Congrats @RedOctober & @Hughmac !!!

@inkmich , thanks for your kind words, no need to be pb&j. I just saw the car sitting there, it had drizzled, had my cam & 1.2 (back then) and took some guerrila pics before being spotted. This is the only one I liked at the time. PP not much either othen than some clarity maybe and making it black & white.

I will recheck again to see if I can raise some blood pressures around here.

Lol... there is a definite theme to the car choices on my Flickr page. I adore 911s. Especially the 993 Turbo which is so so expensive! a 1995 model costs the same money as a brand new one today! A true design legend. My brother in law is a specialist independent mechanic and he has a lot of classic Porsches in his garage so it is like a kid in a candy store when I go see him. I dont know why but Ferraris and Lamborghinis are nice but not electrifying the way a classic 993 gets me hot under the collar. Alas with two daughters, the need for four real seats in a car will mean I won't be getting my dream any time soon.

Glad you liked the comments. Tried to spice it up a bit and get some humour in there - albeit my weird humour...
