Well, after a slow start, the entries piled on in the past day. Thanks to everyone who participated! A lot of varied entries here.

I had in my head a specific kind of image; I was not expecting quite so many city lights images. I wanted everyone to interpret the theme in their own way without my guidance, but the night scenes really kind of caught me off guard. 🙂 I was really looking for LIGHT filled images, not dark images with light bulbs, which is what a lot of these are. They are all pretty, don't get me wrong, just not what my goal was for this challenge. But I do appreciate you all participating and thinking in your own interpretation. 🥳

But here we go into the judging. Standard disclaimer, these are my thoughts only and should not affect your photographic journey whether positive or negative. ❤️

@akash.nu okay, so this one definitely surprised me, but in a good way! Natural night light! I love it. Would definitely love to see these in person sometime, I just have to get over the notion of being cold. 🙂 I like the human element tucked in the corner.

@Allyance well, even though a night scene wasn't really what I was thinking, you get a bonus point for a film image. I can't imagine trying to shoot a night scene like this on film. Really fun image.

@TheYayAreaLiving still in the night scenes, a bit similar to Allyance's, although vastly different technology. My nitpick with this is that the horizon line is crooked and would be a better image if it were rotated counterclockwise to straighten it.

@cthompson94 Funny how so many of you choose night time to focus on light. The blue light on the large creature makes for a very mysterious image. I do feel like the focus here is more on the statue than the light itself.

@Strider64 a lovely minimal image. Would perhaps like to see a bit more detail in the jar of the candle.

@someoldguy ahh...a bit closer to what I was after. Unfortunately, for me, this is more a story about fog rather than about light, but a lovely image nonetheless.

@Jumpthesnark aha! Some actual light play here. A lovely and dramatic image. The helicopter adds an ominous feel to the photo.

@oblomow several different lights in this image; as pointed out later in this thread, the image should have been flipped, which would have made it stronger.

@Snowlover I love the backlight! We are just getting into fall here and I love to take photos of backlit leaves. I love the bokeh shapes in the background.

@Janichsan this is a really intriguing image. I've played a couple of puzzle games over the years (Bring you Home, Love You to Bits) and this really looks like a scene they would have used with clues in it to solve a puzzle. I really like this. Would love just a bit more details brought up though.

@Hughmac First off, I hope your puppers are better! A lovely sunset image, full of light and with great detail retained in the foreground rocks. Well done.

@Clix Pix I know you love your abstract images, not surprising you posted one for this challenge. The rainbow colors are really pretty, but to me this is a story more about reflections, rather than light. I also would have cloned or cropped that little wooden bit off the left.

@NameRequired Another dramatic image. The chromatic aberration around the moon is a bit distracting; a conversion to pure bw would have fixed that. But I love the soft streaks emanating from the sun.

@yey365 thanks for joining us! Love the colors here and the soft rays at the top of the frame.

@souko Backlight and a sunset! I love the red leaves and the three dimensional quality.

@Karnicopia Yes! I love the sunburst and the shadow play of all the lines. I'd personally lighten up the bottom right a bit, but what a fun image.

@OldMacs4Me beautiful colors. I'm always impressed with the way you make your more basic camera work so well. A fun composition.

@lkalliance Really fun colors here too; it reminds me sort of a digital Spirograph.

@skidu So this one really stopped my scroll. It is is really lovely; the composition and light here really hits the mark for me on what I was hoping to see.

@mtbdudex well, I think you must have swapped photos, and your new one isn't showing for me. I really liked your bicycle photo, but your description doesn't match that now, and since I can't see any photo, I can't really say much more.

@Ryan1524 a really lovely sunset image. I've never seen a sunset I don't love.

@dwfaust unfortunately you missed the cutoff for entries, but such a sweet and tender moment.

@tizeye well, you also missed the cutoff, but a great photo from a unique vantage point.

Okey dokey, here concludes my assessment. Really, so happy so many of you ultimately participated. ❤️

Third place: akash.nu

Second place: souko AND mtbdudex

First place: skidu

Thanks for the first place, just happened to stumble upon this thread yesterday after my morning walk - wasn't aware macrumours had such a strong photography community :) - is there any particular format I need to follow when creating a new thread? Also when shall the start day be?

PS @mtbdudex it's a shame your photo wasn't displaying correctly for the OP ( the sunrise/bike still shows for me) really great image, i love the highlights on the wheels and the atmospheric fog.

Interesting theme and I am sure very difficult to judge. More than a few great entries. Loved viewing them all!

Thanks for the kind words. Now that I am retired I use basic cameras by choice. Since that was 2007 it was the Canon Powershot A550. Prior to 2002 I made my living in photography for many years. Before that I cut my teeth with a 4x5 Linhof field camera. In the early years of the digital era, price was a huge consideration. Now that I can afford much more expensive cameras I just prefer using a camera that is simple enough that I can concentrate on the image rather than managing the gear. Plus I am old enough that weight and bulk have become huge considerations. Still if someone comes out with a digital Graflok back for that old Linhof (that costs less than a new car), I sure will be tempted.

Congrats @skidu! Check the first post in the thread, I think copy-pasting the rules will help. Also this will help, it's the master list wiki of previous contest topics. When you post the new thread with the new contest, remember to add it there. I haven't done one of these contests before, so I may be missing something, but I think that's it.

Also thanks @mollyc for this contest & topic!

Oh, @mtbdudex I have no idea why your image wasn't showing for me...It just gave me the little box of a broken photo image. But, knowing that you did NOT swap it out, I've slotted you into a tie for second place, because I really loved it.

Yes, we are a lot of very talented (and somewhat opinionated) photographers. welcome! I see Jumpthesnark beat me to the explanation, but you now get the honor of creating and judging the next one week challenge! Pick a theme, make a new post, and let the entries come in. 🙂

Couldn’t agree more with the judging. That shot from skidu definitely left my jaw hanging.

All of the shots in this competition are amazing.

Also, thanks for the safe podium there mollyc and yes it was super cold. I think around -35°C, wish I captured it at that time. My feet and fingers were frozen even being in a snowsuit wearing snowshoes.

fun contest, I loved the variety of entries ..... good judging feedback ...

I almost submitted this Astro image instead , as there was a dull light in back of me that over 20sec painted the trees and camper such they were visible under the Milky Way .. that’s my pop up camper
And yes, your eyes saw the Milky Way almost like it was here as this was dark sky country

Whew! Safe again! When the topic was announced for this competition I thought, "we'll be seeing lots of literal interpretations," and sure enough.....! Many years ago in a PHT 101 class when we had the assignment of "Light" as the topic, there were lots of photos of holiday lights, neon lights, and even one of just an unlit lightbulb! Light is all around us and yet sometimes it can be elusive, hard to capture in its essence......

I was surprised, too, at how many last-minute entries there were this time. Wow! Some really stellar entries. I had fun experimenting with the sunlight and a couple of prism objects just to see what would happen. Without something catching the light, bending it, shaping it, playing with it, there would be no reflections.....

I have to chuckle at your suggestion that I either clone or crop out that little wooden bit. I spent a lot of time trying to decide what to do about that -- take it out or leave it in?! Wavered back-and-forth on that.... Finally decided to leave it in simply because the entire abstract image in and of itself is weird anyway, so why not have a tiny piece of what looks real in there? LOL!

Thanks for a fun and challenging competition this past week!

I was really thinking sunbursts or sunflares, although I have seen some really great images of a light post illuminating a solitary subject, often with snow or rain, so something like that was what I was thinking for artificial light, where you get a sort of cone shape of light around the subject.

To me the cityscape images were about the story of a city at night, not about light.
