The 12.9" is fantastic for sheet music for the piano. It's big enough to use in landscape mode showing two pages at a time plenty legibly. That use case alone is why I have the big beast. Doesn't hurt for watching shows while cooking and doing dishes, either, with that big bright display. Of course, I barely touch most of the other features. It would be interesting to see if there was a market for a lightweight, large size tablet, not superpowered, meant primarily for media consumption and not as a "pro" content creation type device loaded with expensive tech.

The bigger screen real estate seems like a one-way move for most. I moved to 12.9 with the 1st gen, and have the miniLED gen now, but 18 months back I bought an iPad mini just for reading purposes and found I never used it, as I would always reach for the big boy even when reading. So I sold it second-hand. The 12.9 is my favorite device. I use it more than my phone. It's great to have a big, beautiful window into the world. I'd probably buy an even bigger one if it existed.

If it’s too heavy, lifting weights will help improve strength.
This has always been and always will be a silly comment. It feels heavy to many people due to the amount of force that such an object with a large surface area puts on the wrist, especially when being held in certain positions (like holding with one hand from the bottom corner) for long periods of time. It's just not as comfortable to hold for extended periods as a one pound 10-11" tablet or the 0.7lb mini. To belittle that with condescension and insults about needing to 'lift weights' adds no value to the discussion.

Disagree, people that go on about the weight of iPads/iphone must really struggle with everyday life, there would heaps of things you lift or carry that is heavier Lol.

It needs to be very small and light if you hold a device in one hand. You hold the 12.9 like a clipboard. Knees or legs are also useful when sitting. I think the iPhone is the only sized device you can hold in one hand over a longer time period. Perhaps the mini but I have not tested it. I have tested 10-11 inch and they get too heavy for one hand use.

My mother-in-law saw my 4th Gen 12.9” and wanted one, so I gave her mine and replaced it with a 5th Gen. It’s my favorite tech device of all time, bar none.

The problem is likely not about carrying or lifting, it is more about holding a device like the 12.9” iPad for extended periods of time. This is also an issue - but to a much lesser degree - with the 11” iPad. Similarly, the Mini is much easier/more comfortable to hold - again for an extended period of time - than the 11”. And, a phone - even if it is a 6.8” sized one - is much easier to hold and use for an extended period of time that the Mini.

Again, it’s not a problem of lifting and/or carrying, it’s a matter of holding the device for long periods of time. This is addition to the convenience factor that each of these sizes of devices afford.

don't be melodramatic, its not a barrow full of bricks
It's heavy-ish to be sure. This mini-LED gen is heavier than the prior gen (I've owned every gen of the 12.9) to a small but noticeable degree. If you're carrying it in the Smart Keyboard case, it seems as heavy as my 14" MacBook.

Which is why I typically carry it in the smart folio. My favorite device, frankly. There are so many situations where you want a bigger window on the world to show somebody a map or a picture, or study something closely. When we're playing Uno at the table, we have it up keeping score on a spreadsheet, and so on. I use it constantly at home, and my family is quite used to seeing it tucked under my arm as I'm walking around the house to the next destination where I'll probably be using it.

Same, my point is who stands for long periods holding a 12.9" iPad, sitting it's on your lap or on a desk/table, and don't need a wheel barrow to move it around the house lol.
Even still I can hold it one hand and use it, or rest on palm to use if standing.
A kindle is about the only screen I hold in hand for long periods.

This is the factor most people are missing when mentioning the weight.

We’re not talking about holding the thing for extended periods with just your thumb on the bezel.

Placing it on the palm is a comfortable, and logical alternative, which allows for extended periods of one-handed use.

I agree with those who find silly the comments like lift weights if you can't hold the 12.9 etc. I lift weights every day, and my favorite iPad size is the 12.9 (and I have the 14.6 Tab s8 ultra). Some people would never consider large tablets because they hold their tablets for hours (with their thumb on the bezels) either in portrait for reading or in landscape for watching movies. I would never hold a tablet for hours to watch a movie (I use folios, tablet stands or kickstands for that), but who am I to judge people who do....
So it has nothing to do with being weak and strong, it's just the personal way people use their devices, but unfortunately these silly comments are posted regularly when talking about iPad weights...

After more than a decade of owning 9.7” followed by 11” iPads, I recently bought a 5th Gen 12.9 pro for my mother. When it arrived, I played around with it a bit and simply fell in love with it. So much so that I went and bought myself one as well.

The extra screen real estate with that MiniLED display is gorgeous (despite the blooming issues we all know about), and it is so much easier to look at and type upon using the on-screen keyboard.

My fears were that it would be too big, however it turns out those fears were completely unfounded. I am of larger build and have no problems holding it with one hand to use with the pencil. I also bought the MK and I’m now wondering if my M1 MBA has become redundant, although i‘l likely keep it in the short term at least.

I had the MK with my 11“ 2020 Pro, but the size of the 12.9 one is so much easier to type on. While size preference will always be a personal choice, I will never go back to the 11” model again.
I love my iPad Pro as well, and it's really only some limitations coming from iPadOS itself that's keeping me from retiring my laptop. Hopefully Apple finally unleashes the iPad this year.

I find it hilarious when people get uppity and 'disagree' when anyone says they find it uncomfortable to hold a 12.9 inch glass slab. How dare people have preferences and like something that they don't!

I was thinking about that actually, mainly for using in bed and on the lounge. I’m still in two minds about it and I’m not really having any difficulty using the 12.9 in either of those scenarios, so i might just sit off it…for now anyway..
I have the 12.9“ with the magic keyboard, and actually appreciate the keyboard magnetic stand when lounging or using the iPad in bed. The stand holds it perfectly, and no arm fatigue from holding it up. Even the Mini gets long in the hand after a while; I was considering getting one, but having a mainly hands off large iPad is the best set-up for me.

I'm three years of 12.9 and while the iPad mini would be awesome, I'd only have one as an accessory to the 12.9. which seems excessive, so I'm going to stick with just my 12.9. but I'd never consider an iPad size that isn't the mini or max.
My thoughts exactly, the Mini has been calling my name for months, but I know the smart thing to do is just continue using my 12.9 w/magic keyboard as I have been for 3 years. I could try and justify replacing my Kindle with a Mini, but I know myself, and I wouldn’t read, I’d jump on Twitter or MacRumors lol. My 12.9 replaced a MacBook Pro and I haven’t looked back.

I have both, the 12.9 and the mini... love the combination.. the 12.9 is almost always on the keyboard and for answering email etc at my desk.. in front of the tv on a table.. the mini is for reading stuff in bed mostly.
If the 12.9 is always docked on a keyboard wouldn’t a MacBook Air and mini make more sense?
