I understand that not everyone can afford a new iPhone each year but selling the old one unlocked and jb always makes up for more than enough of the early upgrade price.

That's exactly what I did. As soon as the 3GS came out, my wife and I upgraded while still in contract, and eBay made it financially feasible. Got $300 each for one year old 3G's, and bought the new 3GS at the early upgrade (but not subsidized) price of $100 off full retail.

Never looked back. The 3GS is SO much better. Speed counts more to me than a front facing camera or higher rez screen which people expected, but did not get, when the 3GS was announced.

yeah my jailbroken iphone 3GS was sooo much faster than stock OS on 3G

i think he is trying to say that jailbreaking a 3GS makes it slow which ofcourse is not true

Quite the opposite actually: the 3GS jailbreaks wonderfully and you can really push it with backgrounding and such. The 3G, however, already chokes on the latest Apple OS, and jailbreaking only makes the situation worse. Just not enough RAM for it to run smoothly...

The 3GS in terms of general operation is as "snappy" (sorry to use a Jobism) as the 3G was on firmware 2.2.1.

I don't buy into the x2 faster for everything, having tried the 3GS out. It's faster accessing websites over 3G, but again the 3 to 5 second difference on most pages isn't a big enough deal to me personally. That's just me.

Also, apps "launch" a split second quicker on the 3GS, but actually load far quicker on the 3GS ... again, when sitting on the train to and from work, those seconds whether it's 10 seconds or whatever, don't really bother me. The loading times are nothing when you're someone who used to wait 25 minutes on games loading on audio cassettes in the days of the ZX Spectrum. :p

I'm just happy to have an iPhone being honest.

This is true. My 3G is running great on 2.2.1 and it's very comparable to the iPhone 3GS. 3.0 slowed down the older iPhones for the sake of running on the iPhone 3GS.

I'm still happily on 2.2.1 and I will stay here until Apple makes the OS respond well again.

You probably got used to it. 3-5 seconds longer here, a few seconds there makes the whole user experience a drag no matter what feature your using.
Also the 3GS flys jailbroken and backgrounder runs nice without crashing down like on the 3G.

I'm considering a downgrade of my 2G to 2.2.1. I love a few of the features of 3.0+, but man... this phone is soooo sluggish at times. 3.0 runs silky smooth on my iPod Touch 2G, but that device has a slightly faster clock speed than the 2G/3G iPhone and doesn't have to always run phone.app and others in the backround.

The only 2 ways to do that, either by newer hardware or
by removing all added features from 2.0 to 3.0
and I can see you already did do that by going down to 2.2.1
Don't expect 4.0 to run any faster than 3.0 did on the 3G model. It will most likelly be worst like a turtle:)

That's not necessarily true.

Look at OS X Snow Leopard. My Father-in-Law now uses my 17" iMac Core Duo, and has done for a year now since I upgraded to a new iMac.

On Leopard it ran brilliantly, but on Snow Leopard the speed and responsiveness was incredibly noticeable, even on a system that is 4 years old this month (bought February 2006).

Streamlining the OS could very well happen. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

The 3GS will go the way of the 3G soon enough, technology moves so quickly nowadays.

Most people will be able to get the discount if they bought the 3GS in June. I bought mine in October, so they say October for me. That's really not a long time to wait.

Nice! I didn't even know that would be an option; I assumed I'd have to pay full retail in June. Just checked, however, and despite getting the 3GS subsidized in June, it says I'm eligible now for a discounted iPhone upgrade. Right on.

it's not quite the same but if you got hope more power to you.
We are talking about a phone not your father in laws computer....
More features added to the iPhone os the more system resources are used up and less responsive it becomes. It won't be as noticeable on the 3GS is my guess but in the 2G and 3G models forget it. That's if they'll still continue putting updates for them.

3GS>3G. It's a world of difference. Much better hardware on the 3GS than 3G. 3.x also seems more optimized for the 3GS than 3G too.

i bought my 3g the first day and got the 3gs the first day for 200. and ill be getting the 4th gen for 200 also the first day.

so to all that wait. HAHA

I prefer to wait (and waiting is the choice), since new phones always tend to have new issues. I'm also mature...that "gotta have it now" attitude left lonnnnggg ago.

what new issues? So because we want a new iphone when its released we are not "mature" ? Doesn't make sense.

I have enjoyed every iphone revision. and guess what when you sell your iphone it more than makes up for having to buy a new one..so your really not out any money . also my 3GS had NO issues what so ever since day one.

and to the spaz i know your just trolling. but come on .. 2.2.1 is in NO way comparable to 3GS ..but continue trolling for attention

When it upgraded to the 3gs it was from a launch iphone, it was like a quantum leap

Yeah, I'm just finding that out now, after being with the 3G up until a few weeks ago. It didn't bother me then, but I hadn't touched a 3GS until I recently purchased one. I guess ignorance IS bliss.

Since you've upgraded to a new iphone each year, did you have to add a new 2 year contract each time, or just pay the extra 200 bucks for the early upgrade?

yes i sign a new 2 year contract but when a 3gs is 400 with the early upgrade and you get 325$ for your 3G i ended up paying like 75$ for the 3GS .. so do the math i paid 75$ for a 3GS

That's a pretty good deal then, for the early upgrade. I'm upgrade eligible this year, so I'll have to sell my phone next year, to not have to pay the hefty early upgrade price.

I just switched to at&t from tmobile last year so, extending with at&t doesn't bother me much really.

i had 3g and switched with the person on my plan who wanted an iphone.. they tech. bought the 3gs and we just switched our phones, I am up for new phone just in time for what should be release..

Nope, I'm not trolling. This has been my experience. 2.2.1 is fast and responsive on my iPhone and it still makes it feel more like a 3GS. Scrolling, launching app animation, iPod app... it's all smooth as butter. I know you don't wanna accept that this is the case, but it is. My iPhone runs like a dog when I upgraded to 3.x.x, so I just leave it at 2.2.1 and it's great.

This is all based on my own personal experience, plus trial and error of upgrading and using 3.x.x. There's no denying that 3.0 was made for the 3GS and 2.0 was made for the 3G. 1.0 was made for the original iPhone, but since the original and the 3G were almost the same exact hardware, 2.0 ran the same on both.
