why you waited ages for an imac since the 10Gbe was never a thing for the recent imacs?!

Because 10GBe is available as standard on the iMac Pro, and as a BTO on the Mac Mini. Made sense to me that it would be available, at least as a BTO, for the new iMac. I don't think that was an unreasonable assumption.

Definitely no T2 chip. But yeah, I'm waiting for someone to test the CPU temps. FWIW, the i9's are using solder and might be cooler. The 3.7 i5 (9600K) is also soldered.

All 9th gen. i5, i7, and i9 cpus are soldered. Intel calls it sTIM.

Hello guys and girls may you can help me out.

Rigt now I have a 21" late 2013 256gb ssd 16gb i7. Still running smooth.

I have been waiting and saving for an iMac upgrade. Now the 2019 upgrade is finally is here im thinking about ordering the following:

27" i5 9. generation
8 Gb ram
580x
512 gb ssd.

Price in Denmark: 3060 usd at educationstore. Im a teacher.

Well, for me its a lot of money and the specs are probably overkill. But I want my purchase to last many years. 5-10 years.

And that's where my concern comes in. Im thinking; what if the redesign comes at the next update? Will I have buyers remorse? I know it's a difficult question to answer. But what would you do in my situation?

Im really debating what to do. I just love new tech and I have been waiting so long and my wife has given me the go ahead. My old iMac is running fine for my needs, but man I would love that 27" screen.
I can probably sell my current iMac for 680usd.
This just comes with the territory of always buying the current high specd 'puter. I am working on a 2012 top of the line 27 inch which has been a solid workhorse for me. The fusion drive really is hard to deal with sometimes though. As long as you get the SSD (and get the biggest you can afford), you should have no problems running that thing for ten+ years. I might go with the Vega though.

After much research, many hours spent reading posts on this forum and too much obsessive thinking, I ordered an iMac, for my film major daughter. Her main interest lies with editing, using Avid Media Composer in classes and at home. Hoping this was a good choice...
27”
i9
Vega 48
8g RAM (will self upgrade to 40g)
1TB SSD

If you don't mind me asking- is your daughter a professional video editor? I only ask because I passed my daughter my 2016 MBP 13-inch and she is super happy with it, performance wise. She uses FCPX mostly with 1080p videos.

I am looking to get the new 2019 iMac for myself for office and based on all the comments I've read, I'll go with the 27-inch, 9th gen Core i5 and the Vega with 512GB SSD and 8GB RAM. But I'm waiting to read the reviews before I order to mostly see what the thermals are on the 580X and the 9th gen processors.

No... she's not a professional editor but would like someday to be. Several people suggested that I should look at the MBP for her but I wanted to get her a full size computer, which will be similar to the ones they use in her editing classes. 15" MBPs are pretty pricey themselves. I actually looked closely at the other iMacs and even the 21.5", when RAM and upgraded processor/GPU are added in, the prices come pretty close to what I ended up getting. Might be more computer than she needs right now, but she may evolve pretty quickly into it. Good luck with your computer purchase.

That is one helluva machine Sir. She will be very happy.

Please o please, don´t go with anything less than 64GB ram. She will absolutely need the last 22GB up from 40GB when she is working with 4K footage, trust me. I am a video editor by profession.

Thanks! Will definitely keep that in mind. I started off looking at the 21.5” models and am in a bit of “sticker shock” as it is! Lol

I do 3d animation as a living, so you did very well. Your daughter will be very happy. Just be sure to purchase Apple Care - 99,99% you will not need it but better safe than sorry. This machine will serve her at least 4-5 years at a pro level, so although it's a big upfront investment it will pay off for itself. Wish you and your daughter the very best.

Thanks again! I did purchase Apple Care. I’ve yet to need it on any of my Apple products but the security always seems well worth the cost! I’m sure, after her shock of having that big screen on her desk, she’ll be ecstatic, as she’ll be able to practice on her own computer rather than needing to reserve so much time on her school’s machines. Also hopefully she’ll now get more organized with her folders, back-ups etc. I can already tell that I might end up being a tad overprotective about the iMac! Lol

The itch got me and the looming end of the interest free credit deal. Reading the thoughts of those on here it seems the thermal issue may not be too much of an issue.

I decided on all SSD too as I wanted the iMac to be a bit more future proof. As I said I’ve got nearly 7 years from my 2012 which is the longest I’ve ever got out of a computer by a long shot. I should still be able to sell the old one too for around £500 which is unbelievable. So the order is placed:

27”
i9
Vega 48
8Gb ram (upgrade myself later)
1TB SSD
Apple care.

Arriving 3-5 April I’m told. The waiting begins.

Is there not a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter for 10 gig? I don’t mind desktop dongles because they just plug in once and are out of sight.

Yes, I have an adapter at the moment for my MacBook - not a dongle mind - its the size of a portable drive!

As mentioned earlier, I went for the base 5k model with a 512 SSD, extended keyboard and Apple care

Delivery 1-3 April. Torture!

Really wanted to wait for the tear downs but also needed to get my order in before the end of the UK tax year!

Thinking of

i9 8 core
8gb Ram
Vega 48
512gb ssd

Matched with

Sonnet sel 3 tb3 pci-e
3 x 1tb 970evo ssd installed in tb3 enclosure

For external storage

Mainly for video editing to replace current mp2010 6 core.

Main concern is heat/noise of the system with an i9 and Vega in there when editing/encoding.

Would be very interested in hearing how you get on in terms of noise/heat with you spec.

Do you think 512 gb internal storage will be enough? How reliable are those Eva SSDs?

I want to order the exact same config + OWC 64 GB RAM... need it for music production.

Here is a crazy take for your comments
I have a late 2009 iMac (yes!)
I am concerned about the discussion on throttling and the heat issues
However, since I never hear the fan on my 2009 machine - am I worrying about nothing?
I want a new machine to run photoshop, lightroom and iMovie easily and smoothly
I want to upgrade to FCPX if I ever get brave

Given the above - if I buy the i9 with the Vega card - am I worrying about nothing?

thanks all
Mark

I'm curious if they updated the cooling. Cuz I bought the 2017 Core i7-7700K iMac and it was a vacuum cleaner at times, so I returned it and got the Core i5-7600 instead. Much happier.

For a comparison Handbrake encode, the i7-7700K took 10 minutes, but was in full vacuum cleaner mode for 9.5 minutes.
The i5-7600 took 12.5 minutes, but didn't become truly loud until about the 9 minute mark IIRC.

What this means is that even for short encodes the i7 would be loud after 30 seconds, but the i5-7600 is basically always silent for me for short encodes up to several minutes.

I won't be upgrading in 2019, but if I were to buy today, I would get:

27" iMac
8 GB RAM (upgraded myself to 24 GB)
Core i5-8500 3.0 GHz 6-core
1 TB SSD
Radeon Pro 570X 4 GB

It should be noted that the Core i5-8500 is about as fast as the i7-7700K, but at somewhat lower power. However, my i5-7600 is way, way lower power than both of those, so I'm good.

This will be my 1st Mac desktop. And I am a photographer. Ordering a 27" i9 processor with 8GB ram and the 46 Vega graphics with either 1 or 2 TB SSD because I keep my computers for long time and want future proof. It looks promising that the i9 and Vega 46 run cooler.
Have been waiting a long time for this one.

Pretty sure we are looking at 2020 for a redesign unfortunately, most likely due to intels roadmap than anything else.

As good as the 5K screen is, I feel its way behind the iPhone XS screen - and rumors said to expect big improvements in the screen performance. I guess 2020 will be a kickass iMac.

That said, I will still order the i9/vega iMac now - I need the speed and in many ways this outperforms the iMac Pro at a lower price. No brainer really.

I don’t really keep anything on the internal ssd.

Current cMP has 512gb boot and is not even 1/3 full. All my data on seperate disks.

Fcp x library
Fcp x export
Fcp x import
Media store
Transcode

Media store is where rip media too or store files to be editors
Fcp x import where transcode media to pro res ready for fcp x import
Fcp x library is library for fcp x
Fcp x export where export from fcp x too
Transcode where transcode media rios too or encode the fcp x export for iTunes too.

Arrange so that where sharing a disk then the source and dest are always different ssd’s.

The Samsung 970evo nvme drives seem to be plently reliable, with seemingly a lot of people using them in upgraded cMP and hackintosh. Seem to work with Mac OS without issues.

Just need to make sure that get the 970 evo and not the evo plus which does not go well with Mac OS.
