There are certainly those kinds of people, and there are certainly those that even with camera use still don't end up coming close to maxing things out.
Totally! I guess my point is that the industry standard for storage has moved far beyond Apple's current offerings. It's getting difficult for them to justify this.

Yeah, mainly it's just their approach to make as much out of it as they can for as long as they can. Took them too long to get out of 16 GB and then 32 GB, and seems like they aren't taking that much of a different approach with 64 GB. I mean at least it's 64 GB now, but they should have moved beyond that by now.

100%. Still picking a 12 up so I guess whatever they're doing is working ;)

Also, standard photo and video sizes have increased dramatically over the past 4 years, since the iPhone 7 (which has similar...same?) storage-sized phones. Look, I'm coming back into this iOS space new and refreshed after a number of years with Android. I'm excited and can't wait - will also be upgrading the Cloud storage for my wife and I to share. All positivity here - just pointing out that Apple has been notoriously cheap with storage options...forever.
I’ve got 12,000 images on my iPhone with Download and Keep Originals and my iCloud Photo Library uses less than 35GB. New photos have actually gotten smaller thanks to HEIF. 4K videos though, yep, those are big. Mind, I expect those who know they take a lot of photos and videos would know to either spring for bigger storage (probably even 256 and 512GB) or offload the content. Doesn’t seem like 128GB would be sufficient for that.

Yes, Apple’s stingy with storage. However, situation’s a lot better now compared to the last few years with 16GB base. Iirc, 16GB was base storage from iPhone 4 through 6S (2010-2015, 6 generations). If they had been as stingy as before, we’d still have 32GB base on the iPhone 12.

The 32GB was actually short lived for the iPhone. iPhone 4-6S: 16GB, 7: 32GB, 8-current: 64GB.

Mind, I really think 5s-6S should’ve had 32GB base to begin with.

Fair enough, thank you! Looks like I have to get back into iOS to explore more! Again, I'm not attacking Apple here - just pointing out that in my past experience and my wife's current experience, we were always deleted videos/photos etc. Going to look at iCloud as a storage option for the both of us. We have two young kids so photos and videos are very precious to us.

My daily driver iPhone 7+ brought a couple of months after launch:

I hear this a lot with users needing help at work. I ask them, how often they look at those photos. Know what they tell me? Never or rarely. People having quick, every day access to a camera makes taking pictures easy. So much so, people take pictures of stuff they don't need or care about. All those unnecessary pictures/videos add up.

I tell users when they're sitting down bored, waiting at a doctors office or something, go through and delete any photo or video you don't need because you really don't need them. Do you need 10 pictures of your child doing the same thing? No. Pick one.

Yeah, I routinely clean out my photos of crap I don't need.

What gets me is the sheer number of people who don't back up any of these images. I still get people I know begging me to help them get photos off of a broken device every now and then. One person I knew lost years of photos when their phone died - and no, they never backed them up, ever. Poof, all gone.

Earlier in my days I used to be very snap happy - now, I'll spend more time getting a photo I'll really like so I don't have to spend time later sifting through the tons of photos I took.

In enabled iCloud Photos, Optimize Storage and Photo Stream on all my devices to ensure the Photos get backed up immediately.

Is there a way to instantly back up photos to iCloud and have those photos also deleted from Camera Roll?
Yes, enable these:

Tsepz : This don't delete photos - only keep thumbnails - or photos in lower resolution.
iCloud is a sync service not backup...

I wouldn't say this is terrible based on the fact that most people don't even have iCloud Photo Library turned on, however I will say it's a half measure.

Download and Keep Originals - I do this on all my devices. An exact copy everywhere.

I DO USE iCloud Photo Library as a backup. I don't have my photos anywhere else. I do however, once every so often, backup my computer, which backs up my photos. I am ok with that.

Please remember, most users don't even use iCloud Photo Library. So if anything happens to their device, they are SOL. I also get tired of hearing the whining of how much it costs - a whopping 99 CENTS! Or even 2.99!!! OMG, it's your cherished memories! Get off it already. :p

Yep, I use Download and Keep Originals on my main devices as well.

I'm not too regular backing up the iPhone/iPad to PC/NAS. I pretty much only do it when I upgrade devices or before a major firmware update. Hence, both iPhone and iPad serve as local redundancy with iCloud Photos serving as my offsite backup.

iCloud Photo Library is enabled by default on new devices. Iirc, the initial update to iOS 9 also enables it by default and you had to manually disable. Only reason it would stop working is iCloud storage filling up.

I agree with you on price though. Pretty much everyone I know is well covered by the measly $0.99/50GB iCloud plan. That covers both device backups and photos. When folks practically live off their $500-1500 phone, don't have their own computer or don't bother backing up their phones to their PC, you'd think they'd at least be willing to spend a paltry $0.99/month or $12/year for iCloud backup and sync. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and all that.

What particular benefit would you imagine getting from 5G right now?

In its current implementation, it is most beneficial in locations where spectrum usage is overcommitted. This translates to heavily trafficked places like airport/public transit terminals, popular locations like Times Square in New York or theme parks, and densely packed venues like stadiums, concert halls, and sports arenas, all of which we are told to stay away from right now.

If there is any year to skip something like 5G, COVID-19 crippled 2020 would be the year.

In Athens, GA, when the UGA students are in town, most data speedtests are around 17-20 mb down and 7 -8 mb up. When the summer arrives and most of the students are gone, download speeds are around 122 mb down and 100 mb up.

So, it looks as though the carriers have not provisioned for a market such as this. I am hoping that actual 5G will help with that.

So how did that work out for ya? After the countless posts of bitching and moaning, you got a 12 Pro Max anyway.
I’m astonished he bought it considering how rubbish the iPhone 12 was apparently going to be according to him throughout September and October. Not to mention the iPhones were not going to be released until December ‘mark his words’. Glad it’s all worked out though lol.

He was always going to buy it. I said it ages ago. The iPhone 12 is that crap (according to him anyway) he’s got to buy it.
Don’t patronize him he’s helping us fund the r&d for the next gen. He can say whatever the **** as long as he doesn’t return it.
