While in the ABSOLUTE minority, I find I really do like Photos for cataloging. I add the keywords I need it it does the trick. Between Affinity, MacPhun, DXO, Pixelmator, and Photos native tools, I can get the job done.

Being able to easily move between Phone, ATV, and Computer, sharing albums, and such seems to matter more to me than what I got from Lightroom. Affinity and Pixelmatr were free with the associated applications, and all the rest cost less than LR perpetual.

For the hard stuff, I can go into a full blown affinity/pixelmator and then back into photos.

What will you do with Photos if one day its library package will no longer fit on the internal drive? Photos seems to be very short sighted in flexible storage management.

Well there are a few things:
1. Running out of hard drive space is often a sign of needing a new hard drive.
2. Sometimes, it means cleaning up some messes. Do I really need all those photos? Go clean up some of the crap.
3. Move all or part of photos to an external drive, much like I did with FCP X (process isn't a whole lot different http://www.imore.com/how-use-external-and-referenced-libraries-photos-os-x).
4. Invest into icloud drive
5. Invest into dropbox.

Yeah, I am SURE I can manage one of those.
[doublepost=1457294833][/doublepost]
sure you can...

I am not saying it is as powerful as Lightroom or C1P. I can do most of what I normally do there. If I need more power, I can open up a full editing app like Affinity or Pixelmator.

I opted to use Affinity as it is a one time purchase price, totally dedicated to MAC, has great support, and reacts quickly to concerns via an excellent support staff. They have laid out plans to update upgrades during the coming year, with one of the biggest requests, I think, for an organizer which is lacking today. It is not point and shoot, though, and takes time to really understand the program to garner full potential. But, I am happy with it.

ill be honest, aside from that dazzling video, Affinity has a more.... comfortable price. this is gonna be a support hobby (i build miniatures) so dropping another $200-250 is a bit daunting, when the difference could go for a macro lens

photoshop express can edit raw for free. you only miss a few features, like reduce noise and defog, and a couple stupid border effects. Its basic but can get the job done. i use it when i want to put higher quality images on social media but dont want to bother going camera, to cintiq companion (laptop), to ipad pro. i just go camera to ipad pro and post. i would not want to edit too much on a screen that is not color calibrated (like the ipad pro). also Filterstorm Neue does raw editing and metadata editing.
[doublepost=1457675083][/doublepost]oops my bad. you get all features with an adobe ID in photoshop express. even if you dont buy anything. unlocks everything.

Now that Aperture is effectively dead, I used Photos with plugins from Macphun. Not too shabby actually...
my experience also. I can see that Lightroom is more powerful, but I don't often need the extra as much as I need to not be hooked to a subscription.

Side note, Adobe charges an early termination fee, which I like even less. I get and accept why it is so on contract cel phones. Adobe isn't providing a $1000 piece of hardware 'free' with their subscription.

You can still buy LR 6 as a standalone app. Probably won't be able to for LR 7 though :(

I shoot with an iPhone 6S+ and a Sony RX1 full frame, and I have a MacBook plus iMac combo, shooting Raw on the Sony.
I too dislike subscriptions, and was looking for an alternative to Lightroom since Aperture is deadware.

My library is events-centric and my DAM usage is pretty much only importing into a new event (folder/album or whatever) and rapidly browse all pictures to find out the ones I want to edit.
My edits are common slider settings like exposure, white balance, highlights and shadows (levels in Aperture).

Ideally, I'd like to start importing on a hard drive with the MacBook and continue with the same hard drive on the iMac when I'm back home, but so far I found LR/Aperture/Photos pretty much tied to just one catalog stored on a single computer.

Does anyone have advice for a combination that would allow picture import/browsing and RAW editing that would be recognized by the same software on the other computer? (Maybe with sidecar files?)
RAW processor quality would be important since without it, it would not make sense for me to shoot RAW.

You can set up your Photos catalog to an external drive (much like you can with iTunes). I haven't tried a NAS, but a USB drive will work. You just need to always have that drive around when you start the specific computer. Also, there is the option to use iCloud, Dropbox, or similar if you like. Also, the way photos syncs between devices would give you something kind of similar anyway. The caveat being that syncing a bunch of RAW files will take some time, and you would have duplicate catalogs.

The USB drive catalog would work with LR/Aperture also. With Lightroom, simply point there. With Aperture and Photos, hold the option key while starting to create the new catalog on the USB drive.

hey there,
i was wondering which non-adobe app people are using to edit their raw pictures. I've been reading here and there, and came across an app called "Affinity", which seems nice but I'm afraid i was to dazzled by the promotional video to make any sound judgment :D

thanks in advance

Photos on OS X, and if I'm feeling creative combined with plugins from Macphun or Polarr.

Affinity is more in competition with Photoshop than it is with Lightroom, C1, or Aperture.

Affinity the application is designed to compete more with Photoshop than Lightroom or Aperture. It does include some nice extensions to Photos should you need them

The first question though is are you maxing out Photos? It has quite a bit under the hood. You just have to go looking for it.

Have you opened up all the adjustment options? Everything you see in the attached image below is NATIVE to photos. You go to adjustments, then click the blue "Add" and start checking off what you need. By the end, you will have a lot more than what shows up by default.

These settings are used in Aperture, Lightroom, C1Pro, and most other RAW editors. There may be some variation on how thew work, but they will be there.

THEN, if you still cannot get what you need out of Photos, it may be time to swipe your debit card. Why spend money you don't have to, though.

Then you could grab Affinity and that adds, among other things, a nice Haze removal. Look up how to add extensions to Photos after buying Affinity or Macphun. I bought Affinity to replace Photoshop and got a pleasant surprise with the extensions.

Hope this helps.

I am starting with Capture One that for us Sony user is just $50 for the Pro version which includes Sessions and does not tie everything to a catalog!

Tried C1P and didn't like it I went back to Aperture. Sorry fella.

I used Aperture since version 1.0 when it cost $500, and then, as it became clear that Apple was beginning to neglect it, ran Lightroom alongside Aperture for several years. I must have tried the Capture One Pro demo five times in that time — beginning with version 5 or 6 when it didn't even have a DAM — but didn't finally make the switch until this year. Now, after the initial learning curve, I'm happy with it. Some things it does better than Aperture or Lightroom, a few things worse, most things just as well, but differently. The DAM needs work, but it's a new feature, and they're improving it rapidly. My only trepidation is that I've become gun shy towards apps which swallow one's photos and lock them within a proprietary database. In the back of my mind I always remember what Admiral Ackbar said: "It's a trap!"

Verdict: Capture One Pro is a great app worth its high cost, and it's great to be free of Adobe's monopoly and Apple's indifference.

Do you also use Sessions instead of Catalog?

Tha app that comes with the camera is an option, but what if you use multiple cameras? Am I trusting Nikon to update CaptureNX to handle my New Canon and Sony stuff?

I take Photos. Also, it isn't too bad getting images out of that proprietary database.

I tried some of the free competition like Darktable, and did not care for them. I demoed C1Pro and a couple others. I didn't particularly care for them.

To me, this part of photography is not fun. It is maintenance. The stuff I do is to fix the failing in the shot either due limitations of the camera or because God failed to properly light the world to match my vision (& I can't fire God, he's too well connected so I just have to grin and bear it). Then there was that ONCE where I might have done something wrong.

Anyway, digital asset management and Corrections like these are like oil changes and tire rotations on the Porche that is photography. Yeah, that stuff has to be done, but that isn't the part I really enjoy. So I want it to be as out of the way and unobtrusive as possible.

For me, Photos gets out of the way. It syncs across multiple devices, multiple camera (including my iPhone) and generally does all right for me.

I WANT to like C1Pro more because it looks like it renders RAW images better. But, if I have to force myself to use a tool, it is getting back burnered l.
