Hi, searched everywhere for something to explain these logos. Seems to be telling me to switch something on, but what? I am a new Mac Pro user, so bear with me. After booting up my 2010 Mac Pro 5,1, at first, the typical Apple icon appears and loads but then takes me to this grey screen with black border flashing these two logos. Anyone know what they are telling me to do? I tried booting up on new Samsung 860 SSD boot drive. No other drives are present.

Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you need to pair with your mouse/KB. For installing macOS is better to use wired mouse/kb then pair your wireless ones after.

Ah, such a simple thing. Thanks so much. Look forward to being part of this community.

I guess the next thing is to format the new SSD, like one would do with an HDD? GUID partition mpa with MAC OS Extended (Journaled)?

Yep. If you're going to install High Sierra or Mojave, keep in mind that your SSD will be auto-converted to the new APFS format as part of the install process.

Think I made a mistake. After formatting the SSD successfully, I restored it from the Sierra OS installer from a flash drive. It renamed the SSD drive after the installer. Tried to format the drive again but failed due to not being able to unmount it. Should I try partitioning it?

You have to remove the CoreStorage container, something like:

Code:
diskutil coreStorage list
diskutil coreStorage deleteVolume 11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555

Is there a shortcut to open up terminal whilst in Disk Utility or do I need to reboot in terminal?

Thanks, see attachment.

Weird, did you restored your High Sierra installer on your SSD by accident?

Reboot from your pendrive with 10.13.6 installer than just do:
Code:
diskutil erasedisk jhfs+ Macintosh\ HD GPT disk0

Yes, I think that's exactly what I did.

Do you know how to create a installer pendrive with createinstallmedia?

Yes, I believe I have already done that, using Apple's website instructions.
[doublepost=1534200183][/doublepost]When i mistakenly restored the new SSD drive using the mac OS installer pendrive, it renamed the SSD drive with the installer name of the pen drive.

Just boot from your installer pendrive, check if your 500GB disk still disk0, erase it, quit Terminal and install as usual.

Code:
diskutil list
diskutil erasedisk jhfs+ Macintosh\ HD GPT disk0

Disk erase was a success! However, it seems that the installation is frozen on the attached display. "Shut Down" is not clickable and shutting down manually only brings it back to this alert.

You have to boot your macOS installation and upgrade the firmware opening the macOS High Sierra installer app. From there you can upgrade your firmware.

What's your GPU?

Ok, EFI supported, you can upgrade your firmware without problem with the 10.13.6 install app.

You have to do this first, then you can boot with your pendrive without problem. It's a Mac Pro 5,1 idiosyncrasy.

OK, so you're saying the firmware update is available in same said pendrive that has the Sierra installer?

No.

To update the firmware on a Mac Pro 5,1 you have to start it from macOS, not from the pendrive.

You need to boot from a drive with macOS, then run the 10.13.6 full installer from Mac App Store to do the firmware upgrade. You can't do that from the createinstallmedia pendrive and without the firmware upgrade, you can't install 10.13.6. Apple did a bad job on this.

Ah, OK. So if this new SSD drive is my only drive, I have to install a second drive with a working OS in order to update the firmware of the new SSD?
