Listening to 'Rubber Soul' by the Beatles.

Love that album. It is beautifully put together, and very under-rated.

To my ear, that is the album where the Beatles began to change direction musically and develop a much greater maturity, sophistication, subtlety and depth to their music (and - for that matter - in their lyrics as well).

In a way, it is a very under-rated album (as is Revolver, and for the same reason) but both albums herald and usher in the striking complexity of their later magisterial works.

While sipping a double espresso in a rather nice café this morning, the song - a surprising and welcome blast from the past - "California Dreamin'" (but not the Mamas and the Papas version) was playing.

You tend to forget just how gloriously and joyously and wonderfully optimistic much of the music from the 60s actually sounds.

And the woodwind in the middle of the sing really makes it something special.

And now, an elegant homage, or what might be described as a really smooth and accomplished tribute to cool and easy jazz, with Bryan Ferry - The Bryan Ferry Orchestra - with their lovely album "The Jazz Age".

wait.

what?

you've never heard this lp?

and you're english?

My tastes are exceedingly eclectic (there are over 10,000 tracks on my iPod classic and on my MBA's library):

This includes everything from medieval madrigals, through Baroque and classical, modern classical, easy listening, folk, jazz, traditional, Serbian and Albanian music, klezmer, Irish traditional, mariachi, south American, Turkish & Greek music, Italian songs, Portuguese fado, modern pop, 60s, 70s, 80s, some 90s music, some rock 'n' roll, jazz, easy jazz, fusion, funk, some blues, (no rap or hip hop or heavy metal), but yes, there are pieces of music that not only are not there, but that I have never even heard of.

Listening to Passenger's newest album. It came out yesterday, and I've listened to it 8 times. Absolutely one of my favorite albums is the year.

A piece of music (well, a CD that is now on my iPod) - a lovely CD - recommended and suggested by @mobilehaathi to mea few years ago. The wonderful "Rome" (by D. Luppi & R. Burton).

Terrific listening on a flight.

Oh, and, by the way, if you have any similar suggestions, I am - to put it mildly - all ears.
