Agreed - two stunning soundtracks and excellent movies. And - yes - both also played perpetually by your humble scribe, too.

Another work of his that can also be classed as "study music" - that I often played - was the soundtrack to the movie "1492."

Ah! Now that has always been one of my favourite tracks.

Then again, my love for Blade Runner is well known.

The way it ends the film: The Final Cut — sans narration — where the lift door slams shut on the two lone replicants… and then the End Titles.

My first exposure to Vangelis came through the Carl Sagan series Cosmos… Entends-tu les chiens aboyer?

Actually, spent years trying to find the soundtrack for Cosmos - and found it, eventually, in, of all places, some strange little CD shop - which stocked a wonderfully eclectic range of music - one of my young Lithuanian friends brought me there - in Vilnius in the early 1990s.

Loved the series Cosmos - it was brilliant - and was - and remain - spellbound by the astounding soundtrack.

That Cosmos soundtrack was one of the LPs that I wore out the grooves of (Ouch! Bad grammar…)
I recall that it did take a very long time to be released on CD.
Probably the compilation made licensing a nightmare.
So much good things on there though - Mystere de voix Bulgares… Shostakovich No. 11, etcetera.

It was my first exposure (1980!) to what came to be classified as "World Music"… followed a decade later by my other ear opener: Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ.

Sunday afternoon trip down memory lane.

Bits of - or, rather, to be more precise, several tracks from - Cosmos turned up on a number of the "Best of Vangelis" or "Greatest Hits of Vangelis" CDs that materialised around a decade or so after that again. (And yes, I have also bought some of these - after all, one can never have too much of a good thing.....)

Again, while the respective soundtracks of both Reservoir Dogs, and Pulp Fiction were fairly easy to lay hands on, I only came across the soundtrack for Jackie Brown (another case where I love both soundtrack and movie) in a grotty, grubby, sordid little store in Prague over a decade ago.

Well, @arkitect has put this in (my) mind after an exchange earlier this afternoon: So, Vangelis, it is, and several tracks - mostly from Cosmos (oh, yes, I loved that series - I remember pacing the living room with a repressed and savage excitement after each episode when it was on in the early 80s - I couldn't talk about it to anyone - and I adored the soundtrack).

Another brilliant - and haunting - track of his is "Fields of Coral". And the terrific "Intergalactic Radio Station" which - as it happens - is just now playing as I write.

Actually, this was more than "study music": On my flight(s) home, when I was working in central Asia, - on leave - sometimes, I would play hours of Vangelis in the plane (on my trusty iPod classic - 120GB - with my Bowers & Wilkins P5s, - they both accompanied me everywhere, stashed in my briefcase, and still do - a superb combination)......it worked, wonderfully.

Listening to Vangelis while passing over - or, crossing - the Caspian Sea (which takes thirty minutes to cross by air - astonishing) is an awesome and humbling and stunning experience.

If you check Youtube, you can find many different versions of this one, some are Allstar lineups, too.

Of the famous "Four Seasons" I have come to the realisation that I like "Winter" (the piece of music, although the season itself does little enough fro me). While I love the real season "Spring", the piece of music bearing that name has been over-played, and doesn't - as a consequence - appeal to me quite as much, for all that it is a cheerful, lively and up-lifting piece of music.

"Building" – Phillip Glass Ensemble

I've been meditating to this for a couple years because it's long enough to time myself with, lacks distracting lyrics, and is unpredictable enough to snap me out of inadvertent thought every so often.
