What no Daniel O'Donnell ??? The travesty ...

Sad, isn't it?

Put it down to my irredeemably middle class (smoked-salmon/champagne socialist) tastes....

Not even my dear and wonderful mum - aged 87 as of last week, and felled with Very Advanced Alzheimer's - but I will say that she loved Seán Ó'Riada in the 60s and adored Mise Éire - actually, her view was that this theme should have been Ireland's national anthem - more magisterial and less moronically worshipful of mindless, er....stuff ......could stomach the Dear Daniel.

We don't have a large fanbase for Irish singers here, except for a few well known bands such as The Cranberries, who I've seen live. Feel free to shoot me if you must. There was a weird American obsessions with Sinéad O'Connor for most of the 90s.

I have regular flashbacks to some of the hit 80s songs out of Europe. Who remembers Bano and Power, the Italian singing duo? Be thankful you don't.

Sounds like she's a wonderful woman. I'd been meaning to ask how she was. Happy late birthday to her. :)

I love seeing so much R.E.M. on here lately! I'll be adding some soon. Document, in particular, has been on heavier rotation in this house.

This morning, to calm some nerves:

In that same mode, while I'm long since worn out by the title track of Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, I plan to listen end-to-end. It came to mind when discovering this weekend that the long-out-of-print (or maybe never in-print) quad mix of that album is getting limited SACD release in Japan. Too pricy by half, but Amazon refunded my damaged order and let me keep that disc (Laura Nyro) gratis, so my audiophilia evens out.

Another classic.

"It's A Hard Life"

I don't want my freedom
There's no reason for living with a broken heart.

This is a tricky situation -
I've only got myself to blame
It's just a simple fact of life
It can happen to anyone -

You win - you lose
It's a chance you have to take with love
Oh yeah - I fell in love
But now you say it's over and I'm falling apart.

It's a hard life
To be true lovers together
To love and live forever in each others hearts -
It's a long hard fight
To learn to care for each other
To trust in one another right from the start
When you're in love -

I try and mend the broken pieces
I try to fight back the tears
They say it's just a state of mind
But it happens to everyone -

How it hurts - deep inside
When your love has cut you down to size
Life is tough - on your own
Now I'm waiting for something to fall from the skies
Waiting for love.

Yes it's a hard life
Two lovers together
To love and live forever in each others hearts
It's a long hard fight
To learn to care for each other
To trust in one another - right from the start
When you're in love -
Yes it's a hard life
In a world that's filled with sorrow
There are people searching for love in every way -

It's a long hard fight -
But I'll always live for tomorrow
I'll look back on myself and say I did it for love
Yes I did it for love - for love - oh I did it for love.

When I first heard this album, I was somewhat disappointed. However after repeat listens, it has grown on me. I consider it now to be one of their better albums. These two songs are the stand outs for me.
