The next piece of tech to purchase on my list is also a new CD player. Not quite yet, but during the next couple of months for sure.

I'm already getting heart palpitations because I would like to just go to a store, pick up a player, go home and enjoy the music. The way it will probably go, however, is a convoluted mess of indecision, research, head scratching, copious amounts of swearing, some more research, bourbon, and finally a purchase. Hopefully a good one.

Hahaha, I followed the exact same course as the bold :D

My two top contenders for high quality, players, i.e., outstanding DAC, solid transport, good internals (power supply, etc.) where the two I mentioned above, I'd highly suggest starting there if you're not looking to spend $500 (and these two perform as well, and even outperform several players costing 3X as much) - so that's the:

Onkyo C7030
TEAC CD-P650

Also, the "pro" brand of TEAC, Tascam, has the CD200 and a few variants

The Yamaha CD-S300, generally it's close to $300 (the others are 1/2 that), so now you're edging up close to the next level. Personally, if I was going to drop 300, I'd go ahead and spend a little more for this:

Marantz CD6005

$400-ish, not sure about new options, they may all be used or refurbs.

Well that's already some research I don't have to do, so thanks a bunch! I was very close to buying an Onkyo receiver a while back, but in the end went with one from Yamaha. Because of said receiver, I'd kind of like to get a CD player from Yamaha as well, but nothing's set in stone.

I'll be sure to take a gander at the ones you, very graciously, listed!

Nothing wrong with shopping for a good quality CD player; the research and delayed gratification of the eventual purchase is more than half the fun, to my way of thinking.

You have a point. It's just that the whole process perhaps seems a bit more daunting before it even begins, than it actually ends up being. I'm not much of a "shopper" anyway, so that adds to the whole "ordeal".

But at the same time I'm just smart enough to know to do my research when it comes to buying something as important as music equipment, so the hemming and hawing is a necessary evil, that can at times even be fun!

I give you: Millennial Japanese polka-ish, ska-ish riff on Grieg.

Didn't think I'd like it but I really did. Lead singer's talisman aka the pink pig is incredibly cool. The energy from their performance is like two extra cups of coffee.

I'm still playing mid-50s jazz today after enjoying the film Good Night and Good Luck again last night, the music in that movie's long prologue always draws me in.

What a great movie!

May spin your Japanese jazz above tonight. Need something to clear a thick brain fog.

I dedicate this song to all my friends who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Gone but not forgotten, I'll try to fix you. I'll keep fighting for those who are gone right by your side.

Coldplay - Fix You

This is as beautiful as the album cover.
Rounded it up just now from Apple Music. Thanks for posting!

This is why I keep hanging about here at MacRumours… I never know what delicious morsel of "new" I might stumble across. A book, a piece of music… a piece of someone's thoughtful mind.

Thanks for posting… Thanks to Spotify I see there is a back catalogue of 6 albums to explore. :)

Simthsonian Folkways has a really excellent catalogue to explore. So much music, so little time...

One of their best. And a wonderful sentiment. Friends who have lost people? That sounds like multiple people which is terrible.

5 this year alone. 4 in Texas. 1 in West Virginia. It's been rough with the opioid crisis and they are slowly cutting off other medications too.

It's been a rough year.

Not a what, but how :) Since I recently dove back into our CD collection and wound up having equipment issues, I just ordered (will be here Friday) a new CD player. I shopped the Onkyo C7030 which has (or had ... continue reading ...) an amazing Wolfson DAC, the other product that I was very closely cross shopping was the TEAC P650. Both are no-nonsense, single disc players, analog and digital out, both have a headphone amp'ed out (with discrete volume), the P650 has some neat tricks like CD ripping and a USB interface.

Well, apparently since Wolfson is gone, sold their assets to Cirrus Logic who no longer produce the DAC ship, they're apparently making them with a so-so AKM chip, and what you get is a crapshoot (you'd have to open it up, and that would likely be a refurb).

So, I decided the TEAC with the terrific Burr Brown DAC (PCM1791A), outstanding overall specs, some neat unique features, and with my planned powered monitors, this will be a nice compact music solution. I am very curious about the headphone output, clearly, it's not going to match a standalone amp, but wondering how it will on some 250ohm headphones (I have some 50 as a backup :D)

Got the TEAC P650 in, thoughts so far, after 5 days of listening: bright without being harsh, good soundstage, very nice build quality, looks terrific and slightly old-school :) The headphone out is shockingly good - I've been listening to it on Beyerdynamic DT880s in 250 ohm, and it's doing a terrific job.

I even scored some new music - mostly replacing lost/missing albums - via used CDs from SecondSpin, terrific experience, great prices (had a discount code too, < $4 per disc to my door), arrived in about 3 days. Some titles of note: Massive Attack ~ Mezzanine, Portishead ~ Dummy, Cocteau Twins ~ Heaven or Las Vegas.
